Highly unlikely unless we manage to find a drop-in replacement for petroleum for everything. If we don't use oil in our cars, we'll still use it in our shampoo bottles... the price of oil won't drop so much that it will drop below the price per mile of Electric.

Exactly! Where are all the "states rights" conservatives on this one? This thread is by necessity going to get political. I'm encouraging everyone here to keep a level head discuss ideas, not people. TL:DR - Don't make it personal

XC40 T5 is not (yet) available as a PHEV, though it is coming. But yes, I did miss the GLCe. The point being, there isn't a lot of choice unless you really have the checkbook to support it. The Mitsu gets you there for a lot less. The GLC and XC40 are a lot smaller as well. The Outlander is bigger

I don't mind the exterior. I think they make it look sufficiently distinct. It's the interior I object to. If it had the off-road capability of a 4-runner or Wrangler like Mitsubishis of old did, I might overlook it.

PHEV + AWD + SUV. For those of us in the snow belt, AWD is a requirement. In the wintertime, AWD is the difference between getting out of my driveway or back up my street in the snow, or not. That means that few hybrids and even fewer PHEVs qualify for consideration even if one is interested in a PHEV. I have a genuine interest in getting a PHEV, but nearly any that I might want will be a compromise of some sort. I'd love an XC90 PHEV which checks all the boxes, but that is a $80k vehicle. The Outlander is much more attainable. 27 way seats verse 30 seats is less of a consideration.

I found the Bolt to be a real hoot to drive. It's got more giddyup than most of the mid-size class base 4-cylinders but not quite as much as the 2.0T and larger crowd, though with better low-end torque than all but the most extreme of Turbo-4s. ... a nice happy medium. I've said it before... put that powertrain in a LaX or Regal or CTS and I'm there.
-
Eh.. only on the seat part. Audi, Mercedes, and soon BMW all do twin-turbo 6es in full-size SUVs and having 27-way seats instead of 30 way isn't generally going to be a deal breaker (unless you're @smk4565). If you're looking for an AWD PHEV of any body style, the choices are few... if you're looking for an SUV specifically, the choices are Mitsubishi, two Volvos, and a BMW.
-
It's the only 3-row PHEV SUV with AWD available for that price. So if that's what you're looking for, it's a segment of one.</fin>

I've been looking forward to this. I think it will make the event double in side eventually. There could be a lot going on with classic cars too. I personally have been wanting to bring my Toronado to Detroit, but the weather always has a high chance of being terrible that I have yet to do it.

Fiat News: Mike Manley To Succeed Sergio Marchionne As FCA CEO
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Fiat
Reliability is an issue for Alfa. I wouldn't put either of their primary vehicles' interiors at an equal quality level to the Germans or even the latest Lincolns. Styling is subjective, but I find them a bit stark.- 15 replies

I have to admit I am also confused as to how this car fits in the Toyota lineup. It's not even attractive nor interesting.... maybe that's how.

I've always wondered how driveable on a sunny day cars like that would be. I have to close the shade on my sunroof often.

Jeep News: Rumorpile: A Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk?!
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Jeep
It's smooth, inexpensive, reliable, delivers good torque, and is reasonably fuel efficient for a V8. WTF is wrong with that? It's also the only way to get a V8 in a sedan at $33k or 370hp in a sedan at $33k. If you're looking for the most horsepower for dollar... Hemi is where its at.- 23 replies

I've never heard of the Rainier getting the 6.0. The TB-SS and the Saab 9-7x did.

Fuel injector or fuel cleaning additives
Drew Dowdell replied to trinacriabob's topic in Tech Section
If you run Top Tier gasoline, there really is no need for additives. EXCEPT for Direct Injected vehicles... those engines do not ever get the detergents in their intake manifolds because it is completely bypassed by the direct injection system. That's where I'd use seafoam at the throttle body, but that is a once a year thing at most. -
Toyota News: Upcoming Toyota Supra To Offer Turbo-Four and Six
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
You're correct that the ES will stick around. I mainly see Lexus doing some platform consolidateion. If the 5, 6, and 7 series can all share a platform, so can GS and LS. An IS could ride on a Supra platform and that would give it some real performance cred. The LX and GX are profit makers since they are just De Lux Toyotas... I'm sure they have among the highest profit margins in the entire Toyota portfolio. They'll find a way to make it work. The LS and LC are new... not sure why you think those have been rotting on the vine.- 18 replies

Fuel injector or fuel cleaning additives
Drew Dowdell replied to trinacriabob's topic in Tech Section
I don't. I buy Costco gasoline almost exclusively which has most of those cleaners in it (much like Shell Premium). I do run a bottle of seafoam through the throttle body from time to time.... this is even more important on direct injected engines. -
Jeep News: Rumorpile: A Grand Wagoneer Trackhawk?!
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Jeep
Exactly zero of those 2-liters will make the torque of the Hemi... at full throttle... at part throttle... A 365hp 5.7 liter is far more drivable than a 356hp 2.0 liter because ZERO LAG. I don't know why it never will sink into your brain.. any motor will make 365 hp if you spin it fast enough. .. that doesn't mean you'd want to drive it. Spin your grandmother fast enough and she'll make 365hp too. Lets assume she can lift 5 pounds at 1 foot reach from her. Do that at about 383,000 rpm and she's cooking up 365hp. This is an extreme example, of course, but would you want to drive a 365hp car with a torque spec like that? That's barely a lawnmower engine. Before you bring up max torque at low RPM, you only get that at full boost which you also only get at full throttle. A 5.7 has more torque available at part throttle than a 2.0T.- 23 replies

Volvo News: To Avoid Tariffs, Volvo Sources XC60s For U.S. From Sweden
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in Volvo
C-Class, Passat, S60, are all built here for US consumption. Where Trump is shooting himself in the foot is with exports. It could cause BMW to rethink future investment in their plant here because it does produce vehicles mostly for export. -
They still track these things in the technological equivalent of CSV files. I've done my own investigation into vehicle flaws and started running into walls because similar vehicles that share parts are often reported separately. I was tracking a dashboard flaw in the GM GMT800s but because the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Sierra, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, and Avalanche are all reported separately, it is difficult if not impossible to see the full extent of the problem.

So, again... why? -
I'm fairly certain what they'll bring over is the Peugot line or DS line which is pretty conventional and could be mistaken for a luxury Kia

Not what I said. But if they did, they'd have a lot of factories to give up. Toyota builds a higher percentage of its vehicles in the US than Buick does. Hyundai and Kia aren't far behind.
