Earlier this week, we gave some details on what BMW has in the pipeline for the U.S. this year. One of those items was a new turbo-four diesel engine for the 3-Series. Today, BMW has announced the new diesel 3-Series will make its debut at the New York Auto Show this month.

Called the 328d, it uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that's rated at 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The run to 60 MPH takes about about 7.2 seconds. BMW estimates 328d "could well exceed 40 mpg," on the EPA Highway Mileage estimate.

BMW-Designed Team USA Bobsled to be Displayed

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - March 14, 2013… Following BMW’s pioneering philosophy of sustainable mobility, BMW will introduce the Concept Active Tourer for the first time in North America at the 2013 New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, March 27th at the BMW stand from 11:45 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan (655 W. 34th Street at 11th Avenue). The automaker will also feature two new additions to its award-winning 3 Series line-up, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo and the diesel-powered BMW 328d.

Offering a glimpse of further innovations in store for the premium compact segment, BMW introduces theConcept Active Tourer – a new plug-in hybrid concept which combines comfort and functionality with dynamics and style while showcasing several innovative solutions. Featuring an elongated wedge-shaped silhouette, athletic proportions and typical BMW lines, this concept car features a 3-cylinder gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor which allows for nearly 95 mpg. The Concept Active Tourer will also feature a “Cool Shade” composite glass roof which uses “Suspended Particle Device” technology allowing the driver to make the roof crystal clear or darken with the touch of a button.

BMW first redefined the Gran Turismo segment with the BMW 5 Series GT by adding first-class seating for four with space for luggage – and now introduces the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. Based on the iconic BMW 3 Series, a car that has appeared on “Car and Driver’s” 10 Best list for 22 consecutive years, the 3 Series GT features a longer wheelbase, more rear seat room and flexible luggage space with an optional panoramic moonroof. The 3 Series GT will arrive in the U.S. this summer and will be available with either an award-winning TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder or inline 6-cylinder engine.

The diesel-powered BMW 328d will make its U.S. debut at this year’s New York International Auto Show, joining the BMW 3 Series lineup and strengthening BMW’s position as one of the country’s most efficient automakers. The BMW 328d will be powered by a TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder engine, delivering 180 hp and an impressive 280 lb-ft of torque – propelling the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds while getting mileage that could well exceed 40 mpg (official US EPA estimates will be available closer to the launch of the 328d). With the hallmark performance of a BMW 3 Series and increased efficiency of a diesel engine, the BMW 328d will serve as the new benchmark in its class.

The slate of approved BMW Apps will expand to include new partnerships. Through these partnerships drivers will soon be able to listen to their favorite audiobooks read aloud, or share their location with friends and family. Music and radio fans will enjoy new functionality in their BMW via their mobile device.

BMW vehicle amenities will for the first time include a 4G LTE mobile hotspot accessory that connects with the car’s antenna to provide blazing-fast wireless Internet speeds inside the car for devices such as laptops, iPad and smartphones.

BMW will also announce that, beginning later this year, most 2014 models will feature BMW Assist eCallemergency call service for 10 years as standard equipment as well as TeleService, which tracks vehicle maintenance needs and automatically alerts the driver and local dealer. BMW Assist eCall includes enhanced automatic collision notification that not only places an automatic call in the case of a collision but also, through a ground-breaking algorithm co-developed with the William Lehman Injury Research Center, can send an assessment of the likelihood of severe injury in order to better prepare first responders.

Also featured on the BMW stand will be the BMW designed two-man bobsled developed in collaboration with the USA Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (USBSF). BMW of North America is the Official Mobility Partner of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and has applied its world-class design expertise – namely the application of BMW EfficientDynamics – to pair intelligent lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber, with optimized aerodynamics to design the new sled. BMW hopes to help Team USA win its first Olympic gold medal in two-man men’s bobsled since 1936.

GM should dump that terrible eAssist 4-cylinder with no torque in favor for a 2 liter diesel with 280, and my guess is the 328d will post huge fuel economy numbers. If the gas engine is 34 mpg, I bet this is more like 44 mpg.

Not sure why this is news, didn't they already roll out a diesel 3-series in the US w/ the last generation model?

Yeah, but it was the pointless 335d model with slower acceleration and worse fuel economy than the F30 328i.

Reuters Story - Hamburg Germany Diesel ban

Seems that Hamburg has taken it upon themselves to address cleaner air, reduced acid rain and better quality of life by banning ALL DIESEL Auto's that DO NOT meet the Euro 6 diesel certification from their streets. With the Euro courts having ruled that cities do have the rights to ban polluting dirty auto's, Hamburg went to work on creating new signage and for the last few days been putting up the new signage as the ban goes into effect Monday May 28th.
This has even bigger implications as Hamburg has asked the courts to rule in regards to allowing cities to ban all auto's that do not meet the Euro 6 standard from their streets. If the courts rule against the Euro 6 standard for ALL AUTO's, Hamburg is willing to drop back to Euro 5 standard from 2009 as the new default minimal emission standard.
Even with a new Diesels must meet Euro 6 and all other auto's must meet Euro 5 standard of emissions for being allowed on the streets around Hamburg, this could have huge implications for classic auto's and especially older commercial trucks that pollute much more.
From Paris to Mexico City to Athens, cities are watching this unfold in planning their own rules to remove polluting auto's from the roads around the planet.
Nitrogen Oxide is known to cause respiratory disease especially in untreated diesel auto's or those using cheat software that would negate a emission cleaning system. How does this affect the auto's in Hamburg Germany? Currently there are 330,000 registered diesel auto's and only 116,000 meet the Euro 6 standard. This means 214,000 auto's come Monday will no longer be able to be driven in Hamburg.
Police will do a random check and fine drivers $25 euro's ($30 US) and commercial trucks $75 Euros ($90 US) for violating the rules.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles finds itself in a fair amount of hot water over the use of defeat devices in the 3.0L EcoDiesel used in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee with various lawsuits. But that water could become hotter as newly unsealed documents reveal FCA's suppliers discussed the use of illegal software back in 2010.
Sergio Pasini, the controls and calibration director at supplier VM Motori wrote in an email that FCA wanted to use software in their diesel engine that could detect when a vehicle was undergoing emission tests and activate emission controls.
The software known as 't_engine' "is, no matter what Fiat says, a cycle detection," Pasini wrote in the email.
The lawsuit also alleges that another supplier, Robert Bosch GmbH, warned VM Motori about 't_engine' and that they could face “serious penalties” if it was discovered by regulators. Bosch it should be noted is under investigation for its involvement in the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal.
The documents are part of a proposed class-action lawsuit filed against FCA in San Fransisco which alleges the company misled buyers of the EcoDiesel by "touting the fuel economy and performance of its EcoDiesel engines while cheating on emissions tests to win regulatory approval."
“We continue to cooperate with various governmental investigations related to diesel emissions, and emails such as those referenced have been previously provided to the agencies. It is inappropriate to draw conclusions from isolated communications and internal deliberations, without the more detailed context that is part of the reviews FCA is conducting as part of the investigation process,” FCA wrote in an email statement.

Within the next few weeks, Volvo will unveil the all-new S60 sedan. It will be the first model in Volvo's lineup to not be offered with a diesel engine.
“Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines. We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars in a statement.
This news isn't that surprising when you back at comments made by Samuelsson in 2016.
Starting next year, Volvo will begin rolling out their electrification strategy that will see all-new Volvo models be equipped with either a mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or full-electric powertrains. By 2025, Volvo is expecting 50 percent of new cars to be fully electric.

Volvo Cars to eliminate diesel from the new S60 sedan
The new Volvo S60 sedan - to be launched later this spring - will be the first Volvo to be produced without a diesel engine, highlighting Volvo Cars’ commitment to a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine.
All new Volvo models launched from 2019 will be available as either a mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle. This is the most comprehensive electrification strategy in the car industry and Volvo Cars was the first traditional car maker to commit to all-out electrification in July 2017.
“Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment.”
Last month, Volvo Cars reinforced its electrification strategy, by stating that it aims for fully electric cars to make up 50 per cent of its global sales by 2025. The announcement was made at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show, positioning it as a powerful player in China, the world’s leading market for electrified cars.
The new S60, a premium mid-size sports sedan, is based on Volvo’s in-house developed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which also underpins the company’s award-winning new 90 Series and 60 Series cars. The S60’s estate sibling, the V60, was launched earlier this year in Stockholm.
The new S60 will initially be available with a range of four-cylinder Drive-E petrol engines as well as with two petrol plug-in hybrid versions. Mild hybrid versions will follow next year.
Production of the new S60 will start this fall at Volvo Cars’ brand new manufacturing facility outside Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston plant will be the only manufacturing  location for the new S60, meaning American-built S60s will be sold in the US market as well as overseas through exports.
