Parents considering an HHR

Recommended Posts

My parents are car shopping. They're looking at a lot of options, but I convinced them to look at an HHR, as they commute ~30miles each way daily, rarely have other people with them. So, fuel efficiency is a big plus, but they don't want to have to climb down into a small car, and my dad really likes a higher driving position like in a truck. Of course the HHR isn't that high, but it's better. They drove one and liked it pretty well.

I'm under the impression that the HHR has been pretty well refined and a later model (they're looking at a 2010) should be really solid. Anyone aware of any key features to get or avoid?

I've heard nothing bad, either. These are nice little wagons, hopefully their search is over.

Only ever hear good things about them..... and the people who own them tend to love them so much you'll only their HHR from their cold dead fingers.

to bad GM is ending this model... with better gaps like the new bu, the DI engine, a 6speed, maybe a "lite update" ... seems like it could make a great business case. oh well. maybe make the 1.4L turbo the base? so long good idea. :)

HHR is a good vehicle. I think they would likely enjoy it. My friend's mom likes hers. I still have buyers remorse on the Cobalt, not stepping up to get an HHR.

I've done the HHR thing and did not walk away impressed. Mine was a 2006 2LT with 5 speed manual which I bought new and owned until it had 35,000 miles. The gas mileage was fair at best (mid to high 20s being light on the right foot), the front seats are uncomfortable, the brakes warped within 20,000 miles, the cloth seats stain easily, and the vehicle developed rattles galore early on. Besides an issue with the USB plug in (added after wards at the dealer in 2007), the vehicle only went to the shop for brakes warping and rattles.

For the record, you won't find a bigger GM fan than me and since the HHR I still have only owned GM products.

GM makes better products that get just as good gas mileage. My suggestions instead of the HHR would be a Cruze, Malibu or Equinox.
