Not much modernization required. By the time they quit making them in Mexico, the Beetle was fuel injected, had a catlytic converter and electronic ignition. The only thing they would really have to modernize is the emissions system, I doubt ZLEV status is possible with the ancient H4, but I bet it could be far cleaner than anything Tata or Chery could come out with.

In December 2008, GM reported deliveries of 221,983 vehicles. In the 2008 calender year, VW reported 223,128. I dont think VW is planning on dominating GM and Toyota in the U.S. Its going to be Europe, Africa and the non-Japanese, non-Korean parts of Asia where VW is going to look for sales. Places whose drivers dont require 27-way adjustable seats, or power windows, or turbos, or 9-speed automatics. Hell, they could dust off the classic Beetle, put it back into production, and sell a million of them a year in China and India.

How does VW plan to pass GM when they dont have a single RWD V8 sedan with cash on the hood?

My AE-1 is about as old as I am. My dad got a new camera and gat the Canon to my sister. Then she got a new camera and gave the Canon to me. Its kinda like a family heirloom. And it still takes great pics.

Obviously GM is building too many of them if they're putting almost 11% of the base model's MSRP on the hood to move them.

The Charger sells nearly 7,000/month. Even if half of those are fleet sales, thats still outselling th Pontiac. Shouldn't the G8 be able to outsell something it might actually be compared against?

The one I rode in was a rough ride. And the cargo area is about the same size as the X3.

But couldn't get the G8 within 600 sales of the 5-Series, which had no rebates and a not particularly enticing lease offer. GM sold 1000 more G8s in February than in December, but with $3k on the hood of each of them, thats $3,000,000 GM just gave away. That doesn't help the company.

The X5 rides rough and has no cargo space.

Anybody else notice that G8 sales increased when the rebates ramped up?

I'll happily take a look at cold-hard facts (not antecdotal evidence) that says 5 buyers are flocking to Pontiac. The G8 isn't selling 10k/month or even 5k per month or even 3k per month. And there is $3,000 on the G8's hood. It isn't a profit machine, and it isn't going to save the brand or the company.

I bet that if the G8 were a Chevy or Buick, it wouldn't have been outsold by Dodge's coupe. I'll be interested to see how thing go for the Pony Car Trio over the next 3 years. I have very little faith the Camaro is going to maintain strong sales. The Mustang is the one I can see keeping its sales, up because it has the track record, even if it has been propped by fleet sales. I dont know what to think about the future of the Challenger, simply because we dont know whats going to be going on with Chrysler over the next few years.

Wish I could have gotten mine for $14,500.

G8 sales are increasing, but still below the much more expensive BMW 5-Series that C&Gers like to say is half the car the Poncho is. The 528i starts at almost $5000 more than a loaded G8 GXP. And the brand as a whole is down huge. What part of that is good news?

This thread is titled "The truth about the G8" yet the second post in the thread is, at best, dishonest, at worst a flat-out deceptive lie. The G8 is a fine car, but its not going to save Pontiac, or GM.
