Opel Insignia

Interesting..from studying the photos, it looks like the sedan and hatchback have the same roof, rear quarters, doors, and c-pillar shape, differing only in the decklid and hatch..

Nah...look at the cutlines. The fastback seems to have a slightly elongated rear.

The cutlines look the same to me...the difference is in the hatch relative to the decklid, I think.. I couldn't find pics from the same angle..

The roof and rear wings are different between the hatch and sedan, as was the case with each incarnation of the Vectra before it, and the last-generation Ascona/Cavalier before that.

Yeah I don't get that either--I would love to have a rear wiper on my 9-5.

We drove through a big thunderstorm with heavy rain on my commute home a couple days ago. I really wished for a rear wiper because the slope of my rear window causes water to flow more slowly down it. It was difficult to see anything out back.

I wish sedans would come with a rear wiper...I never understood why only hatchbacks and wagons were allowed to have them.

Very few three-box saloons or coupes tend to, because they really don't need them; there's far more spray and dirt coming from the back to dirty a hatchback or estate car's rear window - and more quickly, too - than there is on a three-box shape. The few three-box models with rear wipers we've had over the years were certain models of Honda Preludes in the 80's and 90's, Mitsu Lancer Evos 4 to 9, the European Ford Orion (Escort saloon) in Ghia X trim, and the mk1 93-98 Mondeo saloon as an option on the Ghia version.

Well my cars would certainly benefit from it, it would make driving in the heavy rain much less hazardous.

ocnblu: So if you're saying the Opel Insignia SWB = the NG Pontiac G6; and the Buick Invicta Concept rides on EpII also (is that SWB or LWB?); will Saturn still get its own Insignia?

The Invicta is LWB EPII. I'm not sure where ocnblu read that this is the NG G6?

In this country, we have an enormous variety of both hatchbacks and saloon cars on sale and over the years I've had plenty of experience of them. We also have a a very humid climate, especially over the winter months where mild weather and damp air can result in roads remaining wet for days from morning dew. Drive a three-box saloon and the car's aerodynamics tend to keep the rear window relatively clean because of the bustle of a high boot lid at the back, whereas hatchbacks, estates and liftbacks (hatchbacks and estate cars especially) are often festooned with spray and dirt within a few minutes.

Consequently, three-box designs with rear wipers are exceedingly rare.

They may look like Opels, however I think someone may be testing out a GMNA brand.

Given the GME expert that you claim to be, I'm sure you're aware that with the Insignia's predecessors, the hatchback/fastback was the first variant introduced before the saloon and estate versions. This is simply the hatchback Insignia which will form the bulk of European Insignia sales.
