What Would You Buy Instead: BMW M4 Competition Edition
A Horse With No Name replied to Frisky Dingo's topic in The Lounge
These threads assume that we want to spend 75 grand fora new car. 75 grand will buy me a lot of things car wise, where I would spend my money is not in the new market. No, sadly.... Shows how little real appeal the M4 has when we all try to buy an American (or American ish) pony car instead. -

As did I! Made in Canada by a joint Italian/American venture on a platform that was designed by German engineers back in the day. Your sex kitten says Eh, drinks Molsen and watches Toronto and Montreal play Hockey. -

I see a good bit of both, actually. But the point is made. When I visit the Porsche dealership, I tell them that I am not their clientele, and they are happy that I am being honest with them. Sadly, I turned down a really clean air cooled 911 that was within budget back a few years ago when they were still cheap. Maybe I should have listened to the guy... -

Ohhh yes it is. Thinking I might want something a little more raw for my next car, but dollar for dollar it is one of the best cars on the planet. -

One of the guys I used to autocross with went to Cincinnati and paid cash for a boss 302 Mustang when they first came out...because he was bored and wanted another car. Tom already owned a CTS-V, a new Z06 Corvette, and a couple of other toys. He also kept a lawyer on retainer because he liked to drive fast. Right after he got the Boss 302 he got nailed by the Ohio Highway State patrol for doing 155 on I-70. Yeah, not normal blue collar guys.... Car guys come in all flavors. One guy I know lives in a rather modest 1000 square foot house, plays with his cars and saves money every paycheck. His wife and three kids don't mind living in a small house, and he has money for his toys. -

Sounds like you are into my era of performance cars. 93 Cobra would be an awesome car, i wanted to find a decent 93 GT a few years back and clone an R cobra as a weekend toy. I never got around to that....recession of 08 hit and then it got harder and harder to find decent unrwrecked and un rusted fox body Mustangs at decent prices. Definitely love the 3rd gen F body also. Without a doubt....VW just released a GTI in Europe that outran the Hellcat around the ring. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/videos/a29835/watch-a-challenger-hellcat-get-creamed-by-a-volkswagen-golf/ Golf R, not GTI, Hellcat getting beat.... http://www.carscoops.com/2016/05/new-vw-golf-gti-clubsport-s-smashes-fwd.html Nuremberg Ring story about the GTI and Hellcat. -

Which is why I usually buy gently used. Yes, the GTR bubble will burst, which is why I woudl buy a WRX. Values have held steady for a decade and a half... -

Will have to disagree with you both here. I am going to stay with the hellcat...and I have been the traditional anti Chryco guy here at C and G for a long time...visually....I love the Hellcat! If I ever won the lottery, ti would be a GTI or a WRX, and then i will travel the world. -

I can relate to this. For me, it is more the social group you buy into when you get a car, and the Porsche Club guys are almost without an exception fantastic people. -

Honestly, i would take this over the BMW And I owe you an apology if I seemed to dis on the Caymen. I was an SCCA member for years and sued to race (autocross) with the Porsche club. It is a really, really fantastic car. I have come close to pulling the trigger on a used example or two myself.... -

My next door neighbors got one after Chrysler sold them a Lemon Dodge journey. They have three small children and it has worked out very, very well for them. Dislike the CVT, but like how solid Subaru's feel with things like power window switches and door latches. But the only Subaru's I think I could actually put real coin on are the BRZ and WRX. -
I do not like the styling on the new car as much as I liked it on the old one.

To each his own. I do like the looks of the ATS better, and I am not by any means a total GM fanboi. Cayman is a wonderful car, but it leaves me just slightly cold. There are a LOT of other performance cars i woudl choose over a Cayman. Everything from a Shelby GT 350 R to a BRZ with a performance package. YMMV. But yes, I would probably take the driving dynamics of the Cayman over the ATS! But if I were to answer to actual question...GT350 R cannot be made expensive enough to buy for this thread...so my money would be on the RC-F -

For me I enjoy driving performance cars and they have wildly better re sale. Price a 2005 WRX and anything Nissan built in 2005. And the GTI has a Cult following. -
Even seasoned auto makers like VW struggle endlessly. If anything, I see fewer car makers, not more.

Yes, buy a Mazda 3 or a Cruze. You do not often see Nissans around here with that kind of mileage. MK IV Jettas seem to reproduce in the seedier sides of town, much like cockroaches. I expect one to be parked next to a W body Imapala when the sun finally burns out. And this is the Rub, the GTI can be had for marginally more money, as can the WRX. Resale is very good on older STI's, and stellar on the WRX. The Nissan will be worth a good Pizza dinner and a couple of beers in eight to ten years. -

No price ceiling, but I want to know color, content, and where you will go on your road trip with it. You are also allowed to modify the ATS, so you could add aftermarket rims to it for all I care. If you desire, one can build a full Pirelli World Challenge Race car out of it. Just make sure the driver finishes ahead of those pesky Porsches rather than behind them, as the races are televised and we want to protect the image of GM.... -
So, given how much fun we seem to have had with the other ultimate dream garage threads, I am going to start another one. Your Crazy uncle is offering to give you a Cadillac ATS brand new free and clear, but it must be the only performance car that you own. This will be a three part question. Part #1, Spec out your ATS and tell us about it! Part #two, you must pick 2 (only two) GM cars built between and including 1975 to 2004. The rub is, no performance vehicles allowed. Corvette is off the table, even if ti is the 305 cubic inch California emissions model. V8 Camaros and Firebirds are off the list with one exception. Fiero is excluded, as is say a Turbo Regal that is not a Grand National, Supercharged or Turbocharged Riviera, Supercharged Bonneville, etc. Celebrity Eurosport or say a Type 10 Cavalier should be fine. Monte Carlo Front wheel drive SS models are not considered performance vehicles for the purpose of this thread, so if you want to pretend to be Dale Earnhardt go ahead. You may have a Camaro of Firebird, but it must come with a factory six cylinder motor and an automatic transmission. You may up the motor size to the max allowed under a regular production vehicle for anything other than a Camaro or Firebird. You may also combine that with any special edition or appearance package, so cars like the 75 Buick Century pace car or the 77 Olds 88 Pace car with the 403 V8 are fair game. You may put a police package on any vehicle, including the Camaro or Firebird. If you get a police package Camaro or Firebird, it will come with lights, siren, period correct radios, gun racks and holsters, spotlights, police paint job and lettering, etc. An Impala or Caprice police package car can be had in any color or option configuration, as these were sued by the FBI, detectives, et al. unmarked. You may modify any vehicle here with a couple of exceptions. It must still look somewhat like the original GM product when you are done, and you cannot radically increase horsepower. In other words, you cannot pull the body off of an Impala, drop a 49 Mercury body on the chassis, and build a 50's era custom. You also cannot drop a 502 big block into a truck because you need the power to turn a set of 44 inch tires in a mud bog. Building a donk, low rider, trail vehicle, competition stereo vehicle for audio competitions, or whatever you want is up to you and you are encouraged to use your imagination. You can cut the roof off of a two door Imapla and make a convertible out of it for all I care. You may also modify the car for handling or racing, such as autocross use. You may also build a full race car out of it so long as the motor and transmission remain stock. Local stock car track, before it went out of business, had a class called crazy compacts that raced J body Cavaliers and Sunfires. They were required to leave the motor unmodified, and this type of use is permitted in this thread. Part # three...take each car on a road trip and tell us where you go! Buick pace car for Era correct inspiration! Oh and a note about police package Camaro/Firebird-it must remain in mostly as delivered condition. We will also assume that it is legal for you to have and operate this in your local municipality for the purposes of display and enjoyment with the slights and lettering attached. Good luck!
