Opel/Vauxhall News: Opel CEO Talks Up New EV

Recommended Posts

Earlier this week, we reported on the rumor that the Opel Ampera was to go away once the next-generation Chevrolet Volt was introduced. Well it seems to be true. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann tweeted that the Ampera is on its way out. But another electric vehicle will take it place in the future.

"After the eventual run-out of the current generation Ampera, we'll introduce a successor product in the electric vehicle segment. Our next electric vehicle will be part of our massive product offensive – with 27 new vehicles in the 2014-2018 time frame. We see eMobility as important part of the mobility of tomorrow and we will continue to drive down costs & deliver affordability," Neumann said on twitter.

So what could this new EV be? Autoblog Green speculates it will not be the Chevrolet Spark EV, but something completely different. Stay tuned.

I hope so too.  It is well past time GM shift straight into a pure EV to compete against Tesla rather than the Volt/ELR/Ampera set.  An EV would be simpler to build and maintain than any hybrid.

I actually wish they would take the Tesla style of 200 mile range and keep a generator so that you get a decent 400-600 mile range out of the auto or longer. That would really help move people away from traditional gas only powered auto's.

I believe the VOLT powertrain would be best used in CUV/SUV applications.

I wish the CAFE standards were canned and drill baby drill. Nothing beats gasoline, for energy output . Electric isn't bad by itself but to drive out V8's because of stupid global warming fallacies is mind blowing. more  smaller cars mean more dead people. I hate small cars and prefer high performance large sedans & coupes.

The facts behind global climate change aren't even up for debate anymore.  Just because you can find a couple Exxon sponsored scientists who will attempt to refute the facts doesn't make the other 98% of scientists wrong.

Small cars can be made safe, the Chevy Sonic and Buick Encore are two that I can think of off the top of my head that have excellent crash test results.

BTW, the fastest land vehicles in the world are electric and a Telsa Roadster can walk away from an Audi R8 like it's standing still.
