Ford Small Car Sales Reach Decade High; Escape has Best-Ever September; Ford F-Series Hit Best September in 5 Years

  • Ford small car sales totaled 24,628 vehicles in September – the company’s best U.S. small car sales since 2002 and a 73 percent increase year-over-year
  • Escape compact utility sales increased 14 percent for the month; 23,148 Escape sales mark best-ever September sales
  • F-Series produces its 14th consecutive year-over-year sales increase in September, reaching its best September since 2007; total sales were 55,077 pickups – a 1 percent increase
  • Ford Motor Company U.S. sales total 174,976 vehicles in September, unchanged from a year ago; retail sales up 4 percent compared to last year

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 2, 2012 – Ford delivered U.S. sales gains across its vehicle portfolio in September, with cars up 2 percent, utilities up 9 percent, and F-Series trucks up 1 percent.

“As more buyers look for new vehicles across the country, Ford is ready with our strongest lineup ever of fuel-efficient cars, utilities and full-size pickups,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Fuel economy remains one of the most important features customers want most today, and Ford is answering the call with five vehicles that deliver 40 mpg or better – with another three on the way by year-end.”

Ford sales of Focus, C-MAX and Fiesta totaled 24,628 vehicles in September, representing Ford’s best September for small car sales in 10 years. Focus sales were up 91 percent, while the all-new C-MAX began sales last month.

Escape had its best-ever September sales, with 23,148 vehicles sold, representing a 14 percent increase versus last year’s record sales. Escape is on pace to surpass last year’s record sales of 254,293 vehicles for the full year.

Ford F-Series, America’s best-selling vehicle, sold a total of 55,077 pickups during September truck month – a 1 percent increase compared to last year – providing its 14th straight month of sales increases.

September U.S. total sales at Ford Motor Company were unchanged from last year and up 4 percent for retail sales. Total car sales are up 2 percent, total utilities up 9 percent, and total trucks down 8 percent – with stronger F-Series, E-Series and Transit Connect sales being offset by the discontinuation of Ranger.

So why is this in direct contrast to what the media is publishing on how GM and Chrysler had great month of gains and low incentives and Ford has spent crazy on incentives but flat sales in comparison to last year.

The Ford Ranger's discontinuation skews the narrative a bit. The real concern is Lincoln. The numbers for Lincoln are pretty bad if you think about it, especially since Cadillac outsells Lincoln two to one. Lincoln is looking more like Mercury before Merc was terminated here. Again, why should anyone buy a Lincoln?

Exactly, why buy a Lincoln when everyone else offers far better products in the same categories.

Glad to see Ford small cars selling well, one more nail in the coffin for Toyota, methinks...

Ford is actually down a whisker or flat compared to previous year. In some ways flatness of both GM and Ford sales for the month are bothersome considering the industry has seen some good growth.

And again, Lincoln is pretty much a dead brand walking....

Agreed...they have good product, but the real growth seems to be in Hyundai and Honda....troublesome.

Marketing, this boils down to marketing and the current message does not appeal to people. They are not showing how their product is needed for peoples life style and how it enhances their life style. This lack of good marketing means most tend to ignor the company.

Agree...and now that GM has the product....they fail to market...just like Ford...brilliant...

Mother’s Day weekend was a busy one. The kids had planned out the whole Sunday for the wife and I had planned the day before to build an area with a raised garden bed for the wife. The raised bed material was bought, the area mapped out and the plan to get up early and rent a truck to pick up cedar chips and black gold compost soil was scheduled.
Saturday morning went as I expected, up early, quick breakfast and off to be the first in line at the U-Haul rental place. Figured rather than $75 per delivery, two types of material meant $150, why not spend $19.95 for a single day rental of the truck, pick up the material myself and pocket $130 or so.
U-Haul actually has it to mileage and other fees that made the single days truck rental $55 and change, so not as big as I expected but still roughly a $95 savings.

Surprise was that the truck I got was a new 2019 F150 with V8 that only had 300 miles on the odometer. Having not been in a new Ford pickup in the last couple years, I was excited to see how it drove, what the fit n finish was like and over all materials.
U-Haul trucks are your base trucks with rubberized floors, dash is all hard plastics yet they still had backup camera and the V8 engine. As such the truck had no problem even loaded down with dirt or the cedar chips moving. Over all ride was decent and I actually really loved the seats as they were very supportive to my large size and yet comfy driving from freeway to local roads, never tiring to the body. Radio was a basic am/fm with a base pair of stereo speakers. Decent and functional.

Dash being a base truck was hard plastic, as we have seen in many videos about even top of the line Luxury auto’s, the dash did make a big amount of squeak noise. Screen size of the radio system was also very small. Yet as many folks have used the term, the truck was functional.

Fit n Finish was very tight, did not find any large panel gapes or errors in the paint job or exterior body.  I did find the very simple tie down points with already rusting bolts to be a bit surprising but it still worked and the truck had a bed so I did not have to worry about messing the truck bed up. Interesting observation is that when the truck is locked, so is the tailgate, so with a load, I had to always keep the truck unlocked so the tailgate would open and let me unload my chips and soil.
The V8 engine was very smooth and quiet and the only drawback was the weird auto stop / start. If you’re in normal traffic it works just as GMs systems have worked with turning off and on the engine. Yet sit in one place too long and then release the brake pedal and you get a message on the center dash screen saying you have been stationary too long and must put the transmission in park and then back to drive before engine will start back up. Even with following their directions, it seemed the engine did not want to start back up forcing me to put it into park and then manually starting the truck again.

Other than that single issue, the truck worked and the backup camera was nice to have to get as close as possible to the wife’s new raised veggie garden.

Hit me up with any questions you have about the truck or my project. Yes I did take out the grass the weekend before so my cedar chips are 3-4 inches deep.

Ford said that it would be cutting a shift from its Essex Engine Plant in Ontario starting in October.  Ford says the move will "better align with consumer demand".  The likely cause? Ford F-150 buyers are shifting more of their purchases away from the 5.0 liter V8.
F-150 buyers have a choice of 5 engines when selecting a truck, the 2.7-liter Ecoboost, the 3.3-liter V6, the 3.5-liter Ecoboost, and now a 3.0-liter PowerStroke Diesel, all in addition to the 5.0-liter V8, and the customer mix appears to be skewing towards the smaller displacement engines.
The cut in shifts will not result in job cuts as those workers will be transitioned to another engine plant to build the 7.3-liter engine due to be installed in the 2020 Ford Super Duties. That transition will happen in November of this year.

Porsche Reports April U.S. Retail Sales

First four months up 2.7 percent ahead of new Macan, 911, electric TaycanAtlanta, Georgia. Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of the Porsche 911, 718 Boxster and Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan model lines, today announced April retail sales of 5,018 vehicles. The total was an increase of 5.0 percent from March but down 9.9 percent from a record April 2018. The primary reason for the year-over-year decline was the transition to the new Macan, the best-selling Porsche model that is due in U.S. dealerships this month.

U.S. retail sales in the first four months were 2.7 percent ahead of the same period in 2018, which itself was the seventh record retail year in a row for PCNA.

“We are already feeling the excitement for the refreshed Macan and later this year for the eighth generation of the iconic Porsche 911,” said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of PCNA. “In September we will unveil the first all-electric Porsche, the Taycan, so all in all we have a thrilling year to look forward to along with our 191 U.S. dealer partners.”

April results were driven by strong demand for the new Cayenne, with a notable 86.1 percent increase compared to April 2018. The mid-engine 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman together were up 1.3 percent from a year ago.

Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales in the U.S. totaled 1,975
vehicles in April, up 9.4 percent year-over-year.
