Industry News: Midsize Sedans Are Experiencing Sales Freefall
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Industry News
It's just wagon madness all over again, but this time they're a bit taller and have AWD. AMC Eagle and the Dodge Colt Vista were ahead of their time. Only Subaru can really sell wagons these days, but over at Chevy, give the Sonic hatchback a 2 inch lift, AWD, and a new name, and suddenly Chevy can sell basically the same vehicle for $5k more. (The Trax shares platform, engine, transmission, and a substantial chunk of its interior bits with the Sonic). Lux up the interior a bit, use nicer soft touch buttons from the Astra, and some active noise control, and Buick can sell it for $10k, $15k, or $20k more. Do you really blame auto manufacturers for going this route?- 83 replies

Sad to see the LX platform go. I really like the Chrysler 300 in Hemi form.

Question of the Day: Bare minimum acceptable horsepower?
Drew Dowdell replied to ccap41's topic in The Lounge
The Pontiac G6 with the 6-speed manual and the more torquey 3900 was a 6.2 second car, so your estimate doesn't sound far off. The 3500 + 6-speed auto would be mid-7s most likely. -
Malibu, outgoing version, probably 2015 - review of rental
Drew Dowdell replied to trinacriabob's topic in Reader Reviews
nice write up. I could never warm up to these. the 2.5 just doesn't seem as torquey as the 2.4 and it usually sounds pretty bad going about its business. -
I'm sure both of them are ecstatic at the news.
-
They'll give them loans and other assistance, but no, it's a major expense for the dealerhips
-
Because that's the dealer's job...

There as a Chrysler Jeep dealer near me that got shut down during the bankruptcies..... They still had AMC/Eagle/Plymouth/Imports by Dodge, signs up just above their banner that protested being shut down by Chrysler.
-
The new ones are.... the one that still have Cadillac Oldsmobile Saab GMC signage up not so much.

I lot of current GM dealerships were built in the 60s and 70s.... their heyday....and haven't been upgraded substantially since.

Question of the Day: Bare minimum acceptable horsepower?
Drew Dowdell replied to ccap41's topic in The Lounge
If course how you use it matters. But all these people running around saying they *have* to have 300+ horsepower in a 3,800 lb sedan make me laugh. I keep up with traffic just fine with 148hp.... but it's because I have so much torque.... and my car does it without breaking a sweat. I don't have a tach, but I bet I rarely ever exceed 3500 rpm. -
I like the front and rear ends better than the Chevy version. Maybe we can get a luxury version here and call it the Buick Electra (finally)

Question of the Day: Bare minimum acceptable horsepower?
Drew Dowdell replied to ccap41's topic in The Lounge
It's always about the torque. My 3,800 lb coupe only has 148hp. Yes it's slow if you're trying to drag race it, but it's secret weapon is the 250 lb-ft of torque that comes on at like 1,200 rpm and a low first gear. That means that while you may beat me to 60 if we're racing, I'm still often pulling away from you in normal traffic with nothing more than a mild purr under the hood while you're reving your 200hp 4-cylinder up over 4,000 rpm just to keep up with me. I pretty much ignore horsepower claims these days. -

Horsepower is a marketing ploy dreamed up by evil capitalists... Wake me when there is a thread about minimum torque @ rpm. -
Cool for Lincoln.... Somehow I'm surprised yet also not surprised at Acura's placing....

Fiat News: Rumorpile: A Fiat 124 Coupe Is Said To Be In the Works
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Fiat
I'll let you know when I drive it next month. That said, I've driven the same engine in the Renegade and I felt it was actually the better choice over the 2.4 Tigershark. In the 500 Abarth, it's louder, but plenty sporty. If you're going to drive it like a grandma and barely hit the gas, then it's going to react like a grandma.... Spin the thing up... that's what sports cars are for... not loafing around at 1,700 rpm. -

Sure... and when you do so, you downshift, not leave it in an upper gear. -

So wait, test it in a manner that no sane driver would drive... And it fails... Go figure.. -

The 1.4T is in many Jeep Renegades and Dodge Darts..... it's the engine that people don't complain about.... the 2.4 is the awful one, but that came from a Chrysler/Hyundai/Mitsubishi collaboration, so it's hardly surprising.
