Todd Lassa: GM and Ford's rear-wheel-drive strategies
turbo200 replied to wildcat's topic in General Motors
I wasn't making the point that G8 V6 or any GM V6 is class leading. For the G8, the mileage figure is great considering the fact that the major argument against RWD has been the fuel economy issue, and G8 wholly disproves this. I'm not saying GM's cars aren't heavy either. We work with what we have. I'd be willing to bet $500 the G8 has a sportier feel, tighter steering, tighter suspension, and perhaps more nimble or at least more tossable feel and actually numers wise will perform slightly better in handling tests than the Avalon. The Avalon is no where near the main competition, that competes with a Buick. Because you try to paint the Avalon as a better performer than G8 I have to say all this, I'm also skeptical dimmensions wise Avalon is near as large as G8 inside. Is Avalon even rated as a full-size car? -

I'm starting to think we're not even on the same page quality-wise. But a couple points here....first of all, I think you're pricing the G8 in your mind a little higher than it is. See it's loaded at $33k, that's top of the line maxed out, with a big honkin engine that'll make you smile. The car is in the right place market wise, but that means it doesn't undercut its competition, fully loaded Accords/Camrys/Maximas/300s/Chargers, but rather sits in good company with them. As it should, as a really great Pontiac. Want to see what another limited Pontiac with great desirability does for resale, check GTO resale. Next point is who cares about Hyundai? Seriously, I mean the Genesis is first of all not a car I'd like to be seen in, but then to put icing on the cake, it's got a brand name I also wouldn't like to be associated with. Would I buy one, yeah maybe if that Genesis coupe gets styled right I might consider it since it actually represents a 180 from Hyundai's image [from what I saw of the concept], but the sedan does no favors to that brand, regardless of what price/quality/performance the car may have. The Genesis sedan is not a car screaming "My buyer made the right choice." Finally, RWD RWD RWD. Balance balance balance. High quality leather, room to stretch out, cool red interface, and a luxurious ambience, though I am a major fan of black and this could be swaying me a lot... -
I agree! I love everything Maserati. They have a great sense of what makes a car right. Style style style. substance, quality, attention to detail, timelessness, engine feel/sound. GM needs more of that all around.

turbo200 replied to Newbiewar's topic in The Lounge
yep, that's pretty much it. if any of GM's brands had anywhere near the reputations of MB or BMW we'd all be singing praises, and GM would too. The truth is MB and BMW have worked hard to cultivate this image, and the buyers know it's there, they are natural choices for good reason. -
oh whatever that's not robbery. robbery is when something you love and need is taken from you and you're left feeling victimized, hurt, opressed, and without something major in your life. go on with a smile. this has happened to me many times. real robbery is when someone breaks into your car and takes precious items, which I've had happen twice to me.

I've sat in a production car! honestly, as long as the quality is good, which it is, what matters most in any interior is how it looks and consistency. You can't have three panels that look great and then boom one piece is awful and doesn't mesh at all with the interior. Cough*CTS*cough I remain truly disappointed with that interior. It looks high quality and in some pieces is truly there but then other appointments defy its $49k total price, ahem rear center armrest, ahem thin, hollow door panels, ahem cheap center stack, ahem insubstantial radio/HVAC controls See I'm not crazy or giving the G8 a free pass! The G8 has very appropriate quality for its class. I think the items that matter it gets right, center armrest/storage, gear selector design and quality, center stack controls, door armrest padding/design, door panels feel/solidarity, steering wheel shape/design/size/quality.......anywho that's getting detailed. I didn't find flimsy center stack controls, yeah they lack the padded substantial feel of a VW, but then so does most everyone else. That's one air of perfection that isn't needed to evoke good, just perfection. So VW's perfect, G8's great. It is definitely in the right price class and feels like a great $30k car. The impression of size and the comfort of seating all around really help. The all around room to stretch out add a great deal to the impression. -

and with that, the G8's backseat was easily the most comfortable I've ever found in a GM car! no bias, just the truth. -

concise and valid points. things that have already been discussed. best case scenario is GM sees more and more of these reports and thier hands are forced. the argument is made in favor of zeta, noting the great engineering and overall great car G8 is. specifically, fuel mileage is barely less than Malibu, by only 1 mpg!! so hopefully the incomprehensibles at GM read this. and my own words as well. zeta has full size room with a relatively smaller footprint [it's 4 inches shorter than Impala!!], great full-size segment fuel economy potentially a class leader in that regard, and it's a great car that offers so so much in the form of G8 as the G8 gains popularity, which hopefully will be extreme, we will see more of these kinds of articles pointing out the truth to GM. Anyone notice by the time of Malibu's intro, plenty more reviewers had press cars to start the media bombardment? Does it cost money to get cars in the hands of reviewers? This is where the marketing budget needs to go for this car, it's a fabulous car that needs to receive the attention of at least as many reviewers as Malibu did upon intro. For reference G8 gas mileage is at 15/24 for the V8. 17/26 is what the V6 Malibu gets compared to 17/25 for the G8 V6. Even V8 gas mileage is relatively good; precedence for this engine is to be able to get up to 30 mpg on highway stretches. -

yep it's definitely a sports coupe with a pickup bed. that's probably the angle they'll hit on. As far as the performance, princSD, check out edmunds.com for a full review on the Aussie version, I beleive it may have even been the last gen, but it was a recent article. short answer, they loved the performance. -

And that's the best part about the car. It's a complete car. Inside and out it knocks you out with how much it makes sense. Thoroughly executed. From Pontiac. Yeah, there was no last time you could say that, not in my lifetime. Dodgefan: I don't like giving up either. -

What are you talking about man, just go sit in the car. Just. Do. It. Have you sat in one? Just answer that question first, honestly, and this will give us your qualification for your claims. I am a seriously critical person when it comes to interior design. I am seriously critical of all forms of design, from jeans, to homes, to women. And I am seriously critical of quality, from fabric to plastics to metals. And I'm critical of all things that have been engineered, created from start to finish. One of the first things that started to wear on me about my Civic ['07 Navi] was the interior design. Like it never actually appealed to me all that much. It has its nice touches, Navi helps, but the design fails to meet my standards, even though I can say there are spices of good design. All that being said, the Mazda 3 has a fine interior for the mid class sector. Meaning, you could transplant much of what makes this interior a winner into any under 30k car. For the price, quality does get better, mostly in VW and the Accord, I guess, when comparing to the Mazda3 [newer crossovers like the Murano, CX series don't really count as those can get into the mid to high 30's pretty easily]. When talking strictly cars and its price class, there is not anything you can say against the G8, for its price class. It generally competes with loaded Accords and Camrys, and has quality equivalent to those with what to my eyes is a superior design. I guess the Legacy GT has a higher quality [though I haven't been in this car in a long while]. Look, I'm not blowing smoke, if I say the interior quality is acceptable, it just is. It's no circa-2000 Passat, but then not many surpass VW's incredible touch for quality. Just want to clarify what I'm talking about here, your first time in the 2000 Passat, whenever that was, well close to the intro date, not now, you would have said, wow, this is seriously nice, and everything was just right. That wow factor isn't necessarily there in the G8, except that everything does feel right, but not necessarily shockingly good like the Passat was then. All in all the design works. It works really well. Sit in the back seat and you get a sense of an elegant, purposeful sedan. No misses here. No misses. It could be fancier, it could be a more eye-catching design, like the Malibu, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, and the design fits the character of the car really well. -

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about smallchevy. I see letters and symbols, not sure what that is all about. But yeah, that detail would be seriously important. They should try and capatilize on the G8's intro and get it here like tomorrow, before gas prices go much crazier. Realistically, I see no reason why we should have to wait any longer than the Aussies, so hopefully they've got thier act together and it won't be getting here late next year, like some of these crazy reports are trying to say. I thought of a name, maybe already been said. the Pontiac G8 Haul Your ASS. It would be cool if on Tuesday they showed the Solstice Targa and a concept Pontiac Coupe 60. -

huh? [scooby Doo ears] The G8 interior is about as minimalist as you can get, free of unnecessary touches and complete with enough bling and overall elegance to fully satisfy the average person just looking for a classy interior. It's pretty nice in there. Coming from someone who loves Audi, MB, BMW interior design. -

turbo200 replied to Newbiewar's topic in The Lounge
The G8 is a lot better looking in person. I would go as far as to call it the best looking GM sedan, period. The Cadillac effect is wearing thin on me with the CTS, and the sides are really plain, the best angle for me is becoming the rear where the rear flares accentuate the taillights. So the G8 is a seriously good looking machine, especially with premium wheels you can put on it with all the extra change you get from not buying a BMW. The quality is nothing to sneeze at. It's great in its price class. BMW will have better/more solid controls in some cases, and in some cases the Pontiac will meet it. But I'm sure you're not a dash raper, and neither is your wife, and you will be more than happy. The G8 delights with an elegant ambience and a straightforward, smart, and classy dash/console area. My advice....you're in the military, I believe. That's what you mean by deployment. So she must know not only the value of your life, but the value of the money you make. Take her to drive a G8, look at black, cause it looks freakin killer in that color, I think the lines are brought out, not hidden, it has a substance, and the luxury look/feel is really there. I think 50 Cent may have been onto somehting, and wasn't just in it for the money [though he did have the G6 GXP in the video too Take it out, test drive the best, do the V8, emphasize all the great room and the beautiful texture of the leather [it's really quite good]. Emphasize the cool dash, with straightforward controls, and the fact that it all looks right and elegant. No missteps here. Then go to BMW, take the 328, show her what the real numbers will look like back to back on both cars, because with a lease, that's the only way you'll be able to get close to a buy with a Pontiac [with a really great down and great interest rate of course]. Emphasize the small size backseat, the cheaped out equipment, the cheaped out wheels, then take it for a drive and emphasize the lack of power comparitively to the monster V8 torque. Of course, both lease and a buy are equal in the end, you end up selling the car for not more than what you owe, so it comes down to which car she likes more. If after all this she still wants a BMW, then give her what her heart wants. You should only get what you really want after all, especially after considering all the options. -
Looks great. the relatively high shoulderline complement the low roofline. suddenly there's a new sports car in town, and one that can take its hard top off. This will be sweet.

I'd be in support of chokeholds on the engine, by transmission, emission...that are easily reversable....in order to meet stricter CAFE/emission standards. So, even though this may not be the case here, we all know the LS line of engines are easily modifiable. 400 hp is so much for the average person. It's more than enough. There is no reason to complain. Let's be happy the car is here and not shelved like the beautiful Impala we heard so much about. -

oh ya it needs all kinds of crazy colors. which brings me to my next point, GM has gotten better at picking colors for thier cars, but they still suck majorly at it. Starting with the Acadia, which is a very cool truck but looks awful traditional/GM in the red, some better/blinger colors would be nice. -
I used my Navi to find a Big 5 Sporting Goods today; I use it so many times a week to locate restaurants, stores, libraries, etc. It also helps me to see alternate streets, residentials etc, on the spot so if the street I'm on is ridiculously congested, I can move one over and find another way to get there. I'd say it's pretty useful.

we need time to think! Navajo is pretty close to utility knife in spanish. but I wouldn't suggest it. Cherokee? a name is probably one of the hardest things to come up with, imo, for marketing purposes. it literally has to speak all the different things you are saying with the car. This car really is a lot like a swiss army knife. multiple uses, rough and tumble, highly functional, and needs to sound cool and fast. What about Pontiac Switchblade? And I totally agree this car needs something new to enforce it's revolutionary nature for Pontiac. oh and No Va does mean doesn't go, in literal translation, in Spanish there are a lot less complex wordings than English, which is why it's hard for Spanish speakers to learn the language -

you're thinking in the box. the pontiac camino will appeal to sportster truck buyers, the ones who do custom work on thier truck, they want the truck image, but they want a badass truck, usually these buyers flock to tacomas. the same that it will appeal to performance coupe buyers, and to buyers who just want something unique. this will not have a problem finding 15k buyers per year. -

I almost think G8 sport truck is the most professional sounding name so far. I just saw a G8 in person for the first time, I'll give some impressions later in the right thread, but suffice to say this is one serious car. the best looking car in GM's stable, imo. The seriousness of the car negates names like Syclone or Custom-S, creative as they are. I like your ideas, and I like that you're not just naming it some standard. I think this car needs a break from the past too. Whatever it gets named, it should be stealth, take a bite out of you, and not recall anything Pontiac. -

people are not getting what kind of smackdown performance this little truck has. re-read the edmunds article on the Maloo and you'll see what even edmunds, with thier southern california mentalities, feel this will do. it's a performing beast, that will help give it a different image from any baja. it'll be more like a performance coupe with a cool pickup bed....that'll fit surfboards, ATVs, have plenty of towing power, etc. It will find homes, and cultivate a cool image what with all the neck-snapping ability. EDIT: when does this come out? -
I have to say I am a sucker for good car deals. reading the specs, the 6.0 V8 dual pads for controlling the auto, and the black color, all for under $32k! that really looks great on paper. the people will come.

The Pontiac G8 has a strong theme that will help it sell. No other sedan in this price class has such great proportions or is styled like an athletic sports sedan with no frills. Finally an atletic looking car from Pontiac. And one with taste, refinement. This design will age well and will maintain whatever popularity it eventually grows to over its life. The only thing hurting it maybe if these buyers don't want to give Pontiac a chance, and since the theme doesn't reflect anything new, it may be the best looking Pontiac in decades, but it still looks like the same Pontiac....Pontiac's design theme was never bad looking. This car has taken it and basically perfected what you're going to get from the current Pontiac face. Inside is what I've always been hoping for from Pontiac, minimalist, clean, driver-oriented with simple controls, and just clean good sports sedan styling.
