VW News: Rumorpile: Volkswagen's Sub-20,000 Euro Electric Car

Volkswagen is planning a lineup of electric vehicles which include a hatchback, crossover, and small van. But a new report says the German automaker has ambitions to launch an electric vehicle with a pricetag of about 18,000 euros (about $21,000).

Sources tell Bloomberg the model in question will be a subcompact crossover and begin selling sometime after 2020. According to Reuters, the model is currently known as "MEB entry". Volkswagen is planning a production volume of 200,000 vehicles that will take place at three factories. This vehicle hasn't been approved by Volkswagen's supervisory board. According to sources, a discussion on the vehicle is expected to take place during their next meeting on November 16th - the same meeting that is reportedly where a discussion on possible expanding their partnership with Ford is expected to take place.

Sources also mentioned another electric model, the I.D. Aero. The midsize sedan and wagon would be built at Volkswagen's Emden plant in Germany. Emden is currently home to the production of the European Passat sedan and wagon, but sources say production of the model would move to the Czech Republic in 2022. Having the Aero take the Passat's place would help keep jobs at Emden.

Volkswagen declined to comment.

Moving EV production to Emden would also help to lower cost. The German Unions are killing profitable auto building in Germany as the cost of labor is crazy high. I just hope we see these EVs in the US too and not just Europe and China.

I understand why VW would move Passat production out of Germany.  Too bad VW will not build this EV CUV in, say, Chattanooga.

This will be impressive if they pull it off.  This is also the sort of thing that would get EV’s mainstream.

      The EPA has released the estimated range rating for the 2020 Kia Soul EV and the results look good.  With its 64 kWh battery, the Kia Soul EV should be able to travel 243 miles on a single charge.  That's down 15 miles from the more aerodynamic Hyundai Kona EV with the same battery and up 4 miles from the slightly larger and heavier Kia Niro EV.  It also manages to beat the Bolt EV with its 60 kWh battery and the Nissan Leaf E+ with its 62 kWh battery.  Most importantly, it handily beats the 111 mile range the 2019 Kia Soul Electric was capable of.

      The Soul EV is capable of using DC fast charging to get to 80% charge in as little as an hour.  Level 2 charging from empty will take 9 hours, while charging on a standard household plug will take 59 hours from zero.  Buyers of the Kia Soul EV will want a Level 2 charger at their house. 
      The Soul EV packs an electric motor rated for 201 HP and 291 lb-ft of torque, a substantial upgrade from the prior model's 109/210 respectively. 
      While we don't have pricing yet, we do know that the Soul EV will be a limited release model, selling mostly to drivers in California.

      Detroit Auto Maker Rivian landed $700M in investment commitments lead by Amazon.  Rumors were swirling earlier this week that Amazon and GM were in talks to provide investment that valued the company between $1B and $2B.  GM is not part of this round of investing, but that does not mean GM is out of it just yet.
      Rivian plans to introduce the R1T pickup (shown above) in 2020 with the R1S SUV following later.   Four more vehicles are planned starting in 2025.  The vehicles are set to be produced at Rivian's plant in Normal, Ill., a former Mitsubishi facility.
      Amazon's interest in Rivian includes using Rivian's technology to support its own logistics and delivery services.  GM's interest comes from CEO Mary Barra's commitment to a Zero emissions future.  GM is studying the feasibility of an Electrified GMC Sierra  while crosstown rival Ford has plans for an EV F-150.

While not even on sale yet, Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars says that the automaker will have difficulty meeting the demand in 2019 and unlikely even in 2020.  He told Die Welt "But we're doing everything we can to achieve maximum capacity".  Official production estimates for the model have not yet been released.
      The Mercedes Benz EQC will debut in the US in 2020.  Its two electric motors are rated for 402 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque.  The 80kWh battery pack is capable of taking the crossover approximately 228 miles or more.   Official range estimates have not yet been released.
      Production of the EQC will begin in Bremen soon, while China production will start later in 2019.
