VW News: Call Me Arteon, The Successor To the Volkswagen CC

The Volkswagen CC is getting a bit long in the tooth and will be soon phased out. But there is a successor to the CC in the pipeline known as the Arteon which the German automaker has begun to start teasing.

 

Shown off in a pencil sketch, the Arteon looks very similar to the Sport Coupe Concept GTE shown at last year's Geneva Motor Show - a long front end, stubby rear end, and a coupe-like roofline. Volkswagen says the Arteon will feature a grille that extends into the LED headlights, and frameless windows.

As for the name, Volkswagen says Arteon is a combination of 'Art' and 'Eon'.

We'll see the production version next March at the Geneva Motor Show with sales following in the summer.

Wolfsburg, 28.11.2016 – Three months ahead of its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is providing a first look at the fascinating contours of its new premium saloon, the Arteon. The totally new model sits above the Passat and emphasises emotion in the upper mid-class.

In addition to a new and emotive outline Volkswagen is also introducing with the Arteon a highly expressive, horizontally accentuated brand look. The bars of the radiator grille extend into the three-dimensional headlights, while LED lighting elements additionally emphasise the striking layout and demonstrate dominance.

The four-door saloon impresses both through revolutionary design and great practicality. While the doors' frameless windows reflect the typical stylistic elements of a grand tourer, the top-hinged and wide-opening tailgate provides optimum access to the huge boot. Tobias Sühlmann, Exterior Designer, explains: “At first sight, the Arteon arouses enthusiasm through its expressive design. It then surprises through its practical virtues. This combination is unique."

The name Arteon – with the emphasis put on the first syllable – is made up of two component parts: 'Art' describes the saloon's harmonious lines and emotionality. The ending 'eon' identifies it, in the same way as Volkswagen's top model for the Chinese market, the PHIDEON, as a premium model.

The new Arteon is being publicly unveiled for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show; its launch will then follow in summer 2017.

Cars like this- stylish, exciting, modern- are essential for VW's relevance in today's marketplace, as well as making a positive impression moving forward from Dieselgate. They HAVE to get this car right. If not, don't even bother.

Failure!, Coupe design is so over done. VW has a history of doing a jelly bean generic blend that does not stand out. At this point, they are hurting so bad due to the diesel scandal that they could use a hit with a truly fresh and stand out design.

Time to bring back some original sedan designs that are a break from the coupe design.

I want stylish cars to continue...if 4 door coupes is what it takes then HOORAY!!!

I dont know what all this means, with all that bricks and walls coming down, but I really dont want to go back to the 1980s automotive styling....sure there were some nice cars around, most were FUGLY. I AM FULLY GRATEFUL WITH 4 DOOR COUPES ROAMING AROUND!!!

Me and you...we are similar in thoughts....its scary.

I was watching a CNN special(s) the other day on the 70s and 80s...

5 or 6 one hour long episodes on each decade....half way through one of those was interrupted to mention Castro's passing...anyway...

I was disgusted by him from those episodes...Rest in Peace Mr. Regan non the less...when I heard the documentary kept stressing the fact that HE KEPT STRESSING that the USSR is EVIL...

OK...back then I hated the USSR...but I was naive...but I was also a teenager...

Imagine how regular average Dimitri (Joe) Russians thought of us and our shytty ways everytime Regan called them evil...

Irony...visions of Donald Trump insulting tirades IMMEDIATELY came to my mind...

So yeah...I share your thoughts on that...

Oh...I just realized de-regulation that he made opened up the door for Wallstreet greed that is stll alive and well today...

OK...I dont know if de-regulation was the way to go to get America out of that economic rut, it did work, but a WORSE can of worms opened up...

Regarding car styling...

The expensive cars, the so-called luxury stuff...well...other than Aston Martin and the odd M-B CLS 4DOOR COUPE  and BMW M6 Grand Coupe, no modern car tugs at my passions.

I actually prefer the mainstream stylings of cars today rather than the expensive cars...BMW, M-B, Audi, Lexus, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Porsche (Panamera), Bugatti...all blah!!!

Agree so much with everything here.  Diverting to non political before we get banned or worse.

Only Luxury cars I could see actually dropping coin for would be a F type jag if I had a ton of $, an IS series Lexus or a TSX/TLX series Acura.

Acura not so much that I am a huge fan, but I find it less offensive in its appearance than the accord, which also brings out the "burn it with fire so I do not have to look at it" sentiment. It strikes me as a perfect car to blend in with the rest of humanity and go un-noticed in....with a decent stereo....

Lexus I kind of like more from a pragmatic viewpoint based on comfort or reliability.

Jag would have to be a third or forth car, would not trust it from a reliability standpoint.  Scratch perhaps even the desire to own an F type...it really strikes me as the pretty blonde who would be a complete PITA to live with.

Cadillac has enough electrical issues to make the Lucas electrical of 1950's and 1960's British iron look reliable enough for manned space flight.

Audi IMHO has some partially decent styling but they look heavy and un-athletic, the same thing I find so distasteful with the MKZ and Continental.

....and then getting back to the Lexus....tried to test drive one the other day...my wife dyed her hair grey...I had the theater department at my university make me up to look like an old man...we practiced walking hunched over and slowly...we borrowed a dowdy ten year old Toyota Avalon as a potential "trade"...thought we had it all made...

Got busted when they checked out my drivers license prior to the test drive and they regularized that I was only 51 years old.  Sales lady says I am welcome back in 19 years once I hit seventy.

Probably getting rapped on the knuckles with a ruler by the sales lady when i tried to change the infotainment system from Frank Sinatra to Alice in Chains should have been my first clue...

I still like the CC, though I prefer the pre-refresh version.  Can't wait to see what tis replacement is like.

I think the name change is probably a good thing.

 

The pre-refresh CC, to me at the time was a jaw dropping, head turning car for a VW. And the commercial they had for it, was just dripping with with all the right curves and camera angles.  I think it is a timeless design, though one thing I really liked was just the cohesion. There's only one other swoopy midsizer that I think comes close to the cohesion in terms of design, and that's the Mazda 6. The Fusion and Malibu have bits here and there that are discordant with another. Actually get rid of the front end of the 200, and yeah, I'd say it's up there too.

 

But this one of those cars that became a victim of it's own success. Mainstream midsizers are providing the swoopy styling for thousands less, and drive pretty close to this, and the majority would agree that the refresh in 2011 actually hurt the look of the vehicle.

 

VW knows how to make good car commercials, but I guess since their presence in North America is limited, they need some means of getting their brand out there. But also, VW did a great job of ending the commercial very much like the old adage, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Since you won't be fooled twice, VW is fully to blame for the styling, and of course the head lock that it induces of the bystander watching the car pass by.

      While crossovers are beginning to take up more of Volkswagen's attention, the German automaker knows they have to keep their eye on their passenger cars. Around the world, that is Golf. But in North America, that honor falls to the Jetta sedan. On the eve of the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the all-new 2019 Jetta.
      One change that we're happy to see is the Volkswagen has given the all-new Jetta some style. The front end reminds us of the European-spec Passat with the hexagonal grille and sculpted hood. The side profile shows off a distinctive character line and a somewhat coupe-like roof. Volkswagen says the Jetta is bigger in all dimensions, but only mentions the number for the wheelbase increase, 1.3 inches.
      The interior appears to be worlds better than the outgoing model with a similar design to the new Tiguan and higher-quality materials. All models get a touchscreen infotainment system, while the SEL and SEL Premium also get Volkswagen's digital cockpit that allows drivers to configure the layout to their liking.
      The turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder is sticking around for the new Jetta. Output is rated at 147 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. The base Jetta will get a six-speed manual as standard, while higher trims get a new eight-speed automatic. Under the skin, Volkswagen has finally moved the Jetta to their MQB platform.
      Volkswagen will offer the Jetta in five different trims when it launches in the second quarter of this year - S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. Pricing will begin at $18,545.

      Every Jetta model will come with the People First Warranty, America’s best bumper-to-bumper new vehicle limited warranty. The warranty provides coverage for six-years or 72,000-miles (whichever occurs first), and the warranty can be transferred to subsequent owners throughout the remainder of its duration.
      The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will be available in S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim levels and is expected to arrive at U.S. Volkswagen dealers in the second quarter of 2018. An R-Line trim will join the lineup at launch and features sportier styling, exclusive interior and exterior design elements, R-Line badging, and the XDS® electronic differential.

      Back in August, we reported that Volkswagen was planning to send the Passat GT concept shown at the 2016 LA Auto Show into production. The concept was Volkswagen's attempt at making the Passat become a bit more exciting with numerous cosmetic changes, a VR6 engine, and slight tweaks to the suspension. Next week at the Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen will show off the production model.
      The exterior of the Passat GT matches up with the concept as there are a blacked-out honeycomb grille, red accent striping, blacked-out trim, 19-inch wheels, and a black decklid spoiler. Only four colors will be available on the GT; Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Grey, and Deep Black. Inside, Volkswagen has added a fair amount of piano black and carbon fiber trim; two-tone leatherette upholstery for the seats, and aluminum GT-badged sills.
      Under the hood is the venerable 3.6L VR6 producing 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque - the same power figures as you'll find in the Passat V6 Premium. This is paired with a six-speed DSG. The GT will also feature a sport suspension that lowers the ride height. 
      Volkswagen will begin selling the Passat GT in the second half of 2018 with a base price of $29,940 (includes an $850 destination charge).

      The Passat GT joins the Passat lineup for model year 2018 as a limited-run special model based off the R-Line® trim. It will be available in four exterior colors—Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Grey, and Deep Black.
      Starting at the front, Passat GT differentiates itself from standard Passat models with standard LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). It borrows the R-Line® bumper and adds a honeycomb grille, GT badge, and a red accent line, reminiscent of the high-performance Golf GTI. A sport suspension gives it a more planted stance and cements the aggressive look.
      Moving around the side of the vehicle, the GT receives sporty touches from top to bottom. A black roof is complimented by black mirror caps and black window and door trim. Two-tone 19-inch “Tornado” wheels are accentuated with red-painted brake calipers, another nod to Volkswagen’s performance heritage.
      At the back, the Passat GT’s accents continue with a black spoiler and blackened LED taillights. The rear fascia also includes black bumper trim and a double exhaust with an acoustic package.
      Inside, the GT features piano black center console and vent trim, carbon fiber optic décor, black headliner, and aluminum GT-badged sills. Seating surfaces are black leatherette with Moonrock Gray inserts and contrast stitching. Standard interior comfort features include: a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone Climatronic® automatic climate control, and heated side mirrors.
      To keep passengers connected, the Passat GT features a Composition Media infotainment unit with 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display and standard Bluetooth® for compatible devices, Voice Control, and Volkswagen Car-Net® App-Connect technology that offers compatible smartphone integration with the three major platforms—Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®.  GT models feature two USB ports—one in the center console and one in the rear seat console. SiriusXM® Satellite Radio is standard and includes a three-month trial.

Shifting is handled by a standard six-speed DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic®, which features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

      The compact crossover arena has become highly competitive in the past couple of years and automakers are pulling all of the stops to draw customers into their showroom. Volkswagen is no exception.
      According to Automotive News, Volkswagen told its dealers that it would be cutting the price on several trims of Tiguan effective immediately. The price cuts are as followed,
      Tiguan S: $600 Tiguan SE: $2,180 Tiguan SEL: $1,460 This brings the base prices down to $25,495 for the S, $27,650 for the SE, and $31,990 for the SEL. Note: These prices are for the FWD models, AWD models will see the same price cut.
      Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen of America told Automotive News that he wants to see Volkswagen become "more of a mass-market automaker in the U.S." To do this, Volkswagen needed to price their vehicles more competitively. Hence why the Tiguan saw a price cut.
