Mercedes-Benz has set forth an ambitious goal for its AMG arm: 30,000 vehicles sold by 2017, a 50% increase from the 20,000 vehicles sold annually. How are they planning to pull this off? By adding more models.

Ola Kallenius, head of AMG told Autocar that they plan to have thirty models on sale by 2017. The new A45 AMG shown at the Geneva Motor Show is the first model as part of this plan.

Maybe AMG versions of the Actros, Vito, and Viano are coming...anyway, sounds like brand dilution.

This will be a mess for them. We all know that small quantity items have higher costs and support will also be a nightmare.

MB will pay for this mess as the dilution of the AMG brand is going to happen. They need to learn from GM, Ford and Chrysler about not diluting a brand.

AMG is going to become a hag.

30,000 units out of their global total means 2.1% of Mercedes sold is an AMG. That isn't really diluting the brand too much. The 30 models will have to be counting body styles. S-class and E-class will have sedan, coupe, convertible, and the e-class has a wagon and the S-class has 2 AMG engines, so that is 10 right there. They make 17 AMG models already. I could see the CLA/A-class AMG cars selling 5-10,000 a year, that gets them to their goal.

An AMG Sprinter really would sprint. Interestingly enough, Sprinters have remarkable resale value.

Someone has added AMG badging to a black MB Sprinter around here, tinted windows, chrome wheels..looks interesting. As far as recent Sprinters go, I see more badged as MB than Frightliner.

I've seen AMG badges on a BMW. In fact, I've seen a notable quantity of obvious fake AMG mercedees around here- the 'brand' is already experiencing dilution.
