Alfa Romeo Drops Manual Option for Giulia Quadrifoglio :Comments

It seems whenever we write a news story about Alfa Romeo, it usually is for bad news. This is no different.

Road & Track has learned from various journalists who attended the U.S. launch of the Giulia that there were no manual vehicles available. An odd omission since the U.S. was the only market going to get a manual transmission for Giulia Quadrifoglio and this transmission was available for those attending the European launch. Road & Track reached out to a Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' spokesperson to ask what is going on. The answer is that Alfa Romeo has decided against offering the manual for the U.S. market.

The spokesperson explained the decision came down to the U.S.' general lack of interest for manual transmission vehicles. A bit of odd turn of events considering that all of major U.S. auto shows that Alfa Romeo has appeared at featured Giulias equipped with a manual transmission. It should be noted that two key competitors of the Giulia Quadrifoglo - BMW M3 and Cadillac ATS-V do offer a manual transmission.

Given how few manuals are being sold, this is actually a sane business decision. Everyone from Acura to Ferrari seems to be dropping them.

Last time i was at a major Chevrolet dealership they had one manual Corvette on the lot and everything else was automatic.

Business sense makes sense, today's DCT's are superior to a manual. No need for the manual any longer. I am actually suprised they would invest even for the Euro market since the updated emissions, yes blame VW is making the traditional Manual a history note.

Lame. Wouldn't have bought one in the first place.

Given their sales figures, one could fit all of the future owners of these in North America in a high school football locker room.

...and it wouldn't even have to be a large locker room at that....

i love sticks but if i ever get another one, it will be because its a second or third play car

strangely though, i think they could have had a niche here.

They sell in such micro numbers this niche would be about these of a bridge game.

No one buys manuals, I agree with what everyone else has said.  What Alfa needs is to actually get this car on sale, they have been talking about it for 3-4 years like it is going on sale next month.

Fiat Alpha needs any buyer they can get LOL

They have Jeep and Ram doing well, Fiat is in the toilet and other than two retro muscle cars the whole group is not really selling passenger cars in the USA.

Nor will they probably be doing so in any volume in the future.

Method of Determining FCA US LLC’s Monthly Sales. FCA US’s reported vehicle sales represent unit sales of vehicles to retail customers, deliveries of vehicles to fleet customers and to others such as FCA US’s employees and retirees as well as vehicles used for marketing. Most of these reported sales reflect retail sales made by dealers out of their own inventory of vehicles previously purchased by them from FCA US.  Reported vehicle units sales do not correspond to FCA US’s reported revenues, which are based on FCA US’s sale and delivery of vehicles, and typically recognized upon shipment to the dealer or end customer. As announced on July 26, 2016, FCA US has modified its methodology for monthly sales reporting as follows:
Sales to retail customers by dealers in the U.S. are derived from the New Vehicle Delivery Report (“NVDR”) system and are determined as the sum of (A) all sales recorded by dealers during the month net of all unwound transactions recorded to the end of that month (whether the original sale was recorded in the current month or any prior month); plus (B) all sales of vehicles during that month attributable to past unwinds that had previously been reversed in determining monthly sales (in the current or prior months). Fleet sales are recorded upon the shipment of the vehicle by FCA US to the customer or end user. Other retail sales are recorded either (A) when the sale is recorded in the NVDR system (for sales by dealers in Puerto Rico and limited sales made through distributors that submit NVDRs in the same manner as for sales by U.S. dealers) or (B) upon receipt of a similar delivery notification (for vehicles for which NVDRs are not entered such as vehicles for FCA employees).

There was talk a few years back about Volkswagen possibly sending over the next-generation Polo over to the U.S. But it seems those plans have been scrapped.
Speaking with Automotive News at the launch of the sixth-generation Polo, Volkswagen global sales boss, Juergen Stackmann said it doesn't make sense for the automaker to bring it over.
"It doesn't make too much sense for us to bring a car like this, which has the substance of a class higher, into a segment that is so price driven in America," said Stackmann.
Subcompacts are sold in North America mostly on price and high fuel economy figures. In Europe, it is a different story. While price is one key factor for buyers of subcompacts, they are also looking for something that is easy to maneuver in cities and doesn't hurt the wallet when it comes to registering. Buyers in Europe also tend to buy features you would find in bigger vehicles such as adaptive cruise control.
If Volkswagen was to bring the Polo over, it would cost significantly more than its key rivals.
For the timebeing, Volkswagen will focus on two segments in the U.S. - SUVs and sedans.
"Our strategy for the U.S. will be SUV driven with the Atlas and Tiguan and there are two more coming. And we will also have sedans. That means we will compete in the segments that really make volume and business sense in the U.S."
