The only honest advice I can give you is:

get an old gen saab 9-3 (all og 9-3's were turbo'd)

or a new gen 900 turbo

you can find them for prety cheap (for example, I saw a 1999 saab 9-3 with all options, had only 190 000km's (roughly 120 000 miles) and was being offered for 4999$ canadian dollars!!)

you can get a '95-'98 saab 900 turbo for anywere from 1 grand to 10 grand...... thers allot of deals on them out there and they are very reliable. I know first hand and if you check MSN autos reviews, they all get either 4 out of 5 or 5 out of 5 depending on what year for reliability...

my suggestions, find one that is turbo'd, not tomany miles and with not all the options that way you'll have less chance at electrical issues in the future

g-luck!

thank you though.....

no turbos sir bad for insurance esp stock cuz my insurance looks up the VIN and charges insurance for a turbo vehicle no matter if i remove it or not

im actually considering the corolla if i cna find one cuz its a not bad looking vehcle and my dad likes it

the fact that mine is a turbo makes a 50$ difference on my insurance per month...... not as much as what I was expecting.....

my dad priced out some quotes:

-1995 chev lumina: 390$ a month -PLPD

-2004 chev aveo : 410$ a month -PLPD

-2002 Saab 9-3: 550$ a month -Full coverage

but that is in ontario, canada and also, I'm on "facility insurance" wich is insurance for people who have a hard time getting afordable insurance due to a tainted driving record....

yah well that 50 dollars a month out of my pocket is a bit for me

the difference is that my insurance is

1300 for the corolla for six months

1600 for the saab

1400 for most of the others a few even higher

its weak but for me thats not too bad and i like the size for it

not many options

and im paying my owninsurance so its pretty high to have that big a difference per month

Subarus are cooler than most of the otehr cars you mentioned IMHO

They have boxer engines and send most of thier power to the rear wheels, therefore I think they're noit bad. :)

P.S. alsmo it's easy to find a 5-speed

Saturn S-series, if you can find one that hasn't been run into the ground. They're cheap & easy to work on, cheap to buy (I got my '99 for just over $5K over a year ago, and there are better deals than that out there), and if they haven't been run into the ground, are generally very reliable.

well the mazda im worried about cost of the vehicle more than anything

im actually considering a sub but as a sedan not a wagon, its harder on insurance but its only by 5 $ a yr

then again the corolla is somethin my dad would like and its great on insurance and its a good size.....damn hate these cars

id rather jsut get an I4 taurus sedan and swap the 4.0 V6

and i saw the saturns but im soory i cant stand saturns or volvos, jsut not my type of vehicle and i cant stand the backwards saaab engines

Why don't you ask your insurance agent for some suggestions? That's how I wound up with my Delta. If you go with something that is at least 10-15 years old your insurance is be much cheaper than if you bought something newer.

actually my insurance takes into account safety, cars from 15 yrs ago didnt all have the safety equipment they do now and it raises up insurance lol great

Wow, Mute... if those were my choices for a car, I'd have to kill myself. Ugh... wagons. But if you must, go for a Subaru. Not a Forester, but an Impreza/Outback Sport. They're nice (although, I prefer the coupes) and you can't go wrong with 'em. Get that... or kill yourself. Which you would you rather pick? :D

the only taurus you'd catch me driving is the SHO.....

And the saab only has a backward engine if you choose a c900 (classic 900, as opposed to the NG900 made from '94 to '98)

the later has its engine placed the same way any corola, camry, cavalier or Taurus has its engine placed. It's also in the same price range, more reliable than most (and you mentioned that of your insurer) and is also available in non-turbo form with a 2.3L I4 with 150 HP and hatchback to fit all the extra family lugage.....

but dont let me convince you, shop for one in your price range and test drive a non turbo.

or whatever else you are interested in......

how about a mazda protege?

I don't know what years you are looking at exactly, but if you're interested and wanna go back a bit, the E30 3ers are great cars. You can find a late 80's 325 for pretty cheap. If you find one that has been taken care of they are pretty reliable as well. They're also pretty fun cars to drive. Don't know what insurance runs on them...can't be much. But yea, just a suggestion.

EDIT: read your post mroe closely...looks like you're looking for a larger car and a smaller engine, so nevermind. :P

my 01 alero only costs 1200 a year to insure, not bad and that is with a v6. In its last years of production it was regularly listed as one of the 10 cheapest cars in the US to insure. Good reliablitiy handes well good power fairly stylish one of the best interiors of a domesticin its generation...whats notto like?

Very true. I am considering one after the wagon goes...

A few of my friends have them-

one has a 93 Sc1 with well over 250k on it...and still going...
