Ran into trouble with a repair at work today, needed an expensive part, figured the customer would be unhappy....but they were not. Someone tried to break into my work truck while I was running the service call...but they didn't get in, thank you GM!

So two things I could have gotten frustrated and morose about....however....at the age of 46...I am slowly learning to be optomistic.

It is an uphill battle./..

Actually CSPEC's post here on C and g helped me realize how negative I got sometimes....I'm trying to make a real change...

I actually like the cold when I do wood working in the garage...usually a couple of 500 watt lamps will bring the temp from the twenties to the forties...and it's cold enough my wife and children leave me alone.

I don't mind the cold to a point, but the barn is huge and very hard to get any heat into from my 2 kerosene heaters and 2 electric space heaters.

Should be fine as long as I get done over the next few weeks.

Picked up the parts this afternoon - now for the fun part.

Well, I've started. Not too much to report yet, except that there was a distressingly low amount of coolant in the system. And what was there was nasty, which should not be the case. Just a few months back, I replaced the coolant line to the manifold, the thermostat, and the water pump. The coolant was new at that time. The radiator was replaced about a year ago, so any issue are within the engine itself.

Here's hoping that it is the intake gaskets rather than the head gaskets.

I'll be getting a look at the timing chain in about an hour - time to start getting some answers.

Well, the timing chain is defintely full of slack - should have that replaced tonight.

But the big question is the intake gasket/head gasket thing. I know that the intake gaskets are bad, what I don't know yet is if they are responsible for my coolant leak. If not, I'll be diving much deeper than I wanted to into this engine.

I should know tonight or tomorrow.

New timing chain and gears are in, cover is back on with new gaskets, and the balancer is re-installed. Tomorrow I'll re-install the lower pulley and the water pump, and remove the intake manifold.

The new timing chain is very tight, showing me just how worn the old timing set was. Hopefully, that cures the missing and popping through the intake and exhaust - now to solve the coolant issue.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Intake is off, and it isn't too pretty under there. But, the evidence is inconclusive as far as the head gaskets go. The debate now is do I clean it all up and slap it back together, or do I dive in deeper and do the head gaskets?

I'm sleeping on this one.

If you're like most of us, you're going to get really pissed if you don't do the head gaskets and they end up being the problem anyway.

You've got the top end halfway apart already, I'd just unbolt the heads and do it at this point regardless of whether or not it's the issue. If they haven't gone yet, they're probably going to go eventually at this mileage.

The snow interrupted this project and now there is another delay. I have to borrow the special puller to remove the power steering pulley (again) because you can't remove the brackets from the driver's side head without taking the pulley off first. Really annoying since I just did that to replace the power steering pump. I could pull the passenger side head, but then I'd be dead in the water until I get the special puller.

Not to worry, The shift in position happened when tightening the bolts. The timing marks are properly lined up. Interestingly, the position of the marks when the #1 cylinder is at TDC are not adjacent. However, they are in line, and when rotated 180 degrees (on the cam gear) they are adjacent.

Believe me, I checked this quite carefully.

I cleaned-up the intake last night (took hours and isn't perfect yet), will go to borrow the puller today and decide what to do about the heads. Head gaskets are waiting for me at Napa.

I'm a bit frustrated trying to get a handle on machine shop pricing to have my heads done. The local shop I was always familiar with has closed, and there are not many others anywhere nearby.

At any rate, time to head out to the barn and see if I can get something accomplished tonight.
