    2017 Jeep Compass Replaces Two Models With One

    Jeep's compact crossovers, the Compass and Patriot, were never the vehicles they could have been. The poor powertrains, questionable interiors, and lack of features kept them well behind the pack. Yet, these two models were big sellers, but that might due to big discounts on offer. Earlier this year, Jeep unveiled the replacement for the two models, the 2017 Compass which appears to be a big improvement.

    The Compass' new design is a mashup of the larger Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. The front end features the iconic seven-slot grille and a similar headlight design to the Grand Cherokee. The side profile shows off sculpting along the doors and bulging fenders. In terms of size, the new Compass is about two inches shorter than the outgoing Compass/Patriot, but is about the same in terms of width and height. 

    The interior is a huge step forward with ideas taken from the Renegade and Cherokee. Three UConnect systems will be offer, ranging in size from 5 to 8.4 inches. Interestingly, the Compass offers more cargo space than the larger Cherokee. With the rear seats up, the Compass offers 27 cubic feet of space vs the 25 found in the Cherokee. Fold the rear seats and Compass offers five more cubic feet than the Cherokee (60 vs. 55).

    There will be only engine on offer for the U.S.-Spec Compass; the 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual comes standard for either front-wheel or 4x4 models. Automatics are available as an option; six-speeds for front-wheel drive models and nine-speeds for 4x4 models. Most Compass 4x4 models will get Jeep Active Drive which acts like most all-wheel drive systems - sending power to the front wheels until there is a loss of traction and power is sent to the rear wheels. Opt for the Compass Trailhawk and you'll get Active Drive Low - a full-time 4x4 system with a 20:1 crawl ratio. Both systems come with Jeep's Selec-Terrain that adjust various powertrain and 4x4 systems to whatever terrain you find yourself on.

    No word on when the Compass will go on sale.

    I think it looks GREAT! I'm just not a huge fan of a n/a 4 banger matched to a 9spd.. aren't their issues with that combination now?

    I think so...would love this with a manual.  I wonder if getting a manual messes up the tow rating on this?

    That combination has been improving over time. Last one I drove - Fiat 500X - had no issues.

    FCA has pretty well worked all the issues out.  16+ models are a HUGE difference compared to the 14 to 15s with the 9 speed.  I was hoping for the new Turbo 4, maybe later though since I am sure the lions share of initial production will go to the Wrangler.

    Looks like a huge improvement, I like it quite a bit.  Should be a good value.  The next Cherokee needs to step up its packaging to separate itself and be a better family vehicle.

    One rumor on Allpar is that the Cherokee will move to the Giorgio platform when redesigned. Apparently, there will be no more products on the CUSW platform (excluding the Pacifica and maybe a large crossover which supposedly are loosely based upon CUSW).

    No issues that I've experienced lately.  I feel like FCA must have made some running changes to the Cherokee setup because it feels smoother and quieter than I remember.  I had a trailhawk 4-cylinder for a week when I was in Houston last time and it was good fun to drive around.

    Cherokee is 8" longer than the Compass.

    Last time I checked out the Cherokee with a friend shopping CUVs I was surprised how small the cargo area seemed for the size of the car.  It definitely seemed unusually small for the class of vehicle, more like a hatchback that was a foot shorter in length and narrower.  It was a deal breaker for them.

    Probably improve it, most of the global car makers are stiffening the chassis and unibody a good bit with their global architecture.

    A good case in point is how much better the MK 7 GTI is than the MK 6 GTI.  Subaru also really improved the stiffness with the latest Impreza and WRX models also.

    Also of note, I think car makers should stick to building things they are passionate about....and Chryco/Fiat is passionate about Jeep. I think they will nail the execution on this one.

    Considering that Jeeps have more actual towing capacity than many of their competitors, that would also be a plus...

    Only the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee... and even then only with pricey tow prop options... the rest are fairly standard.

    I was thinking other end, Renegade will tow 2000, most other cute utes will not tow at all.

    I think this is better looking than the Cherokee, and oddly enough it's not really that far away in terms of cargo space and combined legroom.

     

    If only they could swap the exteriors, make this exterior just a little larger...ahhhh so much better than that really weird mug the Cherokee has.

    Yeah, I am trying to limit the number of vehicles I own to two. Trying to save money to see a few parts of Europe and South America, also I have 4 (yeah four) children in College, all of whom I am helping in one way or another.

    Dang, and here am I worrying about one......Funny (but cool! :)) Looking to do the same thing, as I would like to see Europe and certain places in Canada in the future here. Figuring on a new family truckster (Nox, Escape) updating heaving on the current DDs, and tinker with the Cav. then just replace the DDS as they go......

      Genesis unveiled their dramatically redesigned G80 last night and it is quite the looker.
      The updated mid-size sedan boasts new design traits that first appeared on the GV80 crossover such as a larger, pentagonal grille and quad head and taillights. The most striking part is towards the back where Genesis' designers have given it fastback shape - no, it doesn't make it hatchback before you even ask.
      Moving inside, the G80 finds a balance between poshness and simplicity. From the photos provided by Genesis, the G80 looks to be available with leather upholstery, open-pore wood, and metal trim. Two large screens are used for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Thankfully, Genesis does provide a number of control options such as touchscreen for the infotainment system, a number of physical buttons and knobs for various systems, and a controller knob.
      Two turbocharged engines will be available for the G80 in the U.S. A 2.5L inline-four pumping out 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque will serve as the base engine. One rung up is a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both come paired with an eight-speed automatic and the choice of rear or all-wheel drive.
      The new G80 went on sale today in South Korea and plans to ship it over to the U.S. sometime in the second-half of this year.

Based on the "Beauty of White Space” concept inspired by traditional Korean architecture, priority is placed on the careful balance of personal space with state-of-the-art technology. This allowed the design team to optimize the layout of needed controls with calming, luxurious surfaces.
      Visibility was enhanced by minimizing A-pillar thickness and rearview mirror dimensions, utilizing flag type side mirrors and reducing dashboard height. The resulting ‘panoramic view’ gives the driver a relaxed view of the road ahead and the sense of openness when seated.
      Dividing the steering wheel into lower and upper halves, Genesis distinguishes the upper (panoramic area) and lower part (control area) to optimize intuitive use of the vehicle as well as the view ahead.
      The steering wheel and sleek, thin air vents run across the passenger compartment splitting it into the panoramic area above and the control area below. The number of hard buttons and switches was intentionally kept to a minimum, both for aesthetic purposes and ease of use.
      In the panoramic area, a heads-up display, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment system display necessary information while driving.
      The control area is equipped with an intuitive suite of interfaces: a Genesis integrated controller for HVAC controls, a rotary-operated electronic shift dial and touch-and-write infotainment system.
      G80’s leading interior space has been further developed. Both headroom and legroom were increased by lowering the seating height of the second row, allowing for both more interior room and a more dramatic roofline. Completing the space, the G80 features leather seating and steering wheel surfaces, soft-touch fabrics and coatings as well as open pore wood trim finishes.
      Dynamic Luxury Begins with a Solid Foundation, Powertrain Innovations
      The G80's platform represents a brand-exclusive, third-generation, rear-wheel drive platform with a design that lowers the body and the center of gravity to secure a wider cabin and improved driving stability.

      Genesis unveiled their dramatically redesigned G80 last night and it is quite the looker.
      The updated mid-size sedan boasts new design traits that first appeared on the GV80 crossover such as a larger, pentagonal grille and quad head and taillights. The most striking part is towards the back where Genesis' designers have given it fastback shape - no, it doesn't make it hatchback before you even ask.
      Moving inside, the G80 finds a balance between poshness and simplicity. From the photos provided by Genesis, the G80 looks to be available with leather upholstery, open-pore wood, and metal trim. Two large screens are used for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Thankfully, Genesis does provide a number of control options such as touchscreen for the infotainment system, a number of physical buttons and knobs for various systems, and a controller knob.
      Two turbocharged engines will be available for the G80 in the U.S. A 2.5L inline-four pumping out 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque will serve as the base engine. One rung up is a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both come paired with an eight-speed automatic and the choice of rear or all-wheel drive.
      The new G80 went on sale today in South Korea and plans to ship it over to the U.S. sometime in the second-half of this year.

On up-level models, soft materials cover every surface from the inside of door handles to quilted knee pads that line the lower sides of the console.  The transmission selector is a dial in the center console. The integrated controller can be operated by an onscreen keyboard or by handwritten letters. 
      Trips in the GV80 are designed to be stress-free. It gets equipped with a Road Active Noise Cancellation technology to reduce road noise. The system is one of the advanced and fast responding systems in the world. The electronically controlled suspension with road preview helps maintain a smooth ride by recognizing road imperfections ahead via a front camera.
      The GV80 is based on a unique new rear-wheel drive platform, while all-wheel drive is available.  In South Korea is till be equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine while the U.S. will get a choice between two unspecified turbocharged engines.       At an event in Vail, Colorado today, GMC took the wraps off the 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.  As before, the top of the Yukon lineup will be the Denali trim, but joining the Denali for the first time is the brand's new AT4 trim which is a more off-road ready version.
      The Yukon gets an all-new interior while the Denali gets its own exclusive version. The Denali instrument panel is completely new and there are also unique seats  and four color themes.  Real wood trims with a natural look and texture join with a Denali only leather, hand-stitched interior.  For the driver, there is a 15-inch diagonal multicolor heads-up display.  On the Denali, AT4, and SLT trims, there is an available power sliding center console that allow the console to slide back up to 10 inches offering a large storage area. 
      Joining the lineup is the AT4 version. All GMC nameplates except the Savanna will be getting an AT4 version by the end of this year.  The Yukon AT4 gets a unique front fascia, and body color or dark accents around the outside, and a pair of red recovery hooks on the front.  The AT4 can be ordered with a four-corner air ride adaptive suspension that can raise the vehicle an additional 2-inches. The air ride system also lowers the vehicle 0.75 of an inch when at speed and can lower the vehicle up to two inches for easier ingress and egress. 
      Also included in the Yukon AT4 are at two-speed transfer case, 20-inch wheels, traction select system with off-road mode, hill descent control, skid plats, AT4-exclusive leather appointed seats, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and heated outboard second row seats. 
      The 4th generation of GM's magnetic ride control is available in certain trims. Also available is an electronic limited slip differential. When in 4WD low, the eLSD operates at full lock to prevent wheelslip. 
      The Yukon will offer three engine choices. An all-new version of the 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque is a buy-up option. Standard is the venerable 5.3-liter, updated with new stop/start technology and dynamic fuel management which can allow the vehicle to run on as few a two cylinders.  Additionally, a 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder turbo diesel joins the Yukon for the first time.  No matter which engine is selected, the transmission is a 10-speed automatic activated through GMC's new Electronic Precision Shift push-button selector. 
      Like the recently revealed 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, the Yukon gains 4.9-inches in wheelbase and that leads to a big increase in interior room.

    • Costco gas stations at least here in Washington are open 5am to 9pm 7 days a week. I see long lines usually in the afternoon and early evening. Rarely in the mornings or late night. It is interesting to see the same company trucks come and fill up the costco stations and then go across the street to the Shell and fill up their tanks. As @USA-1 posted link, it is true that not all gas is created equal and you do have farm grade cheap ass gas. Yet with the standards today and the fact that cheaper farm grade gas is also sold at local pumps and clearly marked, not all auto's can handle the cheaper gas especially those blended with ethanol. Costco has their certifications posted at the pumps and online as their detergent gas comes from the same distribution centers and is certified Top Tier and like @ykX stated, I have auto's with 200,000 miles on them running still just fine on Costco gas too. Why the long response to you, is that you HIT THE NAIL on the Head and Costco is on record that the gas is an additional benefit they offer to help their members do one stop shopping, just like tires. It is not about maximizing a profit on every sale but about offering value to the members who then also go in and spend on average $150 per trip into a costco to get stuff. The Business model is about generating profits on large about of turn over at an average of 5% mark up. Yes there are some products brought in that clearly have a much larger mark up, but Costco business model on how they built the business has always been on the average small markup on sales of thousands of units rather than a large markup on a few sales. Costco gas is the same thing, they buy Bulk Top Tier Gas to offer at a small markup to their members as the general public cannot buy gas there. A benefit to membership, unlike a shell, Exxon or Mobil where the franchise owner has a large % markup so that they can make a small profit after they pay all the fees to the oil company. Two different business models, some get suckered into paying crazy high gas prices for the same grade of gas versus others who see the value and benefit from having less outlay in cost. FYI @USA-1 The recommendation from my Cadillac dealership is not the only GM dealership as both the east side Bellevue Chevrolet/Cadillac Dealership where I bought my SS and the Everett Chevrolet Dealership as well as the Everett Buick dealership where my sister bought her Buick all recommend Costco as it is a CERTIFIED TOP TIER GAS SUPPLIER. End of explaining this, I wish you the best paying out much higher gas prices to your local Shell or which ever name gas station you use. Happy your happy with your auto performance on their over priced gas. Like you said you get what you pay for and in your mind you have a superior product. Interesting that my custom tuned SS runs so awesome on Costco Premium gas as it always has required and I am at 140,000 miles on my SS and it runs better now than it did the day I bought it new from the dealership. Seems Costco gas is a quality less expensive product for me.
    • I'm pretty sure Costco sells gas to attempt to drive traffic to their store, not to make much of a profit on it. I've just grown tired of the lineups so I rarely fill up there unless I know it is a quiet time, around 9am on a weekday.    
    • If you keep making these kind of claims, I have one of my own.  For the last 6 years I was putting Costco gas in my G37S and I drove it for over 150k miles in those years (I was putting about 29k miles a year).  The car has now over 190k miles. Engine still runs great.  So lets agree to disagree on Costco gas.
