Industry News: Fisker Issues Recall On Karmas For Fire Risk

Over the weekend, Fisker announced a recall of over 2,000 of its Karma plug-in hybrid sedans due to risk of fires. The recall was issued a couple weeks after a fire engulfed the driver's front side of a Karma sitting a parking lot.

Fisker called on the help of Pacific Rim Investigative Services Group to figure out the cause of the fire on August 10. The investigation found the ignition source was a low temperature cooling fan, which “had an internal fault that cause it to fail, overheat and start a slow burning fire.”

To keep this from happening again, dealers will replace the cooling fan with an updated one. Also, dealers will add an extra fuse to the system for protection.

This is the second fire that has claimed a Karma and the third recall since December. The first recall dealt with a coolant leak for 240 Karmas. Then, 600 Karmas were recalled due to a battery defect.

Ban this junk, good grief.

I would not call it junk, but I think it is far more experimental than they are willing to admit.

Better yet is if they would sell their 300 Mile range battery technology to GM or Ford so it could go into mass production that everyone can have access too.

If they want people to move off Petrol and onto something else, then they got to get it to the masses, not the 1%.

You're honestly putting them in with GM and Toyota? These playboy amateurs? Any problem with these kit cars is amplified because of who they are, OF COURSE they need to react quicker... plus there is a miniscule number of these things in the hands of fools customers, there is very little investigating needed to see if there is real trouble. No large sample to pull info from before considering a recall.

Was at PSE (Puget Sound Energy) today in Bellevue where they had an alternative energy show for businesses, governments and individuals. Handed out lots of business cards.

Saw this car finally in person and was able to sit in it and check it out. First, they built it for small people in comparison to me. Had to recline to actually sit in it and no way anyone could sit behind me. Fit and Finish was amazing but then for a hand built car of little production I would expect it to be.

Funny part was someone else asked about the fires and the rep said it was nothing, just a little fix in a fan and then he changed it to other topics and focused on the long range it gets compared to other electric cars.

Still the price is a limiting factor for most people and a useless car for businesses.

It is an unusually packaged car. The Atlantic is much more conventional, though you may still not for as it has an interior just slightly larger than a 3-series.

Karma Automotive is preparing to release the 2020 refresh of the Revaro.  The current car uses GM's 2.0 liter 4-cylinder as a regenerator to charge the 21.4 kWh battery while underway. The battery then powers a pair of electric motors in the rear that produce a combined 403 horsepower letting the Revero dart to 60 in just 5.4 seconds. Range in full EV mode is about 37 miles, so says the EPA.
In a press release, Karma has announced that the the refreshed Revero will now move to a 1.5 liter BMW 3-cylinder to support a new, more powerful NMC lithium-ion battery pack.  The rear drive unit is being replaced as well with a new twin-motor rear drive module.  In the 2020 car, naught to 60 will drop by nearly a full second to 4.5 seconds.
The refreshed Revero will sport updated body work to go along with its technological upgrades.
Karma will be unveiling the 2020 Revero at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 16th along with two other concepts.

Herick Fisker is back again after his original company succumbed to bankruptcy in 2014.  Now as Fisker, Inc., the latest vehicle he is showing is an electric crossover concept.  While we have a picture, the technical details are light.
The EV will be priced near $40,000 and have a 300 mile range.  Powered by an 80 kWh enhanced lithium-ion battery, there will be rear-motor rear wheel drive and optional dual motor all wheel drive available.
Fisker is planning on the not-yet-named SUV in late 2021, just about a year after the Tesla Model Y is due to hit the market.  Fisker is planning on a Telsa-Like online only sales model with "nationwide concierge service".

The EPA has announced that FCA will be issuing a voluntary recall of 862,520 gasoline vehicles in the United States that do not meet emissions standards. The vehicles covered are the 2011-2016 Dodge Journey, 2011-2014 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger, 2011-2016 Jeep Patriot and Compass (with CVT and FWD), and 2011-2012 Dodge Caliber.
Due to the scope of the recall, the fixes will be issued in stages starting with the oldest vehicles. The fix involves replacing the catalytic converter. FCA has stated there are no safety concerns and no fines will be issued by the EPA.
The issue was discovered during routing in-use emissions testing by FCA and subsequently reported to the EPA.
FCA just settled a claim by the EPA that FCA used a cheat device in its diesel trucks and SUVS.
