Other manufacturers have governed top speeds as well, just not across the board. Part of the reason the autobahn is so safe is that it is harder to get a driver's license in Germany than it is in the US. There is a lot more training involved and much much much better adherence to the rules of the road, even on the autobahn. You simply don't get people hanging out in the left lane going well under the speed limit because they know they'll get clobbered. We would need national strict enforcement of the passing lanes in this country to make any autobahn work here. The whole driving population would need to be retrained in how to drive.4 points

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the EQV Concept at the Geneva International Auto Show today. The concept features a 100 kWh battery that enables the van to travel up to 249 miles (400 km) on a single charge. Rapid charging functionality enables 62 miles of range in just 15 minutes. The concept utilizes a front drivetrain with 201 hp electric motor. The motor, transmission, cooling system and power electronics come together in a compact integral unit. The battery is placed under the load floor and takes up no room in the passenger compartment. While this is a concept, Mercedes says that a production version of this van will come to market. No word yet on when that will be, though the word "soon" was used. On the one hand, I'm glad to see a truly new sedan hitting the market. Especially one as great looking as this. And I think it will offer a pretty strong value quotient, as well. On the other hand, I feel compelled to point out that this should have been on sale a year ago. Especially considering VW's habit of completely botching the roll out of new models to dealers. With the inevitable low build numbers, port issues, transportation hang ups, and mismanagement of allocations that are the VW norm, it will be the end of summer before there is any inventory and people can drive them and reasonably get cars spec'd to their liking. By that point, the novelty will have worn off. Couple that to the fact that VW will be stingy on incentives and it will lease like crap, and it is not a recipe for sales success. Also, I've driven it, and people wanting a though and through sport sedan aren't going to be captivated by it. Not trying to be cynical, but I foresee this car suffering the same fate as the CC. It will be fresh for a short while- which VW will squander- then the enthusiasm will fade and along with it, the interest and sales. I hope they prove me wrong, but my guess is this car is going to be DOA.3 points

People bought last year FIVE times more CX-5s than Mazda 6. Companies just adjust to the market3 points

In before our resident Renegade driver and EV hater stops by to tell us all how much these must suck. And actually, if this PHEV works on the Compass, it should work on the Cherokee too. Maybe another mid-cycle update is in the works.3 points

People buy Volvos for safety and comfort... not to be able to go 113mph. This wouldn't weigh in on my decision to buy one or not at all.3 points

Seeing as this is a political topic regarding the car industry, there needs to be at least some political talk in this topic.. however, I ask that we keep it on Brexit and the auto industry and not wander into other political territories.2 points

None of which will matter when all the multi-nationals pull out and take the jobs with them. The banks are pulling up anchor and heading to Paris, or Brussels, or Berlin as well. One of the UK's biggest exports was financial services. That'll will go the way of their auto industry soon enough.2 points

I suspect Amazon, FedEX, UPS, etc will love these for city delivery purposes, especially in California, or European cities that frown upon gas burners in their urban areas.2 points

OUCH, Yup I think the morons who wanted to leave the European union will be rethinking this as people lose jobs and costs go up as they import more. Not good.2 points

It seems the horsepower/top speed/0-60 race keeps getting one-upped with each new hypercar...where is it going...5000hp, 350mph top speed, -1 sec 0-60? Ferrari styling hasn't appealed to me in ages...I still love the looks of 80s super cars...Testarossa, F40, Countach, 959...2 points
-
All these hyper and super cars from Geneva Auto show that are in multi millions don't even excite me anymore. Yes, they are hyper, super cars that can do incredible things at the incredible prices and will be bought by a few hyper rich that will never drive them in anger. Most people will not see them even on the street. At least cars like Corvettes and Porsches while expensive are not that expensive that most people will not be able to buy them, maybe as a second or third owner. But these Hyper cars will never be accessible to pretty much anyone.2 points

@Drew Dowdell @ccap41 Now not a Fact, but according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autobahn you have 3 speeds, far right is max of 130kph, middle lane is up to 150 kph and far left lane is for auto's 170kph and above. I am thinking the 180 kph is to allow all driving on the autobahn but keep a lid on the top end speed to keep the auto safe? ?♂️ I do question the speed limits as auto's have gotten so safe and according to wiki again the crash and death rates on the autobahn are some of the lowest anywhere. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_in_Germany2 points

Usually if I use a mechanic I bring my own parts because usually I buy either OEM parts or high quality aftermarket parts. Most small shops use cheap aftermarket parts because most people just want problem to get fixed as cheaply as possibly. You can ask your mechanic what parts he will be using for the fix, if it is a good quality parts than might as well get them through the mechanic, otherwise you better buying them online.2 points

According to a June 2017 number, there are 16,812 dealerships (of all makes) in the U.S.. Take a guess at how many dealerships of just GM had at the peak.2 points

I could see a speed limiter being an issue on a Porsche, but on a Volvo? Has anyone every actually gone over a speed limit in a Volvo? Speeding really isn’t in the Volvo image.2 points

OK.... so getting a flickering budgetary green light over here at Rancho Balthy, so I headed up the road & was soon sitting in an all black '19 Silverado 1500 LT. And I got a shiny brochure I can lay on the floor on my belly, kick my feet around & read. The Good :: • that rear seat 'storage' bulkhead is only attached to the floor with a couple screws & will pop right out. Hopefully there's no sensors for the rear belts, as I would yank the rear seat ASAP. • The rear of the crew cab is huge- must be about 6" deeper than my '04. • Most configurations don't have the stupid, space-wasting console / console shifter, thank god. • Interior is NOT filled with as much soft-touchy-feely materials that have decidedly less durability as I was afraid of. I hate it when car people try & dictate what truck people should have/want. • Front seat room & comfort is pretty good, IMO. • I had no issues with exterior visison/site lines (tho the rearview is kinda small), but will be better able to tell on a test drive. • Dealer can install larger rims; I was wondering of the different diameter tires would be a computer issue. Guess they can reflash. The Questionable :: • Bed is deeper than mine & other generations, to the point I would look at the costs to LOWER the truck a few inches. • The 2nd upper glove box is basically useless because the vertical box's rear 'wall' is the door- I don't have any idea what you'd put in there that wouldn't tumble out. Your only going to use about 20% of it's volume. Should have open down like a drawbridge. • There's no lower dash cubbies or ashtray. I don't smoke, but I like cubbies. • I'd love to see Chevy / GMC incorporate a MUCH larger slider rear window. I have to tip my hat- the tundra models where the entire rear window goes down flush is a fantastic idea (maybe the tundra's ONLY good idea, ever). In this limited exposure, it looks pretty good. Will stop in the GMC dealer soon and see how fingerprinty I can get a few Sierras2 points

Sad part is that you can rarely get a RWD sports sedan (from anyone, even KIA) for less than $40K these days brand new. As for the Arteon, it should have come to our shores TWO years ago.1 point

Kia fully unveiled their all-electric concept car at the Geneva International Auto Show today. Kia's design team exploited the flexibility of an electric chassis architecture to maximize cabin space to create a spacious interior. They drew together elements of a muscular SUV, a sleek sedan, and a spacious crossover into a single vehicle that purposely does not fit into any one classification. The concept pokes a bit of fun at the industry's current obsession with screens by creating gauge cluster made of 21 individual high-resolution screen curved over the dashboard. The Imagine by Kia is not destined for production, however, design elements from the vehicle show the direction Kia may take on its future cars and SUVs. View full article1 point

I do it for my Toronado all the time because parts are hard to source. I did it for the Honda on occasion and I would just say "I bought this and tried to put it in, but can't get to it... can you do it?" It helps that I have a regular mechanic who I've spent many kilo-dollars with over the years.1 point

I'll just add something auto related and entertaining anyway. Also, that was instantly, no waiting necessary!1 point

Yeah, 31 miles means that it must have a decent sized battery in there. That's better than the MB and BMW PHEVs can do for now.... though MB EQ should fix that somewhat.1 point

EXACTLY what they are going for. 112mph still seems pretty high but there must be a study out there saying crashes above 112mph tend to be much worse than 100mph. ?♂️1 point

Higher speed crashes tend to have more fatalities than lower speed crashes, regardless of the maker of the car. And in other news, boiling water can burn one's hands.1 point

I see no problem with speed limiting...outside of the autobahn and race tracks, there aren't any real world use cases where one would or need to go much past 85..1 point

Nice... a place in NY I'd like to visit again is Letchworth State Park and the Gennessee River in Wyoming County, NY (pic below).. I visited there 20 years ago when I was at a wedding in the Buffalo area. I was up in Western NY last year to Dunkirk, saw the lighthouse and some beaches...a short drive from Cleveland. Want to go to Chautauqua Lake and Niagara Falls this summer.1 point
