  1. Mercury is the Grand Marquis division, and I don't think it could ever have been made into a youth oriented brand.
  2. Basic brands moving upscale may have its roots in the 1965 LTD and Caprice, maybe even earlier with the first Impalas and Galaxie 500's of the late 1950's.
  3. Why on earth would anyone expect Mercury to get Euro products? Ford is going to sell the same Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo/Fusion in Europe and in North America.
  4. Just brighten your day by watching all the videos on these You Tube channels: http://www.youtube.com/user/bestofshowautomotive http://www.youtube.com/user/carsbyjeff http://www.youtube.com/user/Flemingsclassics http://www.youtube.com/user/Vanguardmotorsales http://www.youtube.com/user/StreetsideClassics http://www.youtube.com/user/southernmotors
  5. Because of periodontal disease, I am facing implant surgery myself to replace 8 front teeth in July, and I am only 46. Insurance will only pay about $3,000, so I will have to pay about $15,000 out of my own pocket.
  6. Unless Cadillac keeps the XTS pricing to the level of the ES pricing, the XTS will sell no better than the MKS and RL, probably about 20,000 per year. The interior is nice, and the XTS looks like a Cadillac - unlike the MKS which doesn't look like a Lincoln - but the proportions are odd. Despite all the praise, the Audi A6 and A8 are very poor sellers in this country, as are the RL and MKS. FWD based luxury sedans even with AWD just don't sell anymore.
  7. Old news. I am no insider and have known this for months.
  8. There is no news here. Anyone paying any attention has known that the new Impala and the XTS would be built in Oshawa for months.
  9. I like the over the top 1958 to 1960 Mercurys, also the 1975 to 1978 Grand Marquis, and 1970/1971 Montego. My first car was a 1966 Comet Capri coupe with a 289 2 bbl.
  10. I would like to see the wagon version sold here also.
  11. Happy Birthday Uncle Dave (your old name).
  12. I don't believe a word of this rumor. Cadillac's lineup 3 years from now will be the CTS, Epsilon II XTS, SRX, probably a Lambda Escalade, and hopefully an Alpha (but I wouldn't be surprised if that is 5 or 6 years away). After last week's Caprice debacle, I'm not believing any of this - even if Bob Lutz announces it.
  13. I love the big Pontiacs of the early 1970's http://www.oldride.com/classic_cars/676585.html
  14. The 2004 Malibu would have been the same car as the 2008 version with Buick and Pontiac versions. No more W bodies after the 2000 Impala. No more G bodies after the 2000 DTS, LeSabre, Bonneville and 2001 Aurora. One RWD platform instead of both Sigma and Zeta and would have been used for CTS in 2003 and W and G body replacements from 2003 through 2006. J bodies would have been replaced by 2000. A steel bodied car based upon the Saturn S series would have been better than keeping the antiquated J bodies through 2004. 3.5L Shortstar V6 would have had VVT and 250 hp and replaced the 3800 in all premium applications by 2000. I would not have spent money on the 4200 DOHC I6 and just used the 4.3L V6 and various V8's in the Trailblazer/Envoy. The 4.3L V6 would have received the same improvements the V8's received over the years.
  15. Miami is the right city for me, but Los Angeles is the city most like me. This makes sense to me - South Beach is my favorite place on earth, and I loved the Los Angeles area when I went there in 2006.
  16. I have a thing for school buses. I miss the days of Ford, GMC, Chevrolet, and International chassis mixed with Thomas, Ward, Blue Bird, Superior, Carpenter, and Wayne bodies. Such a variety is no longer available. All there is now is Thomas/Freightliner, Ward/International, and Blue Bird with its own chassis.
  17. I liked the 1973 Laguna, which was available as a sedan, coupe, and wagon.
  18. The 1986 Taurus and Accord and 1987 Camry led to the death of Oldsmobile. GM let its mid size cars get stale by the mid 1980's. Also, large car buyers shifted to SUV's, hurting the 88 and 98. Charts of car sales show that Oldsmobile hit its peak in 1984 and the decline started in 1985, from which Oldsmobile never recovered.
  19. They were good cars that should have been the 1991 Cavalier.
  20. Instead of wasting time on this petition, spend time at this You Tube site - http://www.youtube.com/user/AutomobileHistoryUSA - enjoying Pontiac's heyday. The way things are going, Chevrolet may be all that is left of GM.
  21. Mercedes is not doing just fine. Please scroll down to the last half of this article - http://www.christonium.com/automotive/ItemID=12358563534419 Even BMW is worried - http://www.leftlanenews.com/ceo-says-bmw-i...e-concerns.html
  22. I agree with you. Sigma is probably as big a money loser for Cadillac as DEW98 was for Lincoln. Besides the European emission control rules may outlaw many of the European premium sedans.
  23. The way things are going, GM may be much smaller by 2012 than shown above. I don't think it is realistic to expect HCCI will be ready or even widely available by 2012 or that manual transmissions should be dropped.
