This story is posted by MSN in their auto forum from a U.S. News and World Report story on "Why Are Manual Transmission Disappearing?" Thought it was an interesting piece. I agree with some of what is said but also feel there is a lack of effort on why some might still want a manual or how they can keep the value by being an informed sales person. I will agree that the best anti-theft device is a manual transmission now. Seems the news has more and more stories about the craziness of people breaking in to steal an auto and when it is a manual they end up having to leave. http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/ownership/why-are-manual-transmissions-disappearing/ar-…

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) plan to build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant, the two said on Friday, as part of an alliance that will also see the Japanese automakers jointly develop electric vehicle technologies. The two will take small stakes in each other as part of the tie-up: Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker by vehicle sales last year, will take a 5 percent share of Mazda, extending its dominance in Japan's auto sector. Mazda will take a 0.25 percent share of its larger rival. The plant, something of a surprise at a time of overcapacity in the U.S. market, will be a boost to U.S. President Donald Trump, who campaign…

In reading the write up at electrek, this got me to thinking about the current state of Li-ion batteries where China controls the world Li-ion supply by owning 75%. As such all major battery production companies produce a heavy amount of their batteries in China and ship across the world. The current 46th administration of the US has committed $400 billion to buying / using US made batteries in a wide range of products, auto's military, etc. and part of this is to spur investment by US tech startups to drive forward aggressively in moving into solid state battery packs that use various minerals that are not controlled by China. To quote the story at the li…

NADA Guides Releases Their “Hardest to Find” list William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 10, 2011 NADA Guides just put out their list of the “Hardest to Find” vehicles. NADA did a analysis of dealer inventories and sales data to help them compile their list. They also avoided low production models since their short supply is due to exclusivity. The list of vehicles that are in short supply are the Ford Explorer, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Sorento and Toyota Prius. NADA says all of the vehicles had less than a 30 day inventory supply. Automakers consider anything with less than 50 day supply – an estimate of how lo…

GM Looking at New Ad Agencies for Chevrolet For a long time, politics and personal relationships have kept the Chevy/Campbell-Ewald relationship bound together as if by Crazy Glue; even when the advertising and thinking that produced it was terrible. The agency has been Chevy's agency since 1922. 1922!!!!!!! That was then. Chevy IS General Motors. It used to be that Chevy was just one of eight brands at GM in North America. Going forward, it is one of four. But in fact, it is the whole show. If Chevrolet does not increase market share and improve perception, it's not going to matter what happens at Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Discussion: Chevrolet hunting for a new…

GM Kills Zeta and future RWD plans, Camaro and G8 only Zetas to make it to US, Sigma to soldier on. Nothing like some bad news to be announced just when things are looking positive. On the heels of the Detroit Auto Show. GM has announced that Zeta is officially dead, and only the G8 and Camaro will see American shores. Bob Lutz stated that Sigma will have to solider on, blaming the cancellations and halted development on increasingly tough fuel economy standards. He even goes so far as to say traditional RWD companies may have to rethink which wheels power the car to meet fuel economy standards: “And I suspect the same thing is going to start to bite the tradition…

GM Sees First Monthly Sales Increase in 21 Months For the first time in 21 months, General Motors is on track to see its first monthly sales increase compared to the same time period a year ago, the company said today. While official results will be announced next week, all signs point to a good month, according to Mike DiGiovanni, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis. "We're really having a good October," he said. DiGiovanni added that about 95% of the sales for the month are coming from the company's four core U.S. brands — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The Volt: Still not a hybrid... no lie! This morning the automotive press’ inter-tubes went all a flutter over the revelation that the just released Chevrolet Volt has a clutch that can engage the gasoline engine to the generator which could itself be connected to the wheels when the vehicle is running over 70mph and the battery is depleted. This prompted cries of “GM LIED!” and “IT’S JUST A HYBRID!” due to the fact that since near the beginning, GM has been marketing the Volt as an electric vehicle with an onboard range extender and it had no physical connection from engine to wheels. That got me thinking: What exactly is the definition of a hybrid…

C&G Brief Review of NAIAS 2009 by NOS NOS2006 had the opportunity to go to this year's NAIAS, and shared with us some insight as to what the mood is like on the showroom floor: depressing. All of the excitement and glitz that usually accompanies Detroit was missing, and with the exception of Ford, the stands were bare and basic. NOS also shares with us his impression of the preproduction Camaro's interior, and his concern about the cheap, hard plastic that covers it. Hopefully the production versions will be better. *brochure from 1974 Cadillac with Air Restraint System. GM was the first to offer airbags* With all the negative press that has circulated about General Motors before and during its bankruptcy proceedings, customers should be aware that although financially troubled, GM is a recognized leader in car safety advances. The company pioneered the development of the now ubiquitous concrete barriers on national highways and was the first car maker to install rear turn signals as standard equipment. Under New Ownership! Avant1963 and I came to an agreement over the weekend where my company, Pittsburgh Living LLC, has purchased Cheers and Gears. Avant1963 will continue in an admin role for as long as he chooses. I have been a member of this site since 2003. In 2007 I was elevated to the admin group while helping out with a server move. Around the beginning of this year, Cheers and Gears was dying a slow, painful, death in the image of our favorite company. I decided to do some much needed maintenance and find ways to secure financing for server and software upgrades. Since that time I have filled the role of head admin previously held by FlyBrian and Josh befor…

REPORT: GM's RWD architecture will downsize and survive Autoblog is reporting that GM's superb RWD Zeta architecture may yet live on, however it will be downsized to increase efficiency. This is of course, great news for RWD fans, but it would also make sense to actually utilize one of the best platforms they have and spent millions of dollars to develope. Could GM actually do something so logical? We'll have to wait and see. http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?sh...c=29524&hl=

Buick News November 1, 2008~ Some news bits are trickling in about a couple of future tri-sheilds. Firstly, Autoblog has spilled some of the beans on the next-gen LaCrosse. Engine options will include a 290hp version of the Direct Injection 3.6L V6 and an all-new 3.0L DI V6 that should be good for 240hp and around 30mpg. Other options certain to make their way into the LaCrosse include HID headlamps, a heads-up display, rear view camera and all-wheel-drive. Secondly, GM appears to be putting the finishing touches on the Opel Insignia-based Buick Regal. Thoigh it's not slated to come to the US, the Regal certainly does look the part of the LaCrosse's half-brother, and…

The Spark That Didn't in Detroit Apparently there was a bit of confusion at this year's NAIAS regarding the Chevy Spark. Despite releasing official photos of the car while the auto show was takimng place, it seems the actual vehicle GM had on display was the Beat. GM admits that they were planning to show the actual Spark in Geneva, and as it turns out the car on display at Detroit was the Beat concept. Seems like a good way to confuse a lot of people. G8 ST Winner Gets Torrent GXP Instead Joseph Warren, the winner of the naming contest, was originally going to get a new G8 ST as his prize for choosing the right name for the Sport Truck. Unfortuneately for him, GM decided to kill the ST, so this left him with a problem. GM told him he could choose any other Pontiac so long as the price was equal or less. What did he choose? a Torrent GXP. Yeah, I don't get it either. Follow the jump to see the full article. http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?showtopic=27758

Cheers and Gears Quick Drive Saturn Astra 5-Door Member WhiteKnight does a Quick Drive of the Saturn Astra 5-Door. After our dealer told us there was yet another overnight wait in store for the Aura as the on-board computer had started to sour, they gave us a switchblade-style key that went to a dark blue hatchback, none other than an Astra five-door, the most ungainly member, in my opinion, of the Astra line-up. C4C filing time extended, again Dealers unable to process requests; Tuesday set as new deadline Bimmer325 | Tuesday @ 01:56 AM One more lap to go. Thousands of dealers complained of trouble filing clunker requests Monday, with the finish line looming just hours away. As a result, the Obama administration has extended the deadline for dealers to process transactions to noon Tuesday. It's too late for any deals, though, as sales under the incentive winded down Monday at 8 PM. Why the paperwork trouble? Increased traffic as last-minute shoppers rushed to cash in caused the government website to crash Monday afternoon. As dealers rushed to submit vouchers on t…
