  1. There are better choices out there, but I can see why these cars are popular. The Civic is a lot of car for the money. I find it to be a little too cramped though, and the styling inside and out is dated. The Corolla is spacious and more livable in the back than the tight Cruze or Malibu.
  2. How about stop making ugly, bloated vehicles? The problem is that Hondas have gone upmarket and are plenty nice, and there's little reason to get an Acura, especially when they are aesthetically challenged. Most Californians won't care about AWD and don't need the extra traction, and it just adds weight, cost, complexity, and hurts fuel economy. The TLX is a step in the right direction over the TL, but I don't think it will have much staying power.
  3. My brother has a Tesla. He has done the 400 mile San Francisco to L.A. trip with no problem. Just need one stop at the supercharger station in the middle of the trip at the Grapevine during a lunch break. Another charge at LAX the next day to get back to the Grapevine..
  4. Good to see Mazda succeeed. The Mazda3 is pricier than its competitors. I'm sorry to see the Mazda5 canceled in the U.S. I don't like the current version, but I would've considered the redone model if they were to bring it here.
  5. The G37 sedan is being renamed the Q40 for 2015, which will be its final model year. There was no 2014 G37 (the sedans on the lots were a late build of 2013 G37s, though the G37 coupe was renamed the Q60 for 2014. GM has changed model names within a product cycle, but they tend to transition to the new name. The 1982 Pontiac J2000 -> 1983 Pontiac 2000 -> 1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird -> 1985 Pontiac Sunbird. 1985 Buick Somerset Regal (coupe) -> 1986/87 Buick Somerset (coupe) and 1986/87 Buick Skylark (sedan) -> 1988 Buick Skylark (coupe/sedan). Cadillac's new naming convention is horrible and lacks imagination. Cadillac should not be a "me-too" of anybody else. GM should have learned the lesson of throwing away model names with equity. If alphanumerics are so great, they should get rid of Escalade. Cadillac's biggest problem right now is probably CUE turning away customers. Infiniti probably has the worst model names right now, with Lincoln close behind. Acura screwed up when they changed Legend and Integra to RL and RSX.
  6. Great write-up, and congrats on your new skills. For small, high revving engines, a stick is ideal for control and to keep the revs up. I learned to drive stick on my first Integra that my dad drove home from the dealership. The first night, he gave me a lesson at my high school parking lot, and then I was on my own. Stalled it many times, and there were times I wish I got the automatic, but I'm certainly glad I have the skills now and have later owned another three vehicles with sticks. That being said, I now prefer automatics because it's one less thing I have to deal with when driving (can't wait for autonomous vehicles!), especially in stop and go traffic. I've driven a few BMWs with the DSG and found the transmission to be entirely unsatisfying. It's better to go full automatic or full manual.
  7. Regarding Acura, the RLX is irrelevant, but once inventory builds up for the TLX, Acura sales should jump.
  8. Optima is doing well despite the age of the car. K900 sales numbers are terrible. Wonder how many they were planning to sell. It seems too ambition for Kia, and the Cadenza isn't doing well either. The cheap vehicles are doing fantastic.
  9. Is Mitsubishi going to have a replacement to the Galant? The terrible, bloated Eclipse is not missed. The styling of the new Outlander is dull, and it hasn't gotten good reviews. The Lancer is dated. The third-world Mirage is just awful.
  10. Almost all mid-size sedans are boring-looking. I like the new Sonata exterior styling better than the slightly overdone last model. The interior looks exceptionally dull, but I have yet to sit in one.
  11. The Regal is one of my favorite cars. I drove the original German-built version and not the newer Canadian models. My biggest problem with it is the tight rear seat, which is an unfortunate Epsilon packaging issue. I can see why buyers will often go with the cheaper Verano, with an interior not a lot different in size, including also a too-small back seat.
  12. CTS should have been the STS. The looks of the car is mature and not youthful. CTS did very well as the entry level Cadillac. As the CTS grew in size in the latest generation and bumped up in price, there is sticker shock. ATS is too tight. The stretched version of the ATS should have been the CTS.
  13. What I find most interesting are the black bow ties on the Rally Edition, which I think are the first factory bow ties that are not gold since 2004?
  14. For family sedans, it's all about form following function and pricing. Bland has not held back the market leaders in this segment. If the new roofline improves room in back and the feeling of spaciousness, it's a good move. I like the cleaned up front end more than the last one. The Kia Optima is supposed to be redone for 2016, and it will probably remain the more stylish, sportier offering.
  15. The grille is better. I still haven't warmed up to the new badge.
  16. Yes, the two smaller guys have nicer product than the bigger guys. With the new Legacy, sales should go up even more.
  17. The Fit is on my short list right now if I decide to replace the Prelude. The EX-L model goes for about $21,000, and there are no dealer discounts. In comparison, a new 2014 Accord EX-L 4-cylinder has about a $3,500 discount, to about $26,000, which to me is the better buy. The Civic isn't even worth considering.
  18. Thanks guys. Worked on the Prelude (trying to replace door lock cylinder, and the driver's door window glass is out of adjustment), went to a trampoline place with my daughter, and worked in the yard. And Happy birthday to Loki.
  19. I agree that the Mazda3 is the best car in this class, but it costs a couple thousand dollars more than equivalent competitors. The Forte can also get expensive when it's loaded up, but with a judicious choice of options, it can be quite a value.
  20. It's been almost 10 years since I bought a new vehicle, and my 3 vehicles average out to 14.5 years old. I may be replacing a vehicle later this year, so the average age may go down for me.
