[source: Motor Authority] GM ties with Saab will remain in future models The future of Saab is starting to look much brighter, thanks in part to important concessions from General Motors to help it build and design its own range of cars in the future, as well as a likely extension from Swedish courts for its restructuring deadline. For a while it looked as though Saab may go the same way as Pontiac, but its chief engineer is confident the brand will be able to survive without GM. The GM concession being referred to is the investment in the Saab brand over the past few years, which has led to the company today having the best equipment, tools and enginee…

Ok sure, the SUV may just be a TrailBlazer underneath, and it may be alienating to loyalists...but c'mon...it looks friggin' cool. I like Saabs recent "Born from Jets" ad campaign, the music, and narrator go well. This just happens to rock cuz the jet transforms into the SUV. I'm sure we've all seen it, but here it is for anyone besides me who really liked it http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=83...aab+9-3&pl=true

It seems there is a real business reason for Koenigsegg's puch to buy SAAB and seek those European Investment Bank loans that will fund research in the areas related to improving efficiency and emissions. Link to AutoblogGreen post.

i had seen some pics and thought the new redesigned 2006 looked better and caught my eye more then the older 9-5. now i am not gonna lie, i am not a saab loyalist...i have never owned one and just as recently as the new 9-3 even became interested. maybe this is why Saab did what they did,--to bring in more then just the loyalists. anyway, on to the drive. upon approach the car is very low to the ground. the front end is very long and "beak-ish" if you will. the wheels look good but imo, need to be 18's. i beleive the 9-3 has 18s and the 9-5 is a bigger car and has a lot of gap to fill. the Pirreli tires are nice, but replacemet will be expensive. the grill…

The ignition was in the floor. It had a rear hatchback, not a trunk. The hood was hinged at the front, so it opened away from the windshield. And many of its owners — including Jerry Seinfeld’s character on his long-running sitcom — were intensely loyal. Auto enthusiasts across the country were dismayed by the news Friday that General Motors was planning to shut down Saab, the Swedish carmaker it bought two decades ago, after a deal to sell it fell apart. Even with its modest and steadily declining sales, Saab long stood out as a powerful brand in spite of itself. “It wasn’t designed to be a fashion statement,” said Ron Pinelli, president of Autodata, which tracks ind…

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../339324355/1056 "After dissolving its relationship with Subaru that would have led to a Tribeca-based crossover, Saab went to work on one of its own. The result is the 9-4X BioPower concept. Not surprisingly, Saab also uses a green theme by equipping the concept with an E85-burning, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don't let the relatively small engine size deceive you because Saab employs its "rightsizing" techniques to extract 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the engine. Power is delivered to the wheels through Saab's all-wheel-drive system with electronic rear limited-slip differential that debuted on the 9-3. …

source: http://motoring.iafrica.com/carsinaction/shootout/477628.htm Sven meets the Huns By: Mario Lupini; Images: Ciaran Nunan Almost everyone knows that the horse-drawn carriage was the progenitor of the convertible automobile. In fact all cars at the turn of the 20th century were convertibles, but the death-knell of the convertible was dealt by the Dodge Brothers Victory 6 with its revolutionary all-steel monocoque body affixed to a normal ladder type chassis. The convertible has since become the playground for designers who have taken the shape to ever-exciting heights. In fact the convertible became the powder-puff segment of the car market. …

Saab Takes Pole Position in Environmental Class 7.9.07 Saab continues to enjoy great success with its environmentally-friendly BioPower model range. It is now clearly the leading supplier of bioethanol (E85) ‘flex-fuel’ cars in the Swedish, as well as to the European market. During the first five months of the year, Saab delivered some 6,800 9-3 and 9-5 BioPower models to Swedish customers. And the sales pace was maintained last month (June), when the Saab 9-3 BioPower, launched in early spring, came top of the Swedish sales charts, giving Saab a 38% market share in the segment for environmentally-friendly cars. “It is very satisfying that our customers appreciate ou…

Saab Plans World Tour With Russian Investor And Chinese Automaker William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 4, 2011 Saab is planning a global PR tour to introduce their new Russian Investor, Vladimir Antonov and Chinese Partner, Hawtai Motor Group. The plan has Saab's Chairman, Victor Muller traveling to auto shows and speaking to the press about the investment and partnership. It's similar to effort by Muller last year saying Saab is still here. "If and when Antonov gets involved, we want to include him. We want people to meet him and know who he is. Obviously we want to include our Chinese joint-venture partners as well in our tour," sai…

By Mike Harrison Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV today said it has submitted a renewed offer for General Motors Co.’s Saab unit. “An 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process” which will “remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction,” Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor R. Muller said in a statement. GM last week said it will shut the money-losing Saab unit after talks collapsed on a sale to Spyker, the second failure in less than a month to keep the 72-year-old Swedish brand alive. GM and Spyker decided there was “no point in carrying on” after …

Unstable atom Jun 18th 2009 From The Economist print edition Does the troubled Swedish firm have a future? AFPKoenigsegg attempts fusion THE fact that bankrupt General Motors appears to have flogged three of its unwanted brands—Saturn to a car dealer, Hummer to a Chinese maker of heavy-duty trucks and now Saab to a tiny sports car company—lends substance to the idea that there’s one born every minute. The buyers may not be paying much, but at a time when the car industry should be consolidating rather than atomising, they are taking on an awful lot of risk. Of the three, only the fate of Saab will be of any concern to car lovers: Saturns were sold to people who wer…

So we all know that a redesigned 9-5 and 9-3 are on their way until the end of the decade, and it seems some sort of crossover will be part of their lineup as well. What about models smaller than the 9-3? Personally, I'd like to see two models: a 9-2 based on a future Opel Astra and a 9-1 destined to be a MINI competitor. It seems both audi and Alfa ave approved models to go against the MINI and I'd like to see Saab do something in that 'subcompact premium models' (not sure if the terminology is correct).

Saab Plant May Get New Product STOCKHOLM -- General Motors' loss-making car brand Saab hopes to make a new compact model at its plant in Trollhattan, which last year lost a race to build the next generation of GM's mid-sized cars. The Swedish brand, which last year sold about 129,000 cars, mainly in Europe and North America, has run up hefty losses in recent years in a fiercely competitive market. Saab's Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson told Swedish news agency TT the new compact car would compete in the same segment as the BMW 3-series and Audi's A 3 and be made on a platform similar to that of the next generation of Opel Astra. Trollhattan last year lost the race f…

By Niklas Magnusson and Ola Kinnander Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Saab Automobile AB dealers in the U.S. are running out of new cars after the Swedish carmaker cut production to conserve cash and prepare for its first new model in seven years. “We have about 10 Saabs left, and they won’t last long,” said Ivan Goodwin, sales manager at Jim Ellis Saab in Atlanta. “It’s going to be a big problem, but there is nothing we can do about it.” Saab, which General Motors Co. is selling to an investor group led by Swedish sports-car maker Koenigsegg Automotive AB, has slowed assembly to retool its Swedish factory to build the new 9-5 sedan starting next year, spokesman Eric Geers sa…
