Good luck...I think my next step in staying healthy will be better dust collection for my woodworking equipment in my garage. I wear a good dust mask when running my table saw, but sawdust ends up everywhere with power tools. Can't help but think some of that is still winding up in my lungs given how much winds up on the floor and in the air... Which is why a lot of the time I prefer hand tools. Brian is 23 and one of my sons friends. He lives in an apartment with his girlfriend and has no room for a work shop, so I have been sharing my bench and my space. He has been building guitars from scratch using mostly hand tools, and I have been helping him. So far only electric guitars, but I want to try to build an acoustical guitar myself. Which involves getting off of my arse and finishing some projects around the house... One can burn a surprising amount of energy planeing, sawing, sanding, shaping, and finishing wood by hand. We have student trainers that will work with a faculty/Staff member over a semester and work with you on a regular basis in the weight room. Going to do that for spring semester to see if I can build some leg muscle for biking next summer.

I would say the Focus RS ranks up there with the WRX, but the WRX has a longer competition history. Dearly love the Golf R, thinking of buying one to replace the Jetta actually...but it really needs a little bit more aggressive styling. There is a little bit too much base Golf in the DNA there for my tastes. But damn, I really still love that car! I have a few coming....I did not want to steal too much thunder from your dream car garage threads. Not sure how to creatively answer the last two, as we seem to keep picking the same vehicles over and over.- 11 replies

Anyone Watching HBO's Westworld??
A Horse With No Name replied to Frisky Dingo's topic in The Lounge
We watch very little TV. Actually, I have never turned mine on....I have a state electrical license as a master electrician....I may be the only Master electrician who couldn't tell you how to turn on his TV set on the planet... And I am passing no judgement on people who watch TV. I used to really love Fiction, but a few years ago something snapped in my mind and I have been unable to enjoy fiction of almost any sort (books, movies, drama, stories by the camp fire) since then. Buggers me that I cannot figure out what changed. Did go and see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and enjoyed that. maybe I will try some fantasy. -
You have more energy than I do. By 9:00 at night, jazz is playing, I am burning a candle, and getting ready for bed. I find music helps.... I love this era of Ford trucks. I fondly remember them from when I was a child.

Fiat News: FCA To Cut Prices of Fiat Vehicles In U.S.
A Horse With No Name replied to William Maley's topic in Fiat
I kind of doubt FCA corporate culture allows much introspection or creative dialogue. They seem like a very top down "we have always done it this way" kind of organization. Ford and GM seem much more adaptable....but VW in my mind does the same thing in terms of allowing negative group think and a disconnect with reality ruin what could be a fine brand. Again, this is why I said I try to look at things from an overall corporate culture point of view in the Ford Moving Away From One Ford Platform thread. Alan Mulally was not allowed to kill Lincoln for a reason in terms of Fords corporate culture, and fords corporate culture was open to the counter intuitive move of putting money into Lincoln which has gained then quite a few conquest sales....Lincoln is up for the year, and the Conti continues to conquest. I am saying FCA and VW are incapable of rational self examination, and the resulting change...and that is why they are in the shape they are in. -

As much as I would cross the Pacific in a leaky row boat before I woudl say nice things about any car maker...Ford gets it about 85 percent right with the Fiesta. I have no rational basis In reality for saying this but my gut tells me that Ford has something really kind of special in store when they refresh the Fiesta and Focus. It is wildly under rated as a sporty car. Were my wife not threatening to cut me off if I buy a Fiat product, one might be in my driveway. The only blue I want to see in an automotive transaction is World Rally blue on a WRX....I do not wish for my own testicles to become the same shade of blue. -

We will see what will happen. i am not ready to throw the towel in yet, but in terms of passenger cars the fat lady is warming up and getting ready to sing...loudly... Mini has no existential awareness of who they are and what their brand stands for. Even people I know who sell MINI products or work for BMW Finance admit this. Ironically, Tesla may be the only car company in the world that knows exactly who they are and why they exist...Ford in my mind would come in a reasonable second... At this point they are just trying to recover the fixed costs of keeping the plants running IMHO. Trying to tread water until they figure out how to dig themselves out of...or deeper into...the hole they have made for themselves. We are willing to accept them in low numbers as niche vehicles, where they already have products designed and selling in Europe they can sell here with minimal investment. But they are stoned silly if they think these models will ever get mainstream acceptance. -
Yeah, I am trying to limit the number of vehicles I own to two. Trying to save money to see a few parts of Europe and South America, also I have 4 (yeah four) children in College, all of whom I am helping in one way or another.

Dodge Charger also has one of the highest rated of depreciation of any North American passenger car. -

People always talk about how much fun expensive cars are, but wheeling and autocr4oss are probably the safest and most fun ways to entertain yourself with a vehicle. An old Cherokee or Miata can easily be purchased for less than 5 grand, and wheelers and autocrossers seem to be almost universally friendly if you find a good group. I want to try rally cross, which is autocross on Dirt. Hard on the car, but lots of fun.

I thought of you Saturday....someone traded in an old late 70's/early 80's land cruiser at the local Toyota dealership...thing was in nice shape...it was leaving the dealership on a car carrier headed somewhere last I knew... Not much of an SUV guy myself but between you and Dfelt you all have me thinking...

Sadly it is such a depreciation magnet that it will loose its arse financially after you buy it...limiting production and selling it as a boutique vehicle could keep it profitable. Instead, Chrysler's philosophy seems to be we loose money on every passenger car we sell but make up for it in volume. -

It belongs on a list of vehicles that are pretty much above everything else in their class, like the Fiesta ST, WRX, Raptor, Ford GT, Ferrari 458 Italia, et al....we ought to start a list like that in the lounge.... And yes to your tires comment...which is why I previously commented about tires on your older one...- 11 replies

I think we will see a major reshuffling when we go to electric cars. Give the current auto market until 2030, 2035 at the latest. China and Germany will lead, and at some point electric will hit critical mass in the USA. At that point, all bets are off. We are whistling by the graveside of everyone from Buick to Mazda IMHO. Because I think that electric will be a slate wiper in terms of how cars are perceived, purchased, driven, et al. Consider also that the world keeps changing to being more and more urban. At some point, inter city rail will be a big thing, even in the United states...and the United states will fight that like crazy for the next 50 years...people will no longer drive 450 miles to get somewhere. Or at least not in the quantity they do now.
