Nissan Qashqai Officially Unveiled

Posted Image

Nissan’s new QASHQAI is a catalyst for change. A totally new vehicle in a totally new sector of the car market, QASHQAI mixes elegance, agility and sheer ability in one very different package.

The QASHQAI is same size as a Ford Focus yet smaller than a typical compact SUV, and promises the driving comfort and fun of the former with the ability and practicality of the latter.

That's Focus-sized?

The styling sure fooled me. Looks more like a Santa Fe size to me.

It's a little smaller than the Jeep Compass, a little lower than a Hyundai Tucson, and a lot lower than the Element. Most compact crossovers are either much smaller (Ford Ecosport etc.) or bigger. Since the Focus in question a fastback rather than a 2-box hatch the Qashqai is closer in size to small compact wagons such as the Vibe and Spectra5 than a regular 5-door compact.

Distinctive styling? Looks like your average run of the mill sport 'ute...

I guess they gotta make the car sound good and have a splashy intro for it, but I don't see this vehicle revolutionizing anything or being a catalyst for change.

Make a vehicle that runs on uranium or reprocessed MOX plutonium and mechanically gives the finger to bad drivers nearby, AND heats my Pop-Tarts so the pastry is warm and flaky but the filling is just the perfect temperature that doesn't burn the roof my mouth and rear mucuous membranes as I'm typing... and THEN I'll regard it as a catalyst for change.

I'm talking more about the previous Rav4 and CRV. They're pretty small compared to most compact SUVs in the market.

Well, thinking about it.. it's probably much closer to a Kia Sportage in size.

Even though this is similar to the HHR in length, it's more of an SUV type vehicle while the HHR is just a tall Cobalt hatch.

I thought it was smaller than all of those though.

It is:

Dimensionally, QASHQAI sits between C-segment hatchbacks and SUVs. Sitting on a wheelbase of 2630mm, it is 1610mm tall, 1780mm wide and 4310mm long. While the wheelbase and width match average figures for all both types of rival, QASHQAI is about 100mm longer than a typical hatchback but 150mm shorter than a typical SUV. Similarly, it is taller than rival hatchbacks by between 100-150mm yet up to 130mm shorter than an SUV.

Converted to standard figures:

Wheelbase: 103.543307 in

Height: 63.3858268 in

Width: 70.0787402 in

Length: 169.685039 in

Like I said, it's comparable to a Matrix:

Wheelbase: 102.40 in

Height: 61.60 in

Width: 69.90 in

Length: 171.30 in
