What to you is the worst thing about being a GM fan?
knightfan26917 replied to A Horse With No Name's topic in The Lounge
Couldn't have said it more politically correct than this! Definitely the dashed hopes ... more pointedly, perhaps, the disappointments. *shrugs* I've noticed this a bit, too. However, I'm on enough forums/in enough groups (some all-GM like this, others Chevy specific, and mostly Monte Carlo-specific) that I don't see a complete lack of a social network. But, I understand what you mean. 2001 Lincoln LS - my new ride
knightfan26917 replied to mustang84's topic in Member's Rides Showcase
Definitely like your chop on this one, mustang. Too bad that isn't how it was actually done, though. Still ... SHARP Lincoln. I really like it, especially in that color ... kinda accentuates the lines, etc. CONGRATULATIONS! So ... how has the last month or so gone for everyone? My older 4 Monte Carlos (1972, 1976, 1979, 1981) FINALLY made their 2009 debut, Sunday, June 14, after my hernia-repair-forced "rest" the last weekend of May (a GORGEOUS weekend, btw) and a rainy first weekend of June. All 4 of them started with NO problems, and that day, I drove each of them ~30 miles. And, with drives, Monday, June 29 (an extra day off due to the MC Nationals), Friday, July 3 (July 4 Holiday weekend), and Sunday, July 5, of ~30, ~50, and ~45 miles respectively, I've now driven each of them OVER 150 miles already this year ... with a LOT more driving to be done! Unfortunately, none of them were driven to Collinsville IL (near St Louis MO) for the MC Nationals ... the older 4 MCs had not been safety checked yet [they all had their "annual checkup" early the week of July 6] and my daily driver '87 MC LS/CL needs new tires before another longer trip on the highways. BUT ... I WAS there ... and had a WONDERFUL time with great people and, of course, awesome Monte Carlos ... 104 of them in the show field. I posted pics to the newly-created NMCOA group on Facebook.... The UNOFFICIAL "breakdown": 1970-1972, Generation #1 = 13 1973-1975, Generation #2 = 4 1976-1977, Generation #2.5 = 6 1978-1980, Generation #3 = 5 1981-1986, Generation #4 SCs = 5 1983-1988, Generation #4 SSs = 48 1986-1988, Generation #4 LSs = 2 1995-1999, Generation #5 = 1 2000-2005, Generation #6 = 16 2006-2007, Generation #6.5 = 3 Looking ahead.... I can't believe this is ALMOST here ... MidSummer Chitown Gathering #2: http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?showtopic=26485 And, I'm trying to narrow down plans for the Route 66 Drive in September: http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?showtopic=26482 [updates on both of those coming yet tonight.] I'll be washing the older 4 MCs this coming Saturday (waxed the '87 MC LS/CL for the 2nd time this year this past Saturday). Then, Sunday, I'll be driving each of the older 4 a bit. I posted back in March about a possible surgery to repair an incisional hernia (above my belly button) that developed from my 2003 open heart surgery and made itself known in September 2008 at the NMCOA Mini Meet in Stillman Valley IL and then even more so in mid-February 2009. In March, I had decided to NOT get it repaired, since it was, according to the surgeon, small. However ... as some of you know ... that hernia had started to act up a bit more regularly the last few months (once, while I was visiting friends in Freeport IL in April) ... and with "car" and "road trip" season here, I decided enough was enough. So, Thursday, May 28, 2009, the incisional hernia was repaired. I wasn't able to drive until the following Monday, which meant I missed out on a GORGEOUS weekend of driving my older 4 Monte Carlos. The following weekend (first weekend of June) was rainy, of course, so didn't get them out for the first time that weekend either.... Ah, well ... plenty of time left in the year...right? My 6-month cardiology checkup 2 weeks later (Thursday, June 11) went well. Everything looks good; though, the pacemaker lifespan is now at ~5 years. The appointments were quick with the pacemaker clinic and my cardiologist, and I was back home by about 3:30p, after leaving home about 9:30a. BUT, my next appointment won't be so quick. Tuesday, December 15, I will have a stress echo (ugh), along with the pacemaker check and visit with my cardiologist.... Until then ... lots to do in the next few months! I am hoping to secure more sponsors and, perhaps, some blocks of rooms and restaurant reservations along the way. 2 ... I look forward to more feedback and plans being made as I continue to make contacts in the next month or so.... 3 ... See ... this example touches on a REAL NERVE with me. It's NO secret how much I like (OK, love) the Monte Carlo...and how that (well, the 1970-1988 originals, anyway) are the ONLY car on the road for me. BUT ... this does NOT mean that I do not appreciate other cars. I do. I have a few favorites that I'd bet would stun a few people...and a few favorites that everyone could pretty much guess...lol. So, this type of behavior between car owners is just ... ridiculous and I do NOT get it at all. Don't get me wrong ... I like rivalries between nameplates...heck, even within one nameplate ... but the type of behavior the guy you know encountered ... is just NOT cool ... and, imho, no excuse could POSSIBLY justify it ... Sadly, not as much as you ... but ... 1 ... If the weather cooperates later today (Saturday, June 13), get the older 4 Monte Carlos out for the first time this year. Hopefully buy another car ... either a winter beater (i.e. '77-'79 Caprice or another MC LS) or a winter/road trip/daily driver car (like a Dodge Charger or an '06/'07 Lumina LT or LTZ coupe (if I go this direction, it MUST have the standup spoiler and a sunroof). LOL! That's what we had as well. In fact, the year I had driver's ed (want to say 1991), the school had just received a few of these brand new from a local dealership! Nice. My parents had one of those; they bought a 1990 model to replace the '82 Chevette I had been driving... he he. Same here ... I've been nodding my head in agreement with many of the "plans". So, the only thing I'd add ... is what most people would expect from me. The Lumina coupe would've remained the Lumina coupe ... or got branded a brand NEW name entirely. None of this heritage-names-on-cars-that-have-NOTHING-in-common-with-the-originals "crap" ... especially the Lumina heritage of replacing the Celebrity.... *sighs* And, frankly, reading all of the ideas people have posted here ... kinda makes you wonder how things would be today if we were running GM, don't it? As much as we seem to be alike in our "set" ways about what we want in and out of a car, I'm slightly surprised it took you this long. However, as much as I can't seem to "get over" and forgive GM, Ch#$r%*et in particular, I can't seem to see myself buying anything else but ... and have come VERY close lately to buying an '06 Lumina LT coupe, maroon with black cloth interior, sunroof and the standup spoiler. *shrugs* I know it's "just a car" and "just a nameplate", but imho, Ch#$r%*et did a number on its enthusiasts, starting with the Toyota Nova/Ch#$r%*et Corolla in the 1980s, followed by the 1995-2007 Celebrity/Lumina "monte carlo" coupe, followed by the 1997 Corsica-replacing "malibu", followed by the 2000-current Celebrity/Lumina "impala" sedan. And the current climate, along with the dismantling of Oldsmobile and now Pontiac ... is just a bit too much.
