G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com According to the Frankfurt AFP, ten years after the end of the iconic original beetle, Volkswagen is ending their Type 2 Van on December 20, 2013. This will close a 63 year run for a Van that has seen world history through the eyes of many. To many, the camper van star shines as bright as the original Beetle star shined when production came to a close. The Type 2 -- which shares the Beetle's rear engine and its axles -- started life as a doodle by Dutch car salesman Ben Pon, VW's first car dealer outside Germany, on a visit to the carmaker's plant in Wolfsburg in 1947. VW finally agreed to put it into series production in March 1950. Originally conceived as a cargo transport, it was given the ability to haul people in 1951. The hippie generation of the 60's and 70's gave it cult status with world wide building of the van up to 1979 when Germany stopped production. Production ended in South Africa and mexico over the 80's and 90's leaving sole production to the Brazil plant which produced and shipped the van's world wide. Following the announcement earlier this year to finally halt production, VW launched a special edition, costing 85,000 reais or around 27,000 euros ($37,500). Available to those that could import the van that no longer meets most strict emissions. Despite its demise, the camper van's legend will live on, and it is etched into the collective memory by its appearances in the Scooby-Doo TV series and more recently in the film "Little Miss Sunshine".

While reading her credentials: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Barra She has been around the whole company so she should have a solid grasp of what it takes to build a quality product. I just hope her days at reducing the number of platforms and bean counting for purchasing of parts does not lead her to go in the direction of reducing costs just to increase profits. That never worked for GM. I hope she brings a passion for quality auto's that strike EXCITEMENT into buyers and fear into the competition. Hope she pushes through the VOLT power train on CUV's and Full size SUV's.

Nice write up, wish people would realize that America builds Luxury driving machines and not always just drop back to the plastic over rated so called German Driving machines. I noticed that the back seat picture shows the front passenger seat folded forward. It would be great to see the front seat set for a 5'10" guy or better yet 6' tall person and then have a measuring stick to show real leg space from the seat to the back of the front seat. Is it really comfy from a seat width standpoint? I have found more and more center stacks eating up valuable passenger comfort space. What about the trunk? How big, how many full size suitcases would fit in it? Over all very informative and an enjoyable read.

Would you consider the car if it had Diesel or convert to CNG for much cheaper fueling?

The Other Shoe Drops: Holden Ceases Manufacturing In 2017
G. David Felt commented on William Maley's article in Holden
True, was only time before a strong currency and high cost of basic labor killed manufacturing. Be interesting to see how Holden deals with the negativity. Hopefully the workers will not damage the auto's they make.- 7 comments

Beauties from the 20's and 30's and more
G. David Felt replied to G. David Felt's topic in The Lounge
Lovely Balthazar. Thanks for adding another beauty to the list. Agreed on the Rolls, but then it is what was on the signs. Please everyone, post any other cars you feel deserves to be with this class of cars. -

Intersting, I hate the wheels as they are a pain to keep clean. The fender lines make me think they will depart from the Predator grill and go after more of a racing nose to cut the air. Should be interesting. Looks like a tight short overhang.

Sales: Notes From The Numbers - Luxury Edition
G. David Felt replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in 2013 Sales Archive
When your rebuilding a brand and their image, I can understand the desire to have a halo car like a 2 door convertible, but I think that is a waste of money at this time and there are better options to sink R&D into for expanding models that will have a greater impact on the Cadillac line. The coupes and diesels / Hybrid power trains will be better for Cadillac than the convertible. That can be done down the road when profits are deeper. -
Sales: Notes From The Numbers - Luxury Edition
G. David Felt replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in 2013 Sales Archive
The 300 is a luxury car... Do you guys think I should have included Buick? Except the Verano and Encore, most of their cars sticker predominatnly over $30. Even the Regal which is under $30k MSRP for the most basic model heads north of that as soon as the destination charge is added. I think it would be good to clearly define the mid luxury segment from the high luxury segment. -
Industry News: Suzuki: Kizashi A "Headache"
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Industry News
you do know that Suzuki is one of the top 2 car seller in Japan, number one in India, and number 9 it is I believe the world? They might be tops in a couple markets and might be tops in a market segment in Japan. Having gone to college there, you do not see Suzuki on the roads as much as you see Honda and Toyota. India I see more Suzuki motorcycles than auto's on the road since I travel there to work with an engineering team often. -
I disagree. Remember when FORD tried to harp on the fact that they never got bailed out and the federal government told them to back off? There are some people who think that GM and Chrysler should have died nearly five years ago. GM is much better off having no financial relationship with Treasury. I agree that any business is better off not having a relationship with the gov, but if you take a bail out, it should be paid back penny for penny, not at a loss. I also do not think FORD is better off for going the route they went. They have many quality problems still and they still have a large amount of debt that will make it much harder down the road. I still see large executive payout and only a token payment onto debt. I have to question FORD long term thinking.

Anyone use Nitrogen in their Tires?
G. David Felt replied to Rvinyl.com's topic in Product Questions and Reviews
I have to say that I have found N2 to in extreme cold go lower requiring more N2 to be added to the tire. I know that Costco uses it but the expense of buying N2 and that not everyone uses it in addition to my own air pump at home. I just mix it. -
Sad, I wish the GOV had a long term interest in the growth of GM and held onto the shares as it would have paid back 100% if not more eventually.

Industry News: Suzuki: Kizashi A "Headache"
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Industry News
Suzuki should have never gotten into cars. Every Japan company thinks they have to do everything and this has hurt more than helped their economy especially in the last 15 years. -
Audi News: Audi Decides Q3 Is Too Big, Teases Q1 Crossover
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Volkswagen
That is cool to hear that it is that cheap. That would be a no brainer for me also. -
Susuki Samurai smashed against the K rail this morning due to ice on the road. Have to say it is good to see the SS, but those pictures just confirm what I have felt in my gut. Bland and not at all inspiring. DOA for the SS.

So to me the BIG QUESTION? Would it make more sense for GM to kill off the Chevy, Opel and Vauxhall name plates and come up with a new name plate for a auto company focused on the Euro market that would appeal to the Euro Customer? This would then have no history and could have a clean plate to start from.

Audi News: Audi Decides Q3 Is Too Big, Teases Q1 Crossover
G. David Felt replied to William Maley's topic in Volkswagen
With this CUV having a diesel, I could see the Encore Diesel being a 40K Auto. -
I think only high volume Chevy dealers should be allowed to order this anyway just like the ZR1 corvette. This is not a mass crowd auto and so should be at the largest dealerships as a halo product. Those will find select people who are interested in buying a limited edition auto.

Sales: Notes From The Numbers - Luxury Edition
G. David Felt replied to Drew Dowdell's topic in 2013 Sales Archive
With the auto packages that OEM's are pushing such as the Platinum edition, it makes FORD have more Luxury versions than Lincoln.
