  1. A lot of expensive tech to what benefit? Mirrors work

  3. It seems like Toyota doesn't want to build smaller cars themselves anymore (smaller than Corolla). They're currently outsourcing some of that to Mazda, but perhaps that will go to Suzuki for the next generation. The Swift would have made a good Yaris. Also, Suzuki does really well with small engines. Not that Toyota can't, but perhaps they don't see the ROI on doing it themselves when they can get a perfectly good small engine from a partner like Suzuki or Mazda.

  5. Yeah, I had to replace a whole mirror assembly on my Jeep when the lower surround of it was cracked. Was $380 to replace (incl. labor). Have to take off the interior door panel to unbolt it and disconnect the wires..

  6. I got the extended warranty on my CPO Jeep for 7 years/100,000 miles. I don't plan to keep it past 100,000 miles so I figured it was worth it.

  10. I do think some of those safety features should be standard. I had a really near miss on Rt 1 in NJ after leaving @balthazar's place on Monday. Two Toyota Minivans stopped in the middle of Rt 1 but no traffic around them. The Encore handled the swerve well.

  12. With gravy and a side of texas toast. Hot coffee to follow and a movie in the family room after. Perfect way to spend a random Saturday rainy afternoon. Gone fotever are the days of simple drivers cars I loved. Still enjoying the Beetle but driving a ton of miles...GTI or Miata to replace it in a few years. Which is most definitely not a Malibu. Although the Bu is a sharp looking car...

  13. I don't see the military buying this independent suspension or not. It looks like a more capable puff cruiser than anything else. Nothing like the old Defender. This is more their Grand Cherokee than their Wrangler.

  14. Going forward all of these safety features will be standard (pretty much already) on all cars and trims, and I don't think they will be easily defeatable, if at all. Same as airbags, ABS and traction control.

  15. Yet the missing piece is ECONOMY OF SCALE. Seems a few folks here are stuck on thinking that when the right packaged auto is built that it would not become profitable at economy of scale. I honestly think a few folks will be eating crow when the EV market explodes in sales while ICE dwindles and dies.

  18. Good News cost of S-Class side mirrors have dropped in the last few years. Bad News ya still looking at $570 to $675 dollars for the mirror module and then installation, so I bet a cool $1,500 for the repair of a broken mirror. Estimate on the Camera nubs is probably $1,500 to $2,500 depending on brand.

  19. Which is exactly my point to my last post. Cheaper to maintain by a country mile. Oh and some insurance coverage plans will cover a broken mirror. Your HD side view screen goes out? Better talk to the manufacturer and hope it’s still under warranty.

  20. Mirrors aren't exactly cheap, either. Power control, sometimes heated, and almost always you have to buy the entire assembly. It's hundreds to start. All the 'side view camera' images David posted above suck- both in integration, and field of vision. A distraction. Only reason I can see for overly-complicating side views is for aerodynamics, tho at the average speed most cars travel, it's pointless.

  21. I had an extended warranty on my Lucerne that lasted three years. Several repairs (including a radiator leak) were fixed and I only had to pay a $100 deductible the three times the Lucerne needed a significant repair. About the GM charges for an extended warranty, good to know for my next GM vehicle. Thanks.

  22. Absolutely not. They're so ridiculously overpriced I don't even consider them. I think they wanted like $3500-4000 for 3 years or 45,000 miles on my Lincoln.

  24. Polestar has opened their factory in Chengdu, China to begin production of the Polestar 1. The factory was designed to achieve a Gold status LEED certification. The Polestar 1 is a luxury hybrid coupe that boasts over 600 horsepower and 1,000 nm (738 lb-ft) of torque and an electric only range of 93 miles. It is a limited production run of 500 vehicles per year and most of the early allocations are sold out. One other announcement came with the factory press release. Polestar has filed for and received their World Manufacturing Identifier, basically their character in the VIN that identifies them. This means that Polestar manufactured vehicles will not have a Volvo VIN but a Polestar VIN instead. Polestar will still apply their performance technology know-how to higher performance Volvos. 31. It's not about them sharing anything. It's about bringing a small 4-dr hatch to market in the same 'entry-level' size class. Similar consumer preference as to product size/function, and similar material costs… only major difference as far as the investment is in the power train. In other words, is there anything BESIDES the power train in your opinion that makes the Bolt 'worthy' of a $36K tag? IMO; no. That cost differential is ALL in the power train costs. Hence, the Sonic comparison. The track record on EVs dictates that an BEV Equinox would be expected to be approx. $50K. Want to watch BEVs explode in volume? Take a $24K Equinox and offer up a $28K BEV version with the Bolt's range. When that's actually going to happen in anyone's guess.

  32. It will happen one day, just not any day or year soon. Certainly not by “2023” or “2025” as recent articles have proclaimed. RE the early days of the auto, you were changing the very means of conveyance. In order to mimic todays IC vs. EV, you'd have to try and convince the Year 1900 consumer to trade his horse conveyance for a cow.

  33. 10 years is FAR too short a prediction. 50 is more like it. 17 million count ship takes agonizingly wide turns. EV price disparity is the #1 obstacle.

  34. Seems people keep thinking that Economy of Scale will never happen to EVs unlike how it happened to ICE. Early 1900's you had people that laughed at the auto and said the Horse and buggy would never die. Amish continue to prove you can survive living in the past at a static point in time, but clearly not scaling up like modern society.

  35. I read American buyer, not ‘buyer of American auto’. Friend’s wife has a new CX-5, she just said she wouldnt buy it again given the chance. 1 notch below top trim, all sorts of nannies. Its not ‘education’ IMO, its the features themselves. Folk are more interested in the imagined concept than the actual feature.

  36. Not a single proposed model on the horizon with a sub-median msrp. Even if costs drop so radically that its possible, manufacturers will never do it. No one has better economies of scale than Tesla, and there the Model S, which used to be $57K, is now $81K.

  37. First review of the 2020 GMC 1/2 ton diesel pickup. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/reviews/2020-gmc-sierra-1500-preview/ Have to say, very taken with this, focus on Fuel economy over pulling as according to GM, customers move up to the HD line of pickups when they go over 10,000 pounds trailing. Love the camera views, for sure makes it much safer driving. Sadly the review says GM is competitive with Tech and features of the truck, but the interior still looses to the Ram and Ford. Come on GM get it together for a competitive Interior. I just finished reading the 2019 Malibu review for a segment that is still selling a ton of Auto's and the Malibu is GMs loan competitor to the class. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/reviews/2019-chevy-malibu-review/ This statement speaks boat loads about GMs approach which sucks to autos. QUOTE: If price matters more than anything, you'll undoubtedly appreciate that the Malibu starts well below competitors like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. Yet, aside from the infotainment system, those cars pack superior standard equipment. Trying to equip the Malibu similarly brings the cost way up, at which point its appeal rides the asymptote down toward "None." If you simply must stay in the GM family, your money is better spent on an Equinox. ?

They are sharp cars, one of those cars that looks much better in person than in photos...I made a run to Ace Hardware this morning and drove past a house where an older guy was out mowing his lawn, had his garage door open...a new burgundy Continental was sitting in the garage next to a late 80s Town Car in a similar color.

  44. We know the limitations (and the history) of the ICE as well. Maybe we should just sidestep that little fact (or should I say “facts”?) to save your delicate sensibilities. Every year in the last ten years has shown progress on just about every front where EVs are concerned (from increased range, faster charges, to increased infrastructure). These are all facts that have addressed these “limitations”. Is it all the way there yet? No but again, the progress doesn’t lie. Only you.
