Jaguar News: Jaguar Announces 4- and 6-Cylinder Engines, AWD For XF and XJ

Last month, we reported on Jaguar's move to a turbocharged-four and supercharged V6 engines for the XF and XJ models. Today, Jaguar officially announced the new engines and a AWD option for the XF and XJ.

Starting off with the XF, the 2013 base model will have a 2.0L turbocharged-four from the Range Rover Evoque. The 2.0L is rated at 240 HP and 251 lb-ft of torque. Next up will be the 3.0L supercharged V6 which will take the place of the 5.0L naturally-aspirated V8 engine. The supercharged 3.0L is rated at 340 HP. The supercharged 5.0L V8 stays on.

Next is the XJ which also gets the 3.0L Supercharged V6 in the XJ and long-wheelbase XJL. The 5.0L NA V8 will stay on the long wheelbase XJL Portfolio model.

Both engines will come with a eight-speed automatic from ZF. AWD will also be an option on the XF and XJ, but only if you order the 3.0L Supercharged V6. Also available as an option is a stop-start system.

It is good for business to have more fuel efficient options and all wheel drive. It is a bit of a shame that the 5.0 V8 is gone, 340 hp is a bit weak, and it is a big jump in horsepower and MSRP to get to the supercharged V8. I will miss all Jags having a big V8 and rear drive.

Rear-drive is still unappreciated by the masses. Jaguar is making a turbocharged 4cyl? Brings back memories of the late unlamented Jaguar X-type.

Again waiting for the diesel...and methinks 4 cyl is the wave of the future....

Jaguar has a nice diesel V6 too, it makes around 265 hp and 440 lb-ft. I would be more fuel efficient than the 2.0 turbo also. I don't get the crazy push to put turbo 4's in everything from the Verano and Subarus, all the way up to Jags and BMWs, when a diesel will give better fuel economy and better acceleration.

      Mercedes-AMG says that it will be moving to an all all-wheel drive lineup in the near future and engine downsizing as Mercedes moves towards an all electrified lineup.
      Autocar spoke to AMG boss Tobia Moers who said "Customers have given us the answer, and most want four-wheel drive. Back in the days when we had an AMG E-Class as rear-wheel drive and with four-wheel drive as an option, over 90% chose four-wheel drive."
      Even the AMG's flagship, the AMG GT  will move to all-wheel drive in the near future.  The current E63 AMG has an all-wheel drive system that uses clutches to send 100% of torque to whichever axle needs it, including a drift mode that will completely disengages the front axle if requested by the driver.

      PSA Group is starting to sound a bit desperate for a merger these days.  First they bought GM's Opel Unit for $1.54b, later demanding a roughly 50% refund due to issues stemming from extra rosy sales forecasts and emissions regulations trouble. PSA has quickly turned around the Opel unit into a profit center instead of the loss-maker it was under GM control.
      More recently, Peugeot was seen to be dancing with FCA only to be rebuffed when it came to light that any merger between the two companies would come in the form of PSA stock. 
      Now PSA Group CEO Carlos Tavares says that he would be interested in a merger with Jaguar Land Rover, saying he would be interested in having a more premium brand above their current DS line. 
      Jaguar Land Rover is struggling with sales declines, but parent company Tata has said "There is no truth to the rumor that Tata Motors is looking to divest its stake in JLR". 
      So it is back to the dance floor for PSA without a partner.  Lets see who they come up with next.

      Second Best March Sales Month Ever for Jaguar Land Rover with 13,171 Units Sold from Last Year’s All-Time Record Jaguar Brand up 27 Percent for the Year All-time Sales Records for Discovery and Range Rover Velar (MAHWAH, NJ) – April 2, 2019 – Jaguar Land Rover today reported March 2019 U.S. sales: Land Rover had its second best ever March sales month with 9,492 units, a decrease of 13 percent from 10,972 in March 2018; Jaguar sales were 3,679 units, a 13 percent increase from 3,260 units in March 2018. Jaguar Land Rover total March U.S. sales reached 13,171 units, a 7 percent decrease from 14,232 units in March 2018. 
      “Jaguar Land Rover continues to achieve strong monthly sales due to its robust product offering in the market,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. “In addition to the continued success of the Jaguar F-PACE, we are also proud that Land Rover has achieved record-setting sales with the Discovery and award-winning Range Rover Velar.”
       
      U.S. MODEL HIGHLIGHTS
      Land Rover
      Land Rover had its second best ever March sales month with 9,492 units, a decrease of 13 percent from 10,972 in March 2018.
      Land Rover Discovery achieved an all-time sales record with 1,185 units sold, up 14 percent from its previous record of 1,039.
      The Range Rover Velar achieved an all-time sales record with 2,162 units, up 9 percent from its previous record of 1, 987 units.
      The Range Rover Sport continues to be the brand’s sales leader with 2,317 units sold.
      In the U.S., the 2019 Land Rover model line-up features six models; two within the Discovery family, and four within the Range Rover Family.
      The Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport – bring new levels of sophistication, desirability, capability and versatility to the Discovery family. With variable five- and seven-passenger seating options in both the compact Discovery Sport and full-size Discovery, this family of vehicles features the latest connectivity technologies, a variety of innovative storage solutions and the same on-/off-road capability Land Rover is best known for.
      The Range Rover Evoque delivers Range Rover luxury and refinement in a compact footprint. For 2019, Land Rover offers customers further

      Jaguar
      For the month of March, Jaguar sales were 3,679 units, a 13 percent increase from 3,260 units in March 2018. The award winning Jaguar F-PACE continued to lead the brand’s performance with 1,730 units sold, up 15 percent for the year.
      The Jaguar E-PACE achieved 563 units, up 126 percent from 249 units sold in March 2018.
      With the addition of the Jaguar E-PACE and the battery electric I-PACE, the New Generation of Jaguar lineup expands to seven models for the first time in the brand’s storied history, while new model derivatives like the Jaguar F-PACE SVR and the XF Sportbrake Prestige diversify the portfolio offering customers greater choice.
      For 2019 the Jaguar ‘PACE’ family of SUVs and crossovers has expanded since the debut of the F-PACE, the brand’s best-selling model. Last year, Jaguar introduced the E-PACE compact crossover, as well as the brand’s first-ever all-electric production car – the I-PACE, mid-size performance SUV.
