Audi achieves second best month for U.S. sales with 11% gain in May 2015 June 02, 2015 | HERNDON, Virginia Audi sales YTD through May up 11.7% to 75,353 vehicles Best month ever for Audi A3 sedan, A3 Cabriolet Demand for Audi SUV models increased 36.7% for the month Audi reported that its May 2015 sales increased 11.0% to 18,428 vehicles, a total that stands as the second-best month since the brand entered the U.S. market in 1970. May was also the 53rd consecutive month of record U.S. Audi sales. The previous May record was set in 2014 with sales of 16,601 vehicles. The best month Audi has seen in the U.S. market came in December 2014 with sales of 19,238 cars and SUVs. Through the first five months of 2015, Audi U.S. sales rose 11.7% from last year to 75,353 vehicles. A key driver of Audi sales gains for the month was the significant increase in demand for the A3 and S3 models that form the base of the Audi product lineup. May 2015 was best month on record for the A3 and S3 sedan models with 3,035 cars sold, as well as for the A3 Cabriolet with 458 cars sold. Combined, the 3,493 A3 and S3 sales trailed only the 4,280 sales of the popular Audi Q5 and SQ5 crossovers in the Audi results. “A year after launching the new A3 models, we are seeing payoff from our bold decision to reimagine a key component of the Audi lineup and take advantage of a luxury car segment poised to take off,” said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. “The record sales for the A3 and S3 sedans, along with the A3 Cabriolet, show this was a risk well worth taking. And we aren’t done yet with the all-new A3 Sportback e-tron coming this fall as the first plug-in Audi.” May represented strong demand for Audi luxury SUVs with a 36.7% increase in May sales encompassing the Audi Q3, Q5 and Q7 models. The Q5 posted an 11.6% increase from a year earlier, and the Q7 posted a 25.3% increase from last May. The Audi Q3 wasn’t available in May 2014. GM’s Sales Beat Analyst Expectations, Buck Industry Trend Total sales up 3 percent, retail deliveries up 7 percent Chevrolet pickups up 30 percent: Silverado gains 3 points of retail market share; Colorado still the fastest-selling pickup GMC up 12 percent as crossovers and pickups surge Commercial deliveries up for the 19th consecutive month DETROIT – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers in the United States delivered 293,097 vehicles in May 2015, for General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) best May sales since 2007 and its best month since August 2008. Total sales were up 3 percent year over year and retail sales were up 7 percent in a month when most major competitors lost ground. Pickup trucks and crossovers were especially strong sellers. “Chevrolet has the hot hand in the pickup market thanks to our three-truck strategy,” said Kurt McNeil, General Motors’ U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “Our market share is growing and our strategy is to retain these customers with the best overall ownership experience.” The Chevrolet Silverado’s estimated retail segment share was 27 percent in May, according to J.D. Power PIN data, up 3 percentage points year over year. Calendar year to date, the truck’s retail segment share is 26 percent, up 1 percentage point. Demand for the all-new Colorado midsize pickup is rising faster than GM’s ability to increase production, even with the addition of a third production shift in March. With 8,881 sales in May, the Colorado controls about one-quarter of the retail market for midsize pickups and it has been the industry’s fastest-selling pickup for four consecutive months. Its “days to turn” is only 13 days, according to PIN, and retail inventory is 11 days. Demand is also soaring for Chevrolet crossovers, which had their best sales ever in May. The Equinox was up 30 percent compared to a year ago and the Traverse rose 2 percent. Retail deliveries for the Equinox and Traverse were up 15 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The all-new Trax small crossover also continues to gain momentum, with 5,707 deliveries. Growth at GMC, which focuses exclusively on trucks and crossovers, is far outpacing the industry. The brand had its best May since 2005, up 12 percent year over year. The GMC Sierra was up 4 percent. Terrain had its best May sales ever, with sales up 11 percent, the Acadia had its best month ever, with sales up 67 percent, and the new Canyon contributed 2,901 units. Calendar year to date, GMC sales are up 15 percent. Additional Highlights vs. 2014 (except as noted) Chevrolet Chevrolet pickup sales totaled 60,483 units, up 30 percent. Silverado deliveries were up 11 percent and the Colorado had its best month since launch. Sonic deliveries were up 3 percent, Malibu was up 11 percent and Corvette was up 6 percent, for its best May since 1986. Chevrolet continued to have the lowest passenger car incentives in the industry on average transaction price (ATP) basis compared to other full-line manufacturers, according to PIN. Cadillac The SRX saw a 21-percent increase and Escalade sales were up 6 percent. GMC GMC pickup sales were up 19 percent, and the Sierra and Canyon have the highest ATPs in their respective segments, according to PIN. Buick Buick sales were up. Enclave deliveries were up 23 percent and the Encore was up 21 percent, for its 17th consecutive year-over-year sales increase. Fleet and Commercial Commercial deliveries were up 5 percent in May, with full-size pickups up 9 percent. Deliveries of medium crossovers and the Chevrolet Malibu more than doubled. Through May, commercial deliveries have grown year over year for 19 consecutive months and they are up 24 percent calendar year to date. State and local government sales were up 29 percent in May, and 23 percent calendar year to date. GM’s total sales increase in May came despite a planned 7,000-unit decline in rental deliveries. The decline reflects the discontinuation of the fleet-only Chevrolet Captiva, as well as lower production of the fleet-only Chevrolet Impala Limited and lower sales of large SUVs. June rental deliveries are planned to be down more than 20,000 units, year over year. GM is prioritizing retail deliveries of large SUVs due to strong demand and low inventories, which currently stand at 62 days supply. General Motors May ATPs were approximately $34,000, up $550 per unit year over year, according to PIN. They are up about $1,300 calendar year to date. Incentive spending as a percentage of ATPs was 10.6 percent in May, equal to a year ago, according to PIN. Industry average spending was 10 percent of ATPs, also equal to a year ago. GM estimates that the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles in May was 17.6 million units, above GM’s full-year outlook of 16.5 million to 17.0 million units.

Imagine getting into a new vehicle with a payment that could range $39 to $99 per month. Seem like a fantasy? Well that is what a number of Volkswagen dealers across the U.S. are doing. An example is a Volkswagen dealer offering an $89 36 month lease on Jetta, after you hand over $2,500 as a down-payment. It's part of an effort by Volkswagen to bring customers in now at a loss to have hopefully return in three years when the automaker will have a brand new lineup. 2018 will see Volkswagen in the beginning stages of their plans to introducing new products every five years - a seven-seat crossover is the first - and refreshing their product lineup every three years. But even with this move, the question remains if this will help Volkswagen or not? Sales in the U.S. have dropped in the past two years, despite the overall market seeing growth. So at the start of this year, I decided to start reading through my collection of books that are only taking up the limited space in my closet and gathering up dust. At the current time, I have finished about 12 to 15 books and a few I have come across from the library. It has reignited my love of reading, something that was going extinct due to current work I deal with. Its nice to get back and read.

I should look into that.

Prices of new vehicles are climbing to record highs and causing buyers to look at leases for lower monthly payments. According to CNBC, a new report from Experian Automotive found that 31.46 percent of vehicles sold in the first quarter were leased. This is up from the 24.05 percent who chose to lease five years ago. The report also reveals that that the average monthly payment for a new vehicle loan was $488, up $14. But, the average lease payment was down $7 to $405. "The difference between a monthly payment for those leasing a new vehicle versus those who buy new is almost $100," said Melinda Zabritski, senior director of Experian Automotive. "Leasing has become more popular because the price of vehicles continues to go up. Consumers are looking for lower monthly payments, which is why more of them are extending the terms of their loans." Following in the footsteps of Tesla and Toyota, Ford announced last Friday that it would open up its portfolio of electric and hybrid vehicle patents to competitors to help accelerate the development of these vehicles. Now unlike Tesla and Toyota's programs, Ford is charging a licensing fee. “Innovation is our goal. The way to provide the best technology is through constant development and progress. By sharing our research with other companies, we will accelerate the growth of electrified vehicle technology and deliver even better products to customers,” said Kevin Layden, director of Ford electrification programs. Ford says they have filed 650 electric vehicle patents and about 1,000 pending applications relating to hybrid and plug-in vehicles. Those interested in purchasing one of Ford's patents can either go through the blue oval's technology commercialization and licensing office or through the AutoHarvest Foundation - a nonprofit that Ford help found in 2012. Ford Motor Company is a leader in this area – offering six hybrid or fully electrified vehicles including Ford Focus Electric, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. In total, Ford has more than 650 electrified vehicle patents and approximately 1,000 pending patent applications on electrified vehicle technologies. Ford's innovations have resulted in acclaimed electrified vehicles on the road today, but the company believes sharing its patented technologies will promote faster development of future inventions as all automakers look toward greater opportunities. "As an industry, we need to collaborate while we continue to challenge each other," said Layden. "By sharing ideas, companies can solve bigger challenges and help improve the industry." To access Ford's patents and published patent applications, interested parties can contact the company's technology commercialization and licensing office, or work through AutoHarvest – an automaker collaborative innovation and licensing marketplace. AutoHarvest allows members to showcase capabilities and technologies, then privately connect with fellow inventors to explore technology and business development opportunities of mutual interest. The patents would be available for a fee. "Ford helped launch AutoHarvest as a founding member to enable efficient and transparent technology licensing across the automotive industry and beyond," said Bill Coughlin, president and CEO, Ford Global Technologies, which manages intellectual property for Ford. This innovation extends battery run time and overall life. This is the first invention to enable battery balancing at any time, instead of only while charging, and it enables the use of lithium-ion batteries in electrified vehicles. It was invented long before lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles became commonplace – truly ahead of its time. Temperature Dependent Regenerative Brake System for Electric Vehicle, patent No. US6275763: The technology works to maximize the amount of energy recaptured in a hybrid vehicle through regenerative braking. By improving the interplay between normal friction brakes and regenerative braking during stopping at certain air temperatures, a driver is able to recapture more energy than previously possible, helping the motorist drive farther on a charge. Driving Behavior Feedback Interface, patent No. US8880290: The patent provides a system and method for monitoring driver inputs such as braking and accelerating, and vehicle parameters including energy consumption to assess driving behavior. The feedback can be used to coach future driving behavior that may translate into better long-term driving habits and improve fuel economy. This technology also has enabled drivers of non-electrified vehicles, such as a Ford Focus, to develop better driving habits. View full article

Earlier this month, we reported that Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division was embarking on its next project - a hardcore off-road brand named SVX. At the time, SVO Head David Edwards didn't go into further detail aside from announcing the project. But British publication Autocar has gotten some details about what the first SVX vehicle will be. The report says the first SVX vehicle will be the next-generation Discovery due out sometime next year. The SVX variant will follow a fair bit later and showcase the division's technical as well as mechanical ability on dealing with difficult terrain. Edwards to comment on specific models that are in development, but did say there was a market for these type of vehicles. “There is a market for more off-road capability, so of course we’re looking at it. In the US there’s a wide snowbelt, in the Middle East there’s extreme sand and in regions such as Australia and South Africa there is a need to cover very rugged terrain," said Edwards. “There’s a very interesting market for cars with usable capability,” he said. “The established German luxury competitors are there, but we think there’s an opportunity to offer something different and something more. We’re well planned to develop and exploit opportunities in that marke Source: Autocar View full article
