    2016 Chicago Auto Show: 2017 Nissan Armada


    • What happens when you add Nissan badges to an Infiniti QX80


    The Nissan Armada was a dinosaur in the brand's SUV lineup and we're not talking about the size. The current model has been with us since 2004 and has changed very little. We were wondering if anything was going to happen, especially the sister car - the Infiniti QX80 - had been updated a couple years ago. Tonight, Nissan answered this question with a new Armada for 2017.

     

    The new Armada looks very similar to the QX80 in terms of overall looks. The only difference is a new front end that comes from the Titan. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches. Compared to the outgoing model, the 2017 Armada is 1.2 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider, rides 2.2 inches lower, and features a smaller wheelbase.

     

    Move inside and the similarities to the QX80 continue with both models sharing the same dash design and layout. All trims get heated seats, navigation, dual-zone climate control, and push-button start. Seating ranges from eight on the SV and SL trims, to seven on the top of the line Platinum (second row captain chairs).

     

    Power comes from an updated 5.6L Endurance V8 producing 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Yes, this the same engine you'll find under the hood of the Titan and Titan XD starting this April. A seven-speed automatic comes standard, and there is a choice between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. Nissan says with either layout, the Armada can tow up to 8,500 pounds.

     

    Nissan says the Armada will be available at dealers later this summer. Pricing will be announced at a later time.

    CHICAGO – Nissan debuted the all-new 2017 Armada full-size SUV this evening prior to its upcoming appearance at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, the largest auto show in North America. Nissan is also displaying a trio of "Winter Warriors," custom-built Pathfinder, Murano and Rogue models equipped with special snow tracks in place of their wheels and tires.

     


    The new Armada features a fresh exterior design, a comfortable full-feature cabin, enhanced performance and an extensive list of available safety and convenience features – including Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), Backup Collision Intervention (BCI), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Distance Control Assist (DCA), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Intervention (BSI) and Blind Spot Warning (BSW).

    The new Armada also continues the nameplate's reputation for value and choice, offering a range of three high-content grade levels – SV, SL and Platinum – in both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive configurations. In addition, the 2017 Armada offers an exceptional array of standard features, including Nissan Navigation with NavTraffic and NavWeather information (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately) and 8.0-inch color display, heated front seats and 13-speaker Bose® audio system.

     

    The all-new Armada is built on the heritage of the Nissan Patrol, which has been a workhorse for the world for many decades. While it is intended primarily for family adventures here in North America, Armada remains true to its roots as a strong, durable and authentic full-size, 8-passenger SUV. As part of its adventure-ready spirit, the new Armada offers standard towing capacity of 8,500 pounds for both 4WD and 2WD models (when properly equipped).

     

    Armada's redesigned body features an aggressive stance with bold V-motion front grille and standard LED low-beam headlights and signature LED Daytime Running Lights – maintaining the previous generation's rugged, athletic image but with added contemporary style. In the rear, bold combination lights include LED taillights.

     

    Inside, the 2017 Armada combines style, roominess and premium interior comfort – including special emphasis on quietness and quick interior cooling and heating. "Library level" interior noise levels (at idle) are achieved through the use of acoustic glass on the windshield and the front side windows, as well as through expanded use (versus the previous generation) of sound absorption materials.

     

    The new Endurance V8, while maintaining the same 5.6-liter displacement as its predecessor, offers an increase in horsepower to 390 from the previous 317, thanks in part to the addition of several advanced technologies – including new Direct Injection Gas (DIG™) and advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) systems. Also new is the advanced 7-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the previous 5-speed automatic.

    Thanks for the tape measure stats there, Mr. Maley.  I guess the vehicle's reduced height fooled me in photos posted earlier.

    WOW, So now you can over pay for an Infiniti badge or pay less and get the same XQ80 at Nissan.

     

    Still ugly as always, dated looking and is the wrinkles in the leather on the door supposed to say quality or just we were to cheap to build it right?

    I wonder how long this and it's Infiniti cousin, along with the LX570, Tahoe, Expedition, and other big body on frame SUVs stick around.    I feel like a lot of them are as dated as the Crown Vic and Town car were, but there are so few, they sort of have the market sewn up, until one day the market just dies all together.  You'd think as we near 2025 these manufacturers will move to unibody full size crossovers.

    As long as gas prices stay cheap the market for full size SUVs will remain, I suspect...I have driven the latest generation of Tahoe, it's a very comfortable daily driver and road trip vehicle..doesn't feel truckish at all.

    Today Feb 11th 2016 Oil closed at $26.72 per barrel for long range contracts. Wholesale Gas closed at .81 cents per gallon.

     

    SMK if you had driven a current Escalade, Yukon or Suburban/Tahoe you would realize these large BOF SUVs drive like any other car out there and in many ways better than CUVs. My BOF Trailblazer SS AWD has a tighter turning radius than the Unibody CUVs sold by Chevy, Ford, etc.

     

    Do not discount BOF as being inferior as there are plenty of examples that show it does compete and beats Unibody.

    The tighter turning radius has nothing to do with it being BOF, it's because of its north-south RWD/4WD drivetrain rather than the transverse FWD/AWD layout of the Equinox, Explorer, etc.

    I understand what you are staying and the point I am making is some people here feel Unibody design is better than BOF and can handle better than BOF. Yes the powertrain layout affects how they can do the suspension and the turn in and out of the steering. Yet the over all handling of my BOF is superior to many Unibody showing that engineering can and does continue to improve old technology to outperform many newer technologies.

    Kind of a moot point, as BOF is only used for trucks and full size SUVs today, and people don't buy those for handling.

    I get better fuel economy from the Tahoe/Suburban than I do from the Lambdas or explorer v6 anyway. What am I saving by going to a large crossover instead of a full size SUV? Every Lambda I've driven has been a pig on gas.

    I have never, nor have I ever seen backed-up claims of anyone getting inferior mileage in a Lambda compared to that in a Tahoe or Suburban.

     

    The new GM full-size SUV's feel cheap and flimsy. I have no doubt that a unibody construction would help alleviate that. That's not to say moving away from BOF is necessary, as so long as gas stays cheap, the things are gonna sell.

    The new GM full-size SUV's feel cheap and flimsy. I have no doubt that a unibody construction would help alleviate that. That's not to say moving away from BOF is necessary, as so long as gas stays cheap, the things are gonna sell.

    I drive both the Lambdas and the full sizers regularly on long distance trips and typically over the same routes. The Lambdas (Enclave or Acadia only) typically return 19 - 21 mpg. The full sizers (suburban usually, Yukon or Tahoe sometimes) will return 21 - 23.

    My trips are nearly always 90% highway crossing back and forth from Pittsburgh to the east coast. I did over 2 dozen trips like this over 2015 and 2014 time span.

    My theory as to why its like this relates to the need for the Lambdas to need to downshift more often and to a deeper gear to get up the hills and that the Suburban can run as a 4 cylinder for a good chunk of the time aside from when climbing hills.

    Hence the tiny new Acadia.

    Tiny? It's bigger than a Grand Cherokee.

      The exterior borrows heavily from the Cruze and Malibu designs. Up front is a revised grille (similar to the one seen on the Cruze) with new headlights and LED daytime running lights. Around the side is a character line that swoops down and 'Equinox' name on the front doors. The back features a restyled tailgate, blacked-out pillars to give the impression of wrap-around glass, and horizontal taillights. The interior matches up with newer Chevrolet models with a floating screen (either seven or eight-inches) and either cloth or leather covering bits of the dash. One key item Chevrolet is quick to point is the dashboard is lower to provide better visibility.
      There will be three turbocharged four-cylinders on offer; a 1.5L, 2.0L, and a 1.6L diesel. The 2.0L turbo will come paired with GM's new nine-speed automatic. We're guessing the 1.5 and 1.6 will get a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive will come standard and an all-wheel drive system with a disconnecting rear axle when not in use will be optional. One item we're glad to see is Chevrolet dropping 400 pounds out of the Equinox.
      On the safety front, the Equinox will feature the options of surround-view camera system, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert. Two new features will be Teen Driver (can set limits on speed and volume for your young driver) and Rear Seat Reminder (reminds you to check the back seat to prevent kids from overheating on a hot day).
      No word on pricing, but Chevrolet says the 2018 Equinox will arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2017.

      Today’s compact SUV customers want a vehicle that meets all of their needs, from design, connectivity and safety perspectives. The Equinox delivers on all fronts, starting with its fresh new design and all-new propulsion systems.
      Fresh, new design
      The new Equinox’s expressive exterior has a lean, muscular skin echoing the global Chevrolet design cues and sculpted shapes seen in the Volt, Malibu and Cruze. Extensive aero development in the wind tunnel influenced the sleek shape.
      It is a richer, more detailed design featuring chrome trim on all models and Malibu-inspired styling. Projector-beam headlamps are standard, along with LED daytime running lamps. At the rear, horizontal taillamps emphasize the Equinox’s wide stance, while uplevel models feature LED taillamps.

      The interior takes advantage of the Equinox’s all-new architecture to offer a down-and-away instrument panel, while a low windshield base provides a commanding outward view. With it, the bottom cushions tilt forward when the split-folding seatbacks are lowered, allowing a flat floor for easier loading.
      Connectivity

      The new Equinox is the first Chevrolet model in North America to use an all-turbocharged, multi-engine powertrain lineup. That includes the expected segment-exclusive 1.6L turbo-diesel that will offer customers excellent efficiency and capability.
      “It is an all-new SUV from the ground up and one that takes on the industry’s biggest competitors with a stronger architecture, greater efficiency and more technology,” said Rick Spina, executive chief engineer. “And it looks great doing it.”

      A range of three turbocharged engines — including the compact SUV segment’s first turbo-diesel in North America — provides customers more choices when it comes to performance, efficiency and capability in the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox.
      They include a 1.5L turbo, a 2.0L turbo — matched with GM’s new nine-speed automatic transmission — and a 1.6L turbo-diesel.
      “With three choices, customers can select an engine that offers more of the attributes that are important to them: efficiency, performance and capability,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president, Global Propulsion Systems. “The advantage for each is the power of a larger engine and the efficiency of a smaller engine.”
      The new Equinox is the first Chevrolet model in North America to use an all-turbocharged, multi-engine powertrain lineup. That includes the expected segment-exclusive 1.6L turbo-diesel that will offer customers excellent efficiency and capability.
      “It is an all-new SUV from the ground up and one that takes on the industry’s biggest competitors with a stronger architecture, greater efficiency and more technology,” said Rick Spina, executive chief engineer. “And it looks great doing it.”

      Mercedes-Benz has decided to crash luxury off-road wagon party that Audi and Volvo are putting on by introducing the E-Class All-Terrain. 
      The All-Terrain sets itself apart from the standard E-Class wagon with new bumpers, plastic surrounds for the wheel arches, and a wheel/tire package for this specific model. The ride height has been raised by an inch, but the air suspension system can raise the vehicle by about 0.3 inches. Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system features an 'All Terrain' mode that allows the vehicle to go a little bit further into the bush. 
      For the time being in the UK, the E-Class All-Terrain will only be offered with a 2.0L turbodiesel-four with 192 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Engines for other European markets haven't been announced.
      Mercedes-Benz will debut the E-Class All-Terrain later this month at the Paris Motor Show, with sales beginning sometime next year. Don't hold your breath on the All-Terrain coming to the U.S. anytime soon.

      Stuttgart.  From unpaved tracks to steep, serpentine snow-bound roads, the new E-Class All-Terrain can tackle routes where conventional estates have to give up, thanks to greater ground clearance and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Rugged styling and flared wheel arches also give it a tough look. The E-Class All-Terrain makes its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show 2016. The first cars will arrive in the UK from spring 2017, while pricing and specification will be announced in early 2017.
      “No E-Class has ever been as versatile as the All-Terrain. The new model combines a striking look in SUV style with the intelligent space concept of the estate. This is coupled with lots of innovative safety features and the multi-award-winning E-Class interior,” said Ola Källenius, Member of the Daimler management board responsible for Sales and Marketing of Mercedes Benz Cars. “With 4MATIC all-wheel drive as a standard feature and increased ground clearance thanks to the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension, the All-Terrain is a flexible all-rounder – for unpaved roads, family and leisure time.”
      Thanks to off-road styling elements the All-Terrain has a powerful and robust appearance which also distinguishes it from the classic estate. Dynamism and modern luxury unite to make the All-Terrain an ambassador for the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of the sensuous clarity that defines modern luxury.
      An eye-catching feature of the front is the SUV-style two-fin grille with the star integrated in the centre. The distinctive front bumper and lower panelling, electroplated in silver-chrome, also contribute to the robust appearance. The top part of the three-part front bumper is painted in the body colour and the lower part comes in grained black plastic.
      At the side, the black wheel arch covers are a distinctive feature that emphasise the car’s all-terrain character. This also applies to the black side skirt that features a chrome trip strip. Three exclusive alloy wheel sets in 19- and 20-inch formats with higher sidewalls give the vehicle a confident look, greater ground clearance and enhanced comfort on rough roads.
      The All-Terrain also features a model-specific three-part bumper at the rear with the top part painted in body colour and the lower part in grained black plastic. Further features typical of an SUV include robust load sill protection and an underbody guard electroplated in silver-chrome.
      The interior includes aluminium-carbon look trim that is exclusive to the All-Terrain, stainless steel sports pedals and floor mats with All-Terrain lettering. The equipment is based on the AVANTGARDE interior line, while EXCLUSIVE and designo appointments are optionally available [UK details are to be confirmed]. The new model boasts all the load compartment flexibility of the E-Class estate, such as the rear seat cargo position and a standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat back. All E-Class innovations relating to safety, comfort and convenience are available.
      The All-Terrain will be launched as an E 220 d 4MATIC (143 kW/194 hp) with the newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine. A short time later a variant with a six-cylinder diesel engine will follow. Both models come with the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard.

      The All-Terrain has DYNAMIC SELECT as standard. This enables five driving programmes to be selected with different engine, transmission, ESP® and steering characteristics. A special model-specific feature is the All-Terrain driving programme, which offers settings for off-road driving and was derived from the GLE. The even more comfortable suspension configuration and the large wheels with higher sidewalls noticeably further increase ride comfort on rough roads compared with the E-Class.
      Selecting the All-Terrain driving programme with the driving programme switch raises the chassis via the standard AIR BODY CONTROL by +20 mm up to a speed of 35 km/h. The thresholds for ESP®, active yaw control and acceleration skid control (ASR) are adjusted accordingly. The All-Terrain driving programme has a special indicator in the vehicle display. Information displayed there includes the steering angle, the vehicle level (position of the air suspension), the angle of slope and the angle of inclination, the accelerator/brake position and a compass.
      Thanks to air suspension three levels from 0 to +35 mm are selectable. Independent of the driving programme the highest level can also be selected manually with the level button on the centre console.       Back in the late-nineties, Volvo took a page out of Subaru's playbook by taking one their wagons and making a bit of more capable off-road. The end result was the V70 Cross Country and would become one Volvo's iconic models the next two decades. Now the successor the V70 has gotten its own Cross Country variant.
      Today, Volvo revealed the 2017 V90 Cross Country. Starting with the basic V90, Volvo lifted it 2.36 inches to give it an overall ground clearance of 8.2 inches. New bumpers, wheels, and underbody protection finish the transformation. Volvo also made adjustments to the electronic chassis system, stability control, and power steering to make the V90 Cross Country handle tough conditions.
      Volvo doesn't mention what engines that V90 Cross Country will come with. We assume that it will mirror the other 90 series models - T5, T6, and T8 plug-in hybrid. No matter the engine, it will be paired with all-wheel drive.
      Volvo is planning to start production of the V90 Cross Country this fall. No word on when it will arrive in the U.S.

      Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has unveiled the eagerly awaited V90 Cross Country, completing its 90 Series line-up.
       
      Since the introduction of the first Cross Country almost 20 years ago, Volvo Cars has become synonymous with the rugged all-road, all-weather product category, with a growing stable of Cross Country models.
       
      Volvo Cars’ Cross Country models fulfil an increasingly important part of the Swedish automaker’s product portfolio as luxury car buyers seek out a more experienced-based lifestyle that occasionally takes them off the beaten track.
