  1. I couldn't imagine a compact diesel with an automatic...but they have to do that for the stupid Americans that can't drive a stick.
  2. Was behind a Bolt EV autonomous out testing today. I've seen a lot of autonomous vehicles testing in Scottsdale.
  3. I like the fastback style hatches like the A7 and Mondeo. The more vertical hatch works better for a wagon or CUV.
  4. Several. Not US GM, but midsize hatches are common in Europe..such as the current Mondeo, Insignia, etc..Audi A7 and Panamera are two big ones in the US, for example.
  5. Turned it in Saturday....back in Phoenix for a few weeks to pack up and move. First time I'd had a rental for 3 weeks since 1999 when I had a Chrysler 300M for 3 weeks. It was a good drive overall, had a mix of suburban, potholed city driving, freeway driving, a bit of winding country roads, and winter weather (snow, sleet, rain, gropple, freezing rain) to deal with. The tire pressure warning light seemed a bit flaky, I checked the tires a couple times, but once it came on, it wouldn't go off. All in all, a decent midsize sedan, lots of interior storing cubbies, big trunk, practical and pleasant. The thing that stuck in my head (don't know why) is that I was driving in Ohio in a Tennessee-built German car with a Florida plate, with my AZ driver's license and CO cell number....
  6. I'd like to see a Malibu hatch...it already has a fastback roofline, a hatch could make it more practical w/ the same styling..
  7. looks like the offspring of a Juke and a Veloster.
  8. It's a distinctive design...the front is definitely evocative of past Alfas, and it's not the usual boring, predictable trapezoidial giant grille too many cars have today...and I like the offset front license plate instead of the usual, boring predicable centered plate. The side profile is less distinct, showing strong BMW 3-series design cues though...how Alfa will be received in the US market is a good question, it's basically an unknown new brand to anyone under 40 or so.
  9. I think the black bowties are weak, but that's just my opinion..
  10. Meh...the blue oval has been the blue oval for so long, wouldn't make sense in body color...brand logos have very specific colors and fonts, using arbitrary colors would violate every rule of design and branding. Chevy bowties need to be chrome w/ gold or blue...
  11. I could see that...but got to keep the Ford logo chrome and blue...I've seen too many Fords with the logo covered in matte black that looks so freakin' stupid, IMO...
  12. It will be interesting to see if the Grand Wagoneer ever happens... I'm surprised they didn't just reskin the Durango in Jeep clothing 5 years ago...(since the 3rd gen Durango is basically a LWB 4th gen GC).
  13. I like chrome also, though with wheels I like aluminum alloy finish rather than chrome. blackout or body color trim screams late 80s-early 90s to me, not in a good way.. depends on the model, of course, some wear it better than others. I do like black wheels in some contexts.
  14. It's amazing they are still in the US market..they seem so invisible, though I'm amazed they sold ~6500 vehicles here in Jan.
  15. Honda NSX-R (Mazda) Eunos Cosmo (beautiful '90s rotary powered coupe) Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R Land Rover Defender double cab pickup Renault Avantime (the idea of a minivan based 2dr ht is just so surreal)
  16. I've driven a couple of current generation Tahoes and a previous generation Yukon, they seemed pretty solid and tight to me, and the Tahoes drove very nicely, even on winding Az mountain roads..very comfortable and civilized...
  17. I saw a first gen Avalanche last week that someone had added cheesy chrome strips around the doors, where the plastic panels meet the body work, the edge of the hood, down the center of the hood, etc...
  18. My sister's Mercedes both had them...and they failed....thus couldn't get in the trunk.
  19. It seems GM does offer monochrome versions of their trucks but not their SUVs? They used to w/ some SUVs IIRC...the monochrome trim look seems like an 80s-90s thing...I could see offering it as an option, but I like chrome...not on wheels, but grilles, etc. One trend I see is people doing everything blacked out incl. the badging...not for me, looks cheap, IMO...
  20. I wonder if the new Expedition will still be V6 only? That was an odd move. I wonder if the weight difference vs the Tahoe was due to the age of the body and platform (warmed over 1997) and the IRS.
  21. On the Passat, the trunk release is hidden, under the ledge above the license plate, slightly off center to the left. The funny thing is I remember Jettas 30+ years ago having strange trunk release behavior also--the trunk could be shut but not locked, or shut and locked. That was a European car difference I always found odd compared to American cars of the same era---on American cars, if the trunk was shut, it was locked. Shut and locked were/are two different concepts on European cars (my sister's old Mercedes were the same way).
  22. I'd love to see a Tahoe SS and Suburban SS, Escalade V-series, etc w/ lots of power...
  23. They have a lot of brand equity with Jeep as far as SUVs go, though. And Ram seems to still sell well w/ full size trucks. But zilch in the (albeit declining) compact and midsize car niches.
  24. A couple 'final day' pics from about a month ago....my sister finally got rid of the dead Mercedes from our carports, I had driven these cars quite a bit since moving to AZ in 2008. They were money pits, glad neither of us will waste money on them again. Both went to local Benz fanatics that want to get them on the road again. The '91 300CE had a total electrical failure about a year ago (and a wiper motor fire), and the 500SEL hasn't been driven in about 5 years, was periodically started until I noticed all the gas pouring out under it. Time to move on...one good thing about moving is it forces you to deal with the clutter from your life. Once I get back to AZ next week and get back into packing, my Jeep will be the next to go, I can't see driving a 17 yr old vehicle w/ 170k on it 2000 miles...time for something fresh.
