Industry News: Henrik Fisker Gives The Car Maker Business Another Go

Recommended Posts

Henrik Fisker has resurrected his namesake company. Speaking with Bloomberg, Fisker said his new company Fisker Inc. will reveal a "premium, all-electric vehicle in the second half of 2017."

Various about this new vehicle and the underlying electric technologies are currently under lock and key. But Bloomberg was able to glean some information about it. The battery technologies developed by Fisker Nanotech - their battery division - promises over 400 miles of range and feature industry-leading battery life that could "match the life of the vehicle."

“The technology emanates from several professors from UCLA who have been working on energy storage. We have already developed prototypes that you won’t see anywhere else,” said Jack Kavanaugh, chairman of Fisker Nanotech.

Fisker wouldn't say much about the design of the new model except that it would feature some of his own design elements.

“It will definitely be something that when you see it, it will look completely different. It will be sporty and spacious. And you’ve got to make something look beautiful—there is no excuse for making an ugly car, even with new technology—so it will definitely have some of my signature elements.”

The company also plans on launching an affordable model down the road.

I am excited by the new battery tech that gives 400 miles of range. This would be a real deal changer in how people see the EV auto.

Given Teslas shaky financial status, the Bolt and the Fisker are both huge.  I seriously am beginning to doubt we will even see an actual model three built by Tesla-he is hemorrhaging cash at a prodigious rate, and the merger with Solar city does not help matters either.

Thankfully, we have GM and Ford also.  They have both driven a model S, taken it apart, and driven it again.  They have the battery technology to start building an assortment of affordable electric cars any time they want, which should be in the next ten years with multiple models from both of them.

Fisker is beginning to drop information on their new vehicle called EMotion along with some clear images of the model.
The design is.. well... out there. The side profile looks be a Karma that has been squished. There are tall wheel wells and deep cuts in the doors. The front end is something - we're going with the policy if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything. The vehicle is built out of aluminum and carbon fiber.
Fisker is already making some claims about the EMotion such as the vehicle having "superb rear legroom."
"Fisker has taken advantage of the newly developed electric powertrain layout by pushing the vehicle’s entire interior compartment forward and increasing the wheelbase with distinctively short front and rear overhangs, a layout that increases the interior space," the company said in a statement.
Also, the EMotion will have a range of 400 miles and reach a top speed of 161 mph. The company says this range is due to graphene battery technology developed by Fisker Nanotech and Nanotech Energy Inc. Details about this new battery tech are slim. One more thing, the EMotion will feature autonomous driving technologies.
Fisker will fully unveil the EMotion in mid-2017.

Back in February, we reported on the rumors that Fisker Automotive was planning to change its name to Elux. This past week, Fisker has officially changed its name and it isn't Elux. Meet Karma Automotive.

The company says this name has always been a part of the brand - see Karma plug-in hybrid sedan.

"Karma is based on the principle of cause and effect, where your actions create your future. This awareness of what we are doing and why we are doing it—which we characterize as acting with intention—is what we stand for, it's authentic," said James Taylor, Karma's Chief Marketing Officer.

Rumor has it that production of the Karma sedan will restart sometime next year. We expect a name change along with the production restart.

Fisker Automotive Reveals New Name And Logo
Karma Automotive - honors iconic design and communicates future direction

COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Fisker Automotive and Technology Group announced a name change today to Karma Automotive. The company also launched its new website, including a video that reveals its new logo at karmaautomotive.com.

"With new ownership, a new management team, and a new production site, all here in California, it was time to communicate change," said James Taylor, Karma's Chief Marketing Officer.

"Karma" was chosen because it is relevant to both the old and new brands, while providing an aspirational message which embodies the company's purpose.

"Karma is based on the principle of cause and effect, where your actions create your future. This awareness of what we are doing and why we are doing it—which we characterize as acting with intention—is what we stand for, it's authentic," added Taylor.

Karma's new executive team has attracted top-tier talent from the automotive and technology industries to bring world-class expertise to its headquarters and new assembly facility in Southern California.

Karma Automotive's owner, Wanxiang Group, one of the world's largest automotive component conglomerates, is committed to the alternative energy space, having acquired solar, wind and energy companies. The group provides strong financial backing necessary to build a sustainable, world-class luxury automotive brand.

Since being bought by Chinese auto parts supplier, Wanxiang Group, Fisker Automotive has been quietly ramping back up with a new headquarters in Costa Mesa, CA, and an upcoming factory in Moreno Valley, CA. But one item that has been up in the air is when production of the Karma would restart. Speaking with The Oakland County Register, Fisker's chief marketing officer Jim Taylor said the automaker will relaunch sometime in the middle of 2016.

“We want to be out next year. Midyear is our target. That’s what we’ve told the plants and our suppliers, but we won’t make any promises to say this is our launch date, get ready,” said Taylor.

There is still a number of items and issues that Fisker has to work on before having vehicles rolling down the production line. At the moment, Fisker is busy hiring people for their headquarters and production facility. Complicating matters are number of delays and no real information as to changes for the model.

California's affinity for technology, style and perceived environmental consciousness appears to have earned it some Karma.

China's Wanxiang Group has announced plans to build the Fisker Karma luxury sports sedan in Moreno Valley. The 555,670 square foot Greater Los Angeles Area manufacturing facility is slated to create 150 jobs.

“California's natural beauty, trend setting, technology, and environmental focus are perfectly aligned with our Karma re-launch,” said Fisker's chief marketing officer, James Taylor, adding that the company "believes in the quality, work ethic and competitiveness of manufacturing in the United States.”

The plug-in hybrid Karma won accolades for styling, but financial difficulties caused the company to file for bankruptcy in November 2013, only to be purchased by Wanxiang in February 2014. The Hangzhou-based automotive parts giant also acquired battery manufacturer A123Systems in late 2012.

Fisker's move comes on the heels of another Asian automaker's decision to build vehicles Stateside. Geely-owned Volvo has just announced a $500 million manufacturing facility in South Carolina, and several states are vying for Land Rover's business, a brand which has been owned by Tata Motors since 2008.

Last week, Volvo announced that will be building a factory in South Carolina that will go online in 2018 and build 100,000 vehicles per year. Quite ambitious considering the brand only sold 56,366 vehicles in the U.S. last year. But the plant is part of a new comeback plan for Volvo.

"We have reinvented ourselves and we believe it now makes sense to go on the attack again in the United States," said Lex Kerssemakers, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America.

Now you might be scratching your head, wondering how a plant that will build more cars than Volvo actually sells at the moment will help the automaker. Well there is precedent with this decision. Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz built plants in anticipation of future growth almost two decades ago and it has worked like a charm.

But for this happen, Volvo also needs some new products and tech to pull this off. Well the company is rolling out its brand new XC90 crossover and their Drive-E engine lineup.

"All the planets are aligning for Volvo right now. They have wanted a bigger U.S. manufacturing presence for a long time. Now they have the investment and the future product lineup, and the U.S. market is expanding to support it," said Michael Robinet, managing director of IHS Automotive.
