  4. Smk if your there have you any input wondering if you've driven a Mercedes 4 on the tree?
  5. Can GM build a really good 3 cylinder engine though? That is the question. Once upon a time, their 4cyl engines were awful in the USA. Since the Ecotec family came out of Russellheim, they are much better. Can they build a very good 3cyl? I don't know. The development was throughout GM not just Opel but then again Opel is GM. Ecotec stands for 'Emissions Control Optimisation TEChnology Per Wiki "Ecotec The Ecotec name was adopted in 2000 for the new generation of Family II engines. The name was already used for the Opel GM Family II engine, Family 1 and Family 0 ranges. GM intends this new Ecotec to become its global 4-cylinder, and it has already fully replaced their OHV I4 line. The Ecotec Family II is a DOHC 4-valve design with an aluminum block and head (L850 for 86 mm bore applications, and L880 for 88 mm bore), designed for displacements from 1.8 to 2.4 L. It was developed by an international team of engineers and technicians from Opel's International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, GM Powertrain in Pontiac, Michigan, and Saab in Trollhättan, Sweden. Much of the development work on this project was carried out by Lotus Engineering, Hethel, United Kingdom. The engine uses aluminum pistons and cast iron cylinder liners. Vibration is reduced with twin balance shafts. The current Ecotec line is manufactured in Tonawanda, New York and Kaiserslautern, Germany. Until the discontinuation of Saturn, it was also produced at a plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee." As far if GM can build a good I 3 well they already have with Family 0 Ecotec Per Wiki GM Family 0 engine From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The Family 0 is a family of inline piston engines that was developed by GM Powertrain, a subsidiary of Opel, as a low-displacement engine for use on entry-level subcompact cars from Opel/Vauxhall. The engine was first introduced in 1996 Opel Corsa as a 3-cylinder version. It features light cast-iron engine block, aluminum cylinder head with Hollowcast camshafts and DOHC valvetrains driven by chain. Modern versions use variable intake technology. * 1.0 L Straight-3 (973 cc): 40 kW / 55 hp, 82 N·m (60 lb·ft) @ 2800 rpm * 1.0 L Straight-3 (973 cc): 43 kW / 58 hp, 85 N·m (63 lb·ft) * 1.0 L Straight-3 (998 cc): 73.4 mm (2.89 in) bore, 78.6 mm (2.94 in) stroke, 10.5:1 compression. * 1.2 L Straight-4 (1199 cc): 72.5 mm (2.85 in) bore, 72.6 mm (2.86 in) stroke, 10.1:1 compression, 75 hp (55 kW) @ 5600 rpm, 110 N·m (81 lb·ft) @ 4000 rpm * 1.2 L Straight-4 (1229 cc): 73.4 mm (2.89 in) bore, 72.6 mm (2.86 in) stroke, 10.5:1 compression
  6. Oh I forgot to tell ya all that the Ramblers 1st gear was UNSYNCHRONIZED !!!!! If you were in traffic and got slowed down in the city arround 10mph it took forever to get up some speed maybe about 30mph IIRC. What I would have given for a Saginaw from a Chevy but it also had an enclosed driveshaft ball socket even at the tail shaft. But it was a tank you couldn't hurt it.
  7. This is their biggest challenge and something Cadillac (nor Lincoln) has been able to do for the past 15-20 years. That is why their sales volume kept dropping. The CTS brought in a new buyer compared to the old Seville and Deville/DTS, but I wonder how much of that was import luxury conquest compared to mainstream buyers moving up to a luxury car. I think Cadillac's areas for improvement need to be build quality, fuel economy, and driving dynamics. Especially for overseas markets. The CTS is their only car that is decent at driving dynamics and even it didn't wow me in anyway when I drove it. A BMW is a much better driving car. Cadillac loses the performance buyer to the Germans and the old folks that want worry free and good mileage buy Lexus. So they have to find a way to appeal to those buyers. Smk I thought that Buick was supposed to be in line with Lexus? Your always harping on that point that XTS should not be a Caddy but a Buick so what's the target market the Germans or the Japanese? Just wondering trying to see your view of Caddys position not riding ya

  9. I'm getting a feeling of a traverse sedan from this & not in a good way
  10. Camino glad the tire was saved in the future they have a special plug that is called a radial plug it looks like a mushroom with the cap flattened. It combines the plug with a patch and IIRC come in 2 diameters.FWIW
  11. Sorry guys those underpowered 70's cars were what I grew up with and spawned an awful lot of gear heads. The 50-60s cars were what we got in High school & after we got jobs we bought or were given the newer cars and then the fun started in the garage Camino I liked the woody trucks better than the wagons but a nice Kingswood Estate say 1969 ish now
  12. Kid

  14. Yeah with some money a S/C 3800 swap the S/C for a turbo it could be fun. Also thought of an Allante with the S/C North*.
  15. Yep people like Yellow Dart are having the last laugh with tank fulls like the 49mpg he reported. I'd love to see what he could get hypermileing that ECO!

  17. Saw it first run at the Dixie Drive-in
  18. If you want to lower the weight of the wiring & electrical system you need to raise the operating voltage. The higher the voltage the lower the amperage needed to operate most systems. GM had looked into a high voltage electrical system 72 volts DC IIRC. I don't know if the BAS system was the outcome but I think that was part of it. If fully implemented it would lower the weight. Just think no starter or alternator only a generator/starter component thinner wiring smaller wiper, blower & hydrolic motors ...
