Honda News: Honda's Civic Type R Could Be Boasting A CVT (UPDATE)

UPDATE: The folks at Temple of VTEC were able to find the quote from Car Magazine that the CivicX forums referenced.

"Doubtless power will continue to be transmitted by today's magical six-speed manual gearbox, with its tightly packed ratios. There's no indication of a dual-clutch gearbox for the Civic: the announced automated option is a CVT, although engineer Kariya hastily adds that he's tried to head-off the typical rev-metal thrash by making the cooking engines tractable at low revs."

We can see how some may think the Civic Type R could be getting a CVT from reading this (emphasis ours). But there is one key thing to be aware of. The line bolded mentions the Civic, not the Civic Type-R.

To put this story to rest, Temple of VTEC reached out to Honda for comment. Honda said that the Type R would only come with a six-speed manual. Those worried that Honda was going mad can breath a sigh of relief.

We're finally getting our chance to sample some forbidden fruit in the form of the Honda Civic Type R when it launches later this year. For awhile, we've known that the Type R would be coming with a six-speed manual transmission only. But it seems there is another transmission option on the horizon and one that will disappoint a number of enthusiasts. (SEE UPDATE ABOVE).

In the November issue of Car Magazine (via the CivicX forums), the publication spoke with three senior Honda folks,

  • Mirsuru Kariya - Head engineer of Civic
  • Daisuke Tsutamori - Head designer of Civic
  • Katsushi Inoue - Head of Honda Europe

One interesting bit of information that came out of this was the Type R getting the option of a CVT transmission. Yes, we can already hear the cries of those who believe Honda is watering the vehicle down. First, this an option as the manual will be standard. Second, engineers have reportedly tuned the transmission for low-end acceleration.

FAILURE!

Sorry but no CVT will handle being tuned for all out street racing. You cannot replace the strength and holding of traditional automatic transmissions with a cheap ass CVT metal impregnated band. Just cause they tune it for holding on low-end acceleration does not mean it will not skip and totally fail to deliver mid and high in aggressive driving. Plus with most people not able to drive manual trans anymore, the chance that most will come in with a manual compared to the dealership morons ordering the CVT auto is pretty clear. I would expect 1/3rd to be manual and 2/3rds to be CVT Crapola!

Jeez.  Glad the manual is still standard, but a nice DCT or even 8 speed auto would have been a MUCH better choice as an option

Interesting update, cool that they will only be manual trans for the Type R, but at the same time, Honda is still FAILING as they are missing out on the Enthusiast that wants better performance and would pay for a quality 8 speed auto trans in this car.

Weird Marketing for sure. Todays Auto trans are far superior to the manuals, why not a DCT Auto 8 spd?

Manual only. As it should be. If they need to appease the old and "all about the numbers, bro" crowds, put a CVT or auto in the Si. The R should only be for the most discerning enthusiasts. If they need an auto, go buy a Golf R.

Seems Honda Crushed the VW  Golf GTI Clubsport S for the best track time at Nurburg ring. 7 min and 43.8 seconds and only 3 seconds shy of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1's record. Impressive and you know the ricers are going to go crazy for the Type R.

In watching the video multiple times, I realize the Street legal tires they used sure screeched allot and clearly gave up some sticky control. Makes one wonder how fast they would have gone if they used true racing tires?

Amazing that this thing outruns the CTS-V of a few years ago.  I would be more impressed with Honda if the current SI was more distinct from the regular Civic.

      Nov 1, 2017 - TORRANCE, Calif.
      Civic leads strong month for Honda car sales, setting new October record with 15 percent gain All-new 2018 Accord helps America's best-selling midsize car to strong month Honda Pilot gains 18.5 percent, supported by increased production volume Acura MDX has strong month with sales of 5,287 based on increased production American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported October sales of 127,353 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 0.9 percent vs. October 2016. With strong sales of passenger cars, Honda Division reported an increase of 1.2 percent on sales of 114,655. Acura Division sales were down slightly at 1.3 percent on sales of 12,698 vehicles.

      Honda delivered another strong month with passenger car sales playing the lead role.  Civic outpaced the market again with another double-digit gain while Accord, strengthened by the debut of the all-new 2018 model, gained 4.7 percent in October. Increased production of Pilot also paid dividends as sales climbed 18.5 percent for the month. Elsewhere in the truck lineup, tight supplies of key model trims checked sales growth.
      Honda car sales gained 6.3 percent in October, with 60,283 units sold. Civic sales climbed 15 percent on sales of 30,319 for the month, a new October record. Accord posted 26,740 sales, up 4.7 percent with the debut of the all-new 2018 model, with 2.0T and Hybrid variants yet to launch. Pilot sales gained notably in October for the second straight month, with sales up 18.5 percent on sales of 10,285. "With key competitors resorting to aggressive discounting and heavy incentives even on new models, Honda is riding the growing momentum of a robust product lineup boosted by the all-new Accord," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of the Automobile Division of American Honda. "As the rollout of the new 2018 Accord continues, we're focused on a strong finish to 2017 and a fourth consecutive year of record sales."
      Acura
      Acura sales were led by MDX, which gained again as it benefitted from higher production volume with the complete shift of production to the East Liberty Plant in Ohio.  And while sedan and RDX sales were challenged by the aggressive incentives by competitors, the NSX had its best sales month since going on sale in 2016 with a 30 percent gain in October.
      MDX sales were up 4.7 percent in October, with 5,287 units sold. RLX sales are climbing, helped more significantly by the RLX Sport Hybrid as it continues to gain recognition. RLX gained 6.5 percent on sales of 99 units. ILX sales were up 2.6 percent on sales of 1,025 vehicles. "We're pleased to see the higher inventory from the move of Acura MDX production quickly result in stronger sales," said Jon Ikeda, vice president & general manager of the Acura division. "With the redesigned RLX ready to hit the market in the coming days sporting a strong expression of the new Acura design direction, we'll look to close 2017 with stronger sedan sales."

      Ever since the S2000 was discontinued back in 2009, many people wished for Honda to do an affordable sports car. Some of those folks work for Honda. Case in point is Stephen Collins, director of Honda Australia who told CarAdvice that he would like to see something like this make a return.
      “We’ve said it a number of times: we really want to dial up the sportiness of our range and our brand. NSX is one part of that, Type R is another. But if anything else becomes available, we’d really be chasing that pretty hard,” said Collins.
      “Type R is a hot hatch and if there’s another type of sports car that becomes available to us, say if it was a convertible or something that could come in at around $30,000 (list price), that would be very desirable for us.”
      When asked about S660 roadster, Collins shot down this idea.
      “The S660 is a beautiful little sports car but it was only really designed for Japanese domestic market,” he said. “To get it homologated and up to a standard for the Australian market would be difficult. It’s also very constrained by production and, unfortunately, it’s not made for export. But if a small, sporty car like that became available to Honda Australia we’d definitely stick up our hand for it. Sadly, the S660 is not an option for us.”

      The only way you can purchase a Honda Civic Type R is the fully loaded Touring trim with adaptive dampers, navigation, LED headlights, etc. Possibly, you might have to pay a 'market adjustment' price - i.e. a dealer adding a few grand to the price to make a quick buck. But 2018 could see Honda introduce a base version of the Type R.
      The Truth About Cars uncovered NHTSA certification papers filed by American Honda for the 2018 model year. The papers reveal two Civic Type R models, 'Type R' and 'Touring'. Both models have the same engine code - K20C1 which corresponds to the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. 
      As we reported back in June, Honda is considering adding more Civic Type R variants to "broaden the audience and keep sales fresh." One way to that is to introduce a lower-cost model. Honda already sells one in other markets that lose out on the navigation system, parking sensors, and LED lighting.
