    Spying: Next-Generation Chevrolet Equinox Slims Down


    • Honey, I shrunk the Equinox!

    The current Chevrolet Equinox is nearing the end of its lifecycle and we have been wondering when we'll be seeing any information about it. Thanks to a spy photographer, we have some photos to show what Chevrolet has in store.

     

    The most apparent thing we can tell the photos is the new model is smaller than the outgoing model. This confirms a report back from January that Chevrolet will be moving the Equinox downmarket to compete better with compact crossovers. We can't you much about the exterior thanks to excellent camouflage job done by GM.

     

    Car and Driver says the Equinox will use GM's Delta architecture and possibly feature the same suspension setup as the Buick Envision - struts up front and a multilink setup in the rear. Power is expected to come from a 2.5L four-cylinder and a turbo engine - Car and Driver isn't sure if it will be the 1.5L or 2.0L turbo. A choice of front or all-wheel drive will be offered.

     

    When could we see the new Equinox? Either late this year or early next year.

    Not much to really tell at this stage, wish there was a better shot of it along side the current model to really tell if it is smaller or bigger. Hard to tell from the single image they have.

    I guess I can tell it is smaller because I have been staring at many Equinox photos to tell this. But give it time and we'll see it out on the road where it will be easier to tell.

    Cool, I would LOVE for GM to shock the world again like they did with the BOLT concept by showing off an Equinox Plug-in powertrain, aka using a beefed up version of the VOLT system but with the battery of the BOLT. That way you should have about a 600 mile range of driving for road trips but at least the first 200+ would be pure electric. :D

    An excellent idea to move to Delta2 and make it smaller.  The current Equinox is about a foot longer than an Escape or CRV.  This will get it right sized, and it opens the door for Chevy to add a crossover in between the Equinox and Traverse.  Being smaller, this might be close to the Malibu's weight, the 1.5L turbo could be used, that should top 32 mpg easily.

    Preferably I want to see a 2.5L base engine and a 2.0T optional. Even with extreme weight loss, I don't want to see the 1.5L engine trying to move a 3500-3700 lb crossover.

     

    I don't expect the EPA rating to increase dramatically, at least on the highway, because the current model seems to have trouble cracking 30 mpg at all. An honest 22/32 mpg would beat the outgoing Equinox.

    Well here is what we will see. 

    Yes they will be physically smaller outside but the interior will packaged much better and will be nearly the same size if not more usable. The present model is not packaged as well as it should or could have been. 

     

    They new model will be lighter and performance braking and MPG will be better. I do not expect a big gain in MPG but the related power vs MPG will be much better with the added torque. 

     

    There will be a new larger model slotted in to take the place of the present model in size similar to the new GMC Acadia. 

     

    The new model will be cheaper than the present model starting price but I expect it can be optioned right up to near where it is today. 

     

    As for a plug in I think there is still work to do. If you note there really is not much in high profile plug in models because of the large frontal area. CD is a real range killer and that is why most EV plug in  models are lower profile cars. 

    I remember them saying just the squaring off of the rear bumper on the Volt add a good amount of range just because of the Aero effect. Until we have better batteries I do not expect much in a plug in CUV unless it is short like a Tesla X where it is more a tall car than CUV. 

    Not only is the large frontal area an issue on drag but if it is tall the suspension also takes a chunk out of the CD number.  We will get there in time but just the physical nature of the vehicle hurts Miles per charge and they are still getting the cars to where they need to be and there is still work to do.

    Rumor is the Terrain will have the 1.5 turbo base and the 2.5 liter will be the optional engine, so I'd imagine Chevy will do the same.  In a way that makes sense, because the Buick Envision at $35,000 has the 2.5 liter, I don't think a $23,000 Equinox would have the same engine, they'll make you pay more for it.  I guess time will tell.  I am sure CAFE will dictate a lot of what engines end up in these new crossovers.

    Yes they all will have a 2.0 turbo. 

     

    Yes they will be all getting a more tall car look but still CUV styling. The look will impact the GMC more as it has more of a Truck look than the NOX.

    I originally hated the Terrain but now I own one and come to love it. While I know it is the same thing as the Nox it just does not have that feminine look. 

    Hey I don't highlight my hair and I still got a pair, what can I say? 

     

    I have always preferred the GMC styling even if it was just the grills. It always appeared less cluttered and more refined. Though the new Chevy truck nose is damn good looking in mono chrome.

    Looks are subjective and you have yours and I have mine. My point is the GMC was a slam dunk before now I would at least have to think about it. Even my GMC buddies have said the same thing. Two of them have bought GMC full sized trucks in the last 2 years and both said they may have gone over to Chevy if they had this model out. 

     

    As for the fem look 50% of buyers today are women so it makes sense. But with that said women like trucks too. That is why my wife wanted the Terrain. She grew up driving her dads truck often. I love it when she wants to opt for the largest wheel packages too as she said they look better. This takes the pressure off of me when I want that option. LOL!  We got the 19" on the Terrain because that is what she wanted and and it is was I was going to push for if she had not wanted them.

     

    Powerful engines are also something we are both in agreement with. She has never turned down a V6 option or Supercharged option. If there was a V8 she would want it too. 

    Now keep in mind she is not into cars like I am but we have the same wants when we buy. 

    She also hates minivans and can shoot a gun with a high degree of accuracy. I was lucky to find her.

    current Equinox is super popular due to passenger space and that sliding rear seat.  Four large adults can ride in it all day long.  It's cargo area is not as good though.  Some of the room is due to to a larger wheelbase.

     

    It looks like the new one in the spy photos has a shorter wb, but also a lot less hood.  It's proportioning is on the way to minivan (kind of like the newest Escape).  The current CRv for as much of a terrible device as it is, has pretty good packaging and room and space.  I would expect that Chevy has improved how much of the space it is using, even if overall space goes down some.

     

    The new Acadia which is a major gaffe to bring that nameplate down in size, actually is probably what the Terrain should have morphed into.  Enlarge the Terrain or call it Envoy instead of undermining everything about the Acadia brand.  Chevy won't bear that sin here, there should be a new model to slot between this new Equinox (which then won't have to squeeze in a useless third row) and the Traverse, which they ought to keep the same size as it is now or we really know there are complete idiots running GM.

     

    As per classic GM though, they will probably still try to jack up the price on the model change, while at the same time reducing room and downsizing the motors.  If they weren't under the tyranny of agencies and governments, they could just make their vehicles the size customers want, with the engines they want.  The 1.5 in the new Malibu is actually a bit of a dog and i think it will struggle with a few hundred more pounds.  I've driven the Escape 1.6 and the new 1.5 has about the same specs, and it's not a complete dog.  Why GM's 1.5 is deficient to the Ford, I'm not sure.  There are a lot of GM vehicles that would benefit from a 1.75 liter displacement (that matches my whiskey bottles)......a nice happy medium between the 2.0 and the 1.5 for power and mileage.

     

    The 2.5 is a boat anchor, i really hope it doesn't surface here.

     

    I get mixed reads in my research for the current Equinox and Terrain.  I have rellies and friends who have them and like them.  I read online that their gas mileage is not near as advertised.  I have another friend who got a 15 equinox for a company vehicle and he hates it (and he apparently already had a cracked intake manifold).  I didn't really like the way they drove myself but realize this is not a sports sedan.

     

    If the new Equinox is as quiet inside and pleasurable for its class as a new Cruze, then I think their strong sales will continue.  If there is one area they need to keep their advantage over the Escape, it's rear seat space.  The Escape's rear seat is too tight and chintzy looking.

     

    Sedan sales keep going down, so many people i see in newest Escapes, Rav's, Equinoxes, Rogues etc.  I hope the Equinox is somewhat stylish, it will need whatever help it can get to compete vs. import names.

      Most of us knew this was going happen, but there were some that hoping that somehow the Chevrolet SS would continue on after production of the Holden VF Commodore ended. To those who fall into this camp, it is time to move on as the SS will be no more after 2017.
      Alan Batey, head of GM North America confirmed this yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show. Batey also said there would not be a replacement for the rear-drive sedan.
      “Obviously it’s unlikely there is anything to follow because of what is going on in Australia. It was an optimistic play from our perspective and it’s played out well and been a nice addition to the range. It’s not mainstream. It’s small volume,” said Batey
      In 2016, Chevrolet moved 3,013 SS sedans.

      The current Chevrolet Traverse has been with us for nine years and it was time for a replacement. This morning at the Detroit Auto Show, Chevrolet introduced the 2018 Traverse.
      The new Traverse's shape carries the spirit of the last-generation GMC Acadia. The shape is boxier with both the front and rear being squared-off. Chevrolet's new dual grille design and narrow headlights are present. In terms of size, the Traverse has grown with overall length measuring 204.3 inches long, riding on a 120.9-inch wheelbase. This makes it slightly bigger than a Chevrolet Tahoe (203.9 inches long, 116-inch overall wheelbase). Despite the increase in size, Chevrolet was able to slice off 351 pounds from the new Traverse (note: comparing front-wheel drive models).
      Inside, Chevrolet promises best in class head and legroom for those sitting in the second and third-row seats. This does come at a price as cargo space does decrease. Behind the third-row, the Traverse will offer 23 cubic feet, which beats the likes the Ford Explorer (21 cubic feet). Fold both rows and space increases to 99 cubic feet. Other interior details include either seven or eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility; OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi, and USB ports for all three-rows.
      Most Traverse models will come with the existing 3.6L V6 producing 305 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This has us scratching our heads since this engine was one our biggest issues with the current Chevrolet Traverse (and Buick Enclave). The new Traverse RS will use a new 2.0L turbo-four making 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Again, this is slightly odd as the RS is being positioned as the sporty-looking model with blacked-out elements. Both engines will come paired with a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. The V6 will only have the option of all-wheel drive. Speaking of all-wheel drive, the top-line High Country will come with the twin-clutch all-wheel drive system found in the Cadillac XT5. This system can decouple the rear-axle to help with fuel economy.

      Bold, refined new look with expected segment-best cargo space, third-row legroom DETROIT — Chevrolet today introduced the all-new 2018 Traverse. Wrapped in bold and refined styling, the completely redesigned Traverse offers technologies to help keep passengers of all ages and lifestyles comfortable and connected.
      Traverse will deliver what is expected to be best-in-class third-row legroom, maximum cargo room and passenger volume with an enhanced roster of available active safety features. 
      “The all-new Traverse offers the ultimate in style and convenience for the segment, with the versatility customers need and a thoughtful, spacious design they’ll love,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and brand chief, Global Chevrolet. “It’s the midsize SUV designed to help keep you safe, comfortable and connected.”
      When it goes on sale this fall, the 2018 Traverse will be the fourth updated crossover or SUV from Chevrolet within a year, joining the Trax, Bolt EV and 2018 Equinox, further strengthening the brand’s crossover and SUV lineup.
      “Nobody in the industry offers a broader, fresher lineup of SUVs and crossovers than Chevrolet,” said Batey. “From the all-electric Bolt EV to America’s longest-running nameplate, Suburban, we’ve got something for every customer and lifestyle.”
      Bold and refined 
      The 2018 Traverse has a new look inspired by Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs, with purposeful proportions complemented by premium cues such as chrome accents, LED signature lighting and available D-Optic LED headlamps.
      Chevrolet is adding two new trim levels for the 2018 Traverse — the sporty RS and luxurious High Country — to offer customers more choices for a personalized appearance.
      The new RS package includes unique, blacked-out exterior cues with a black chrome grille, black bowtie, 20-inch wheels and more.
      The High Country trim features premium content and technology, including a unique interior trim featuring Loft Brown leather appointments with suede accents, 20-inch polished wheels, High Country badging, D-Optic headlamps, standard twin-clutch AWD and power-fold third row seats.
      “The all-new Traverse blends Chevrolet’s characteristic SUV cues with capability and refinement,” said John Cafaro, executive director, Global Chevrolet Design. “Inside and out, it offers style with a purpose.”
      With available seating for up to eight and a longer wheelbase than the current model, the Traverse has few peers when it comes to capacity and roominess. In fact, the new Traverse is expected to offer best-in-class passenger volume as well as max cargo room at 98.5 cubic feet (2,789 liters), while greater storage options and larger bins throughout the ergonomically optimized cabin are designed to enhance convenience and versatility.
      Loading the Traverse is a breeze with a new Chevrolet bowtie logo lamp feature illuminating the ground to show where drivers need to place a foot to activate the available hands-free power liftgate.
      A new split-folding second-row seat improves on the Traverse’s original Smart Slide® feature. The curbside seat is capable of tipping up and sliding forward, even with a forward-facing child seat in place, to provide open and easy access to the third row.  Third-row legroom is expected to be the most spacious in the segment at 33.7 inches (856 mm).
      Connected and protected
      The 2018 Traverse offers purposeful technology designed to help keep passengers safe, comfortable and connected.
      Chevrolet’s latest connectivity technologies include available 7- and 8-inch-diagonal MyLink infotainment systems designed to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an available OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are products of Apple and Google and their terms and privacy statements apply.  Requires compatible smartphone and data plan rates apply.)
      Passengers will have access to USB charging ports in all three seating rows, available wireless charging and steering wheel-mounted phone and audio controls. Chevrolet’s Rear Seat Reminder feature is standard on all trim levels.
      When it comes to helping to protect passengers, a comprehensive suite of available safety technologies and adaptive crash-avoidance features offers ease of use and added peace of mind, with new available features including:
      Surround Vision D-Optic LED headlamps (standard on High Country and Premier) Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning Front Pedestrian Braking Forward Collision Alert Low and High-Speed Forward Automatic Braking. Teen Driver is standard, allowing parents to set certain controls and review performance in order to help encourage better driving habits, even when parents are not in the vehicle. 
      Performance and efficiency
      A new 3.6L V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission form the standard propulsion system, expected to offer nearly 10 percent more horsepower than the current model and a GM-estimated 25 mpg highway (FWD). The combination also supports an estimated 5,000-pound (2,268 kg) trailering capacity when properly equipped.
      Sporting the new RS trim, the Traverse will exclusively feature a 2.0L turbocharged engine that provides a unique driving experience, with more maximum torque than the V-6. It is also paired with the nine-speed automatic transmission.
      Both engines feature new intelligent stop/start technology that determines the best times for fuel-saving engine-stop events, based on a variety of driving factors.
      New Traction Mode Select is standard on all models and allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions. On available AWD models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, which helps save fuel and enhances refinement.
      High Country’s exclusive Advanced AWD system employs twin-clutch technology that optimizes traction for every condition it encounters. It is engineered for optimal performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions, while also providing enhanced stability in dry conditions.

      The 2018 Traverse has a new look inspired by Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs, with purposeful proportions complemented by premium cues such as chrome accents, LED signature lighting and available D-Optic LED headlamps.
      Chevrolet is adding two new trim levels for the 2018 Traverse — the sporty RS and luxurious High Country — to offer customers more choices for a personalized appearance.
      The new RS package includes unique, blacked-out exterior cues with a black chrome grille, black bowtie, 20-inch wheels and more.
      The High Country trim features premium content and technology, including a unique interior trim featuring Loft Brown leather appointments with suede accents, 20-inch polished wheels, High Country badging, D-Optic headlamps, standard twin-clutch AWD and power-fold third row seats.
      “The all-new Traverse blends Chevrolet’s characteristic SUV cues with capability and refinement,” said John Cafaro, executive director, Global Chevrolet Design. “Inside and out, it offers style with a purpose.”
      With available seating for up to eight and a longer wheelbase than the current model, the Traverse has few peers when it comes to capacity and roominess. In fact, the new Traverse is expected to offer best-in-class passenger volume as well as max cargo room at 98.5 cubic feet (2,789 liters), while greater storage options and larger bins throughout the ergonomically optimized cabin are designed to enhance convenience and versatility.
      Loading the Traverse is a breeze with a new Chevrolet bowtie logo lamp feature illuminating the ground to show where drivers need to place a foot to activate the available hands-free power liftgate.
      A new split-folding second-row seat improves on the Traverse’s original Smart Slide® feature. The curbside seat is capable of tipping up and sliding forward, even with a forward-facing child seat in place, to provide open and easy access to the third row.  Third-row legroom is expected to be the most spacious in the segment at 33.7 inches (856 mm).
      Connected and protected
      The 2018 Traverse offers purposeful technology designed to help keep passengers safe, comfortable and connected.
      Chevrolet’s latest connectivity technologies include available 7- and 8-inch-diagonal MyLink infotainment systems designed to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an available OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.       Passengers will have access to USB charging ports in all three seating rows, available wireless charging and steering wheel-mounted phone and audio controls. Chevrolet’s Rear Seat Reminder feature is standard on all trim levels.
      When it comes to helping to protect passengers, a comprehensive suite of available safety technologies and adaptive crash-avoidance features offers ease of use and added peace of mind, with new available features including:
      Surround Vision D-Optic LED headlamps (standard on High Country and Premier) Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning Front Pedestrian Braking Forward Collision Alert Low and High-Speed Forward Automatic Braking. Teen Driver is standard, allowing parents to set certain controls and review performance in order to help encourage better driving habits, even when parents are not in the vehicle. 
      Performance and efficiency
      A new 3.6L V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission form the standard propulsion system, expected to offer nearly 10 percent more horsepower than the current model and a GM-estimated 25 mpg highway (FWD). The combination also supports an estimated 5,000-pound (2,268 kg) trailering capacity when properly equipped.
      Sporting the new RS trim, the Traverse will exclusively feature a 2.0L turbocharged engine that provides a unique driving experience, with more maximum torque than the V-6. It is also paired with the nine-speed automatic transmission.
      Both engines feature new intelligent stop/start technology that determines the best times for fuel-saving engine-stop events, based on a variety of driving factors.
      New Traction Mode Select is standard on all models and allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions. On available AWD models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, which helps save fuel and enhances refinement.
      High Country’s exclusive Advanced AWD system employs twin-clutch technology that optimizes traction for every condition it encounters. It is engineered for optimal performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions, while also providing enhanced stability in dry conditions.

      It seems dual overhead cams are making a return to the Corvette in one application. A set of GM service documents made their way on to Reddit sometime this morning. In the documents, there is a 6.2L DOHC V8 with LT5 code. Furthermore, the engine application corresponds to the 2018 Corvette. There isn't any indication of forced-induction being used for this engine.
      LT5 holds a special place in Corvette history. This was the code used for the only Corvette to ever feature a DOHC V8, the C4 ZR-1. 
      What could this engine be used for? The Drive believes this engine could be used for the mid-engine Corvette since it is a break from the traditional. We're wondering if there could be track-special Corvette that could use this engine.
