Yup.

And Canada is on the precipice of actually de-coupling from the US and the Big 2 and a half.

Which will spell danger on the behalf of MORE Americans.

Canada will try to broker deals with other car makers if China does not want to come here to BUILD cars and only sell them.  Other countries WANT to make trade deals with Canada.   The hurt will be at a minimum as much as it can. 120 plus years of US/Canada car building there.  But it is Americans that have DECIDED on this way forward.

Canada is just about to decide on what will happen to Chinese EVs and the tariffs Canada has on them.

China will then lift the canola oil tariffs and then new trade talks will begin starting a whole other trade war between the US and the world...

Its all related...

The gun safety stuff?

Well...that is not politics.

There is nothing to do. Listen to Richard Wolf, the collapse is inevitable at this point. America is incapable of governing itself, and thus the economic collapse will keep America from causing negative consequences around the world.

Given the Belt and Road initiative and other positive things on the BRICKS side, a Chinese century is preferable to an American century at this point.

The 21st century should be the Chinese century, and Canada is doing the rational thing getting rid of tariffs on Chinese EV's as the domestic automakers are destined to fail and disappear. Better Canadians don't own vehicles that are obsolete that they can't get parts for.

Talking politics non-stop on an auto enthusiast site is like talking autos non-stop on a political enthusiast site.

There is a really good book by Len Deighton called Violent Ward, where LA goes completely to ship (t) and things fall apart. Was a good read a couple of decades ago when I read it.

Twenty years ago, this forum was well populated and relevant. Now its a pathetic shadow of its former self. Being here is like watching the final collapse of LA in that novel. I feel bad for Drew, who owns the site and is a good guy.

But the site mirrors the domestic auto industry and the country that holds that domestic auto industry, all three are going to collapse into irrelevancy.

We need a book with Olds on a Horse with Windmills. Don Quixote was another good read, but it takes an 8th grade literacy level which most Americans seem to actually lack. I work in a university and a surprising number of incoming Freshmen are almost functionally illiterate.

Would love to live in a world where cars like a 70 442 were still relevant, or where we had interesting, profitable American EV's. I do like the lightening and a few of the hummers.

But in this world, the 442 is following other American muscle cars, the American auto industry, the country, and this site into oblivion.

You need to talk about how cool Montreal is, or something. Archie Bunker back in the 1970s led a miserable existence because he realized how much better everyone else's life was. @A Horse With No Name Just think of a Modern 442 but in EV format.

The Oldsmobile 442 stands for a combination of features that define its performance:

  • 4: Represents the four-barrel carburetor.
  • 4: Stands for the four-speed manual transmission.
  • 2: Indicates the dual exhaust system.

442 Performance EV

  • 4: 4,000 HP
  • 4: 4 motors, 1,000hp each
  • 2: 2 door Luxury Performance

Kinda how I can see this from Genesis:

Sexy as hell and needs to be produced as this would excite people to own a car!!! imho

OK...the first post that Ill make to turn it around.

Montreal has allocated I dont know how many more billions to fix the Olympic Stadium's roof once again.  It is cheaper to spend billions than to tear it down. And at this point, the Olympic Stadium, for better or worse, symbolises Montreal. The architecture that is both beautiful and unique but arrogant and self serving and corrupt.   This stadium is part of Montreal's fabric whether we as Montrealers like it or not. So might as well embrace it. Love it and live with it. Show case it the way we showcase other Montreal beauty.

It is the start of the renovation project. Beautiful photography. Enjoy.

Urban hiking in Montreal is awesome. Lots of locals bitch about our bike paths. And to a certain degree, they would be correct as bike paths have taken over. And as an automobilist in Montreal...yeah.

BUT...what most automobilists in Montreal have failed to realize that the people, the young families that CHOSE to  ACTUALLY LIVE in the city centers ENJOY those bike paths. The safety and the ease of biking anywheres in the city centers with their KIDS enjoying the OUTDOORS.  Montreal was ALWAYS a walkable city until the cars invaded. The walkable and bike-able paths fought back to re-acquire what was rightfully theirs before the automobile made its appearance.

And this is not even on the mountain. The mountain has its own natural preserved beauty.  This is in Anjou. A  burrough to the north east of the island.

Auto folks need to realize that not everyone wants an auto and would rather live in the city and use bike paths to get around and let their kids play. To achieve that, Cities are going to have to invest in safe private bike / pedestrian roads.

IMHO, the day of Bikes using the same road as autos has long been over.

I could see one of those going bankrupt and gone within the decade without any other company picking them up.

Probably Ford.  At least GM has EV development on par to the best of the best in the world, which now would be from China.  I read somewheres that GM has 800V platform ready to go in China but will not release that here in North America for various reasons.  But in the long term of things concerning the global temperature around the US and how it conducts itself on the world stage, and from within, I dont think that an 800V platform will protect GM from the inevitable downfall that is to come BECAUSE of what is happening.

Ford started this stackable EV platform network thing just a tad too late.  I dont think Ford makes the cut.  The F-150 has gotten to be too expensive for an average Joe to buy that if and when the US economy collapses, F-150 sales will mean jack shyte. Its only in North America where full sized pick-ups mean a damned thing.   I dont think when the US economy has tanked that full sized pick up truck sales will be all that important to any OEM.

Lets say Canada drops its Chinese EV tariffs and China floods the Canadian market and Canadians just outright gorges on Chinese EVs, the sales from Canada that GM and Ford make will be DEVASTATING to Detroit.  Ouur GM and Ford factories will close for sure.  But...the SUPPLY chains will also falter for GM and Ford from Canada...

Maybe Canada brokers a deal for Chinese OEMs to take over former GM and Ford factories?

Maybe Chinese OEMs construct new ones?

Maybe China says no to that. Canada could also go to Stellantis and Mercedes/BMW/VAG and possiby Peugeot/Renault?

Mexico and Canada do not have tariffs on cars being built in Canada or Mexico...

This is a mess ANYWAY you slices it.

Canadian companies seem happy to have the U.S. government buy up their stock; seems the auto industry will have access to North American rare earth minerals replacing China 100%.

I can so see this happening as pissing off Canadians could easily make the government say NO to U.S. ownership of these companies.

But having to find 26 x 1 1/2 tires for an older bike my wife rides. Most of what is available is as you say cheap Chinese crap.

I’m sure most is garbage but I’m sure Michelin, Continental, and Maxxis all make a tire in that size.

I bought Continentals for my mountain bike a couple years ago and freakin love them. Some are made in China and some are made in Germany.

2 mines.  Both ventures are about mining these rare earth metals on US territory. One in Nevada and the other in Alaska.   It is more of a threat on the way the US is treating Canada like an enemy for an ENEMY Canadian company of the US to mine US rare earth metals which will be owned by ENEMY Canadian ownership. THIS way, the US government is SLEEPING with the enemy in having a small but somewhat of a control in 5% and 10% stake.

One is a 5% stake

https://globalnews.ca/news/11467110/trump-alaska-mining-road-critical-minerals-trilogy-metals/

The U.S. government said last week it is taking a minority stake in Lithium Americas, another Canadian company that is developing one of the world’s largest lithium mines in Nevada. The Department of Energy will take a 5% equity stake in the company and a 5% stake in the Thacker Pass lithium mining project, a joint venture with General Motors.

and the other is 10% stake.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/article/us-government-to-take-10-stake-in-canadian-mining-company-trilogy-metals/

Vancouver-based Trilogy Metals Inc. says the U.S. government will take a 10-per-cent stake in the mineral exploration company, which has mining interests in Alaska that Washington wants to see developed.

This is actually more of an economical harm and an eventual capitulation.

It would be quite foolish to do a Canada/US fight with hockey.

1.  Although there are more American teams in the NHL, always has been, the American population is greater than Canadian. 10 times more greater, the NHL STILL is predominantly  Canadian born players.  Approx 42% in 2025 versus the approx 30% of American players.

2. The best of the NHL players ARE Canadian.  While other nations may have a prolific player here and there, like an Ovechkin, Russian, who happens to be the GOAT in goal scoring as of last year, or a Lane Hutson, a rookie American defenseman playing for Montreal who is poised to be one of the best defenseman in the NHL in his time eventually,  consistently the best players ARE from Canada.

While the Stanley Cup will probably be awarded to an American team again this year, the best player, the Captain of the team and the coaches are probably going to be ALL Canadian not to mention that the make-up of the team WILL  be  Canadian majority by a % of at LEAST 50%.  The rest of the team will be a hodge podge of other nations. A couple of Nordic Europeans, a couple of Russians and a couple of Americans.

Baseball...baseball is a sport to make fun of Canada with.

Basketball too.  Although there are quite a few Canadians that are shining in the NBA.  Talk is that Montreal is in the talks of getting a NBA team.   It helped that 2 prominent players on opposing teams in the finals were from Montreal.

Make fun of Montreal and/or Canada that we cant support any other sport other than hockey. Its fair.  Make fun of Toronto ALL you want.  I will probably join you.

But to try to get my goat on hockey will never work...

PS.  Jim Montgomery is from Montreal.  He went to my high school.  Or I went to his as he is a couple of years older than I.  I probably saw him in the hallways, but I do not remember him.   I played on the high school hockey team. He did not. He probably wasnt interested as he played for city leagues. I did not.

Idiot47 wanted Washington State to just open up all land and harvest and even the lumber industry here called him a moron for not properly managing the land and the trees as to when they can be properly harvested, replanted, etc.

Idiot47 is clueless about how the global economy works and can only look at how he can get money, mostly illegal.

Well...yeah about the forestry.   Plus Canada has forests that have been untouched since the dawn of time and trees that have been left to grow for hundreds if not thousands of years, the wood is as strong as Paul Bunyan himself...

THIS is a VERY big reason why CANADIAN lumber is sooooooo coveted by American and Canadian wood builders.

Couple that with the fact that these forests could swallow SEVERAL US States in them...

Also add to the fact that Canadians deforest with the LOWEST rates of any other country in the world AND our logging is as  efficient as it could be making Canadian lumber as cheap as it could be benefitting YOU dumb Americans the MOST without tariffs...

Sure American lumber companies dont benefit...but simply put, US lumbar companies do not have the phoquing resources...ie the phoquing trees, to phoquing compete.  But I guess...uneducated and misinformed moronic Americans will always fall for snake oil salesmen ignoring the fact that ALL phoquing Americans BENEFIT from CHEAP PHOQUING CANADIAN LUMBER!!!

At least Katy Perry understands the benefits of Canadian wood!!!

Let's correct one thing, not all Americans are Dumb, Canadian lumber industry has benefited heavily from the tie ups with Washington State Lumber companies as management of the land, replanting and harvesting over decades to make things sustainable was shared to help sister / brother lumber companies north of the boarder be more efficient and profitable. Learning from mistakes of the past in America has allowed Canadians to move forward with greater efficiency.

Just as we have learned much about mining better ways from Canadians who mined in permafrost and ground that is far harder to mine than in areas to the south. There is a reason why Canadian Mining companies are developing mines in the U.S.

We all agree that MAGA is the Biggest Idiots of the U.S. and led by a racist hate filled Idiot47. But this does not make all Americans Dumb Phoquing Idiots to use your terminology.

Hmmmm... questionable.

Yes. Of course. What have I been saying all this phoquing time???!!!

That American and Canadian economies have been intertwined for as long as it HAS been. Since the US became a country. Since 1812. Since even BEFORE when North American indigenous people actually owned the lands and did trading with themselves.
Why do you think I mentioned the Edmund Fitzgerald with the CSL Niagara and Tadousac???  Do I have to SPELL it out for you???!!!   And COUNTLESS of OTHER little facts here and there.  When I say that CANADIAN IRON ORE was shipped to Detroit for DIRT CHEAP and Detroit built cars for the US and Canada with factories in the US AND Canada...  Same thing with the trees.
