Porsche News: Porsche Ponders More Electric Vehicles

The production version of Porsche's Mission E will be arriving in 2019 and has the company wondering about expanding their electric lineup.

Porsche division chief Oliver Blume told Bloomberg at the Shanghai auto show that the Mission E brought a shift in thinking for the company.

“It’s more than just the need to comply with rules. We find the technology as such interesting, as electric cars allow a very sporty driving experience, which fits well with the core value of our brand,” said Blume.

The acceleration capabilities of electric motors has Porsche thinking about how they could integrate them into their lineup. One is by building out a group of EVs and the other is expanding their lineup of plug-in hybrids - currently comprised of the Cayenne and Panamera.

Vehicles like the Mission E will play a key role in markets such as China where restrictions on emissions are expected to become the world's toughest in the coming years.

China's own EPA version of EV sales per year starting in 2019 are going to force all companies to invest in EVs. Trump is not going to have any affect on companies move towards EV as the rest of the world is moving forward. The US will need to follow.

At the 2017 Shanghai auto show, Buick introduced the Velite 5, a rebadged Chevrolet Volt made specifically for the Chinese market.

Featuring the same Voltec powertrain as in the Volt that combines two electric motors, a T-shaped lithium-ion battery mounted low, an electronically variable automatic transmission, and a 1.5-liter I-4 that serves as a range extender, Buick says the Velite 5 can travel up to 116 kilometers (72 miles) in EV mode or 768 kilometers (477 miles) with a full charge and a full tank of gas. It’s unclear, however, what standard the automaker is basing its range estimates on. In the EPA cycle, the Chevrolet Volt is rated at 53 miles in EV mode and 420 miles with a full tank of gas and a full charge.

 

72 miles for China while in the US its 53 miles...

About EVs....the tipping point is near.

Porsche is seeing it....hell, GM is seeing too...that is why the Buick version in China gets an upgrade unlike in Europe with the Opel Anterra and in the US...

The irony is that just a week or two BEFORE Opel was sold, the President of Opel wanted to go full out EV for Opel because even in Germany....laws are put into place to ban Diesels in the very near future and petrol cars in the not so distant future....

Actually, other European countries are banning diesels too....Including Greece...(by 2025 and for their  major  cities only as a start)

Oil based propulsion for cars are coming to an end...governments are pushing this unto us....(is it really that awful to be driving EVs?) (Infrastructure and charging times are in the next 2 years NOT gonna be a factor just like range is not a problem as of NOW....Bullshyte excuses aside)

Good points all around, the EVs are coming.  The air quality problems in china will push them to EV, Europe is going there too.  And one the EVs are more viable in 5-10 years I bet the displacement taxes go up in China to kill off engines over 2 liters.

Porsche needs to get on the electric SUV bandwagon and they can share engineering with Audi and Bentley which makes it pretty easy.   The 911 can work as an electric car too they can still put the motor in the back.

Interesting question that comes up with your 911 comment is that yes, it could be a plugin hybrid, electric motors on both front and rear axle with a generator in the back. Will Porsche be willing to build them in china? This way they get credit for a plugin hybrid as anything built outside of China is not considered a hybrid even when it is.

True, but to a very limited plan that the public is aware of compare to what other OEM's have announced and are stating to have in the next 5 years.

Yes they have been investing long term, but we have seen very little for the so called long term investment and it would help them to market their long term thinking of how they plan to capitalize on the Volt and Bolt Systems.
