  1. A guy I knew in high school drove a 1984 Olds Delta 88 sedan with ~650,000 miles (1,048,000 km). The E-350 I drove for work had 390,000 miles (629,000 km) on it when I drove it a couple years ago...it's probably added another 30,000 since then.
  2. I have both Bad English and Backlash...pretty good discs, definitely ballad rock but a nice change of pace sometimes. I've never heard anything by Hardline though...what's a good album(s) by them? I just got done listening to Animal by Rogue Male. They were a UK hard rock band that were supposed to be the "next big thing" but quietly faded away after their second album. They almost sound like a hard rock version of the Clash.
  3. I'm a skeptic when it comes to UFOs, but if these are faked then they are DAMN good because they look like something out of a Hollywood movie. They were caught by two different people at two different locations on August 6th, 2007. First video with comments http://www.metacafe.com/watch/761872/ufo_haiti/ First and second videos http://mienfoks.blogspot.com/2007/08/ufos-...t-on-video.html
  4. I think we're entering a second Cold War, but this time its an economic one. As China grows in power, its going to keep flexing its muscles. I don't see much hope for the value of the dollar with the Euro gaining strength and the Yuan / Yen putting pressure on our industry. And the sad thing is, it's just going to keep getting worse the more China develops. How many banks in this country are now Chinese owned?

    Cool rendering

Man, I'd love to see ChryCo bring back some of these old nameplates. GTX, 'Cuda, Roadrunner...even though I know it'll never happen, I wish Plymouth would come back.
  6. Nice pic! The Renaissance Center really does a lot for the Detroit skyline. I think the circular middle tower was originally a Westin Hotel when it opened in the early 70s and it was the tallest hotel in the world at the time. Also, I believe Henry Ford II and FoMoCo had a hand in the development of the RenCen...kinda ironic that it's now GM's HQ.
  7. My hometown I grew up in is 98.5% white, so I didn't get exposed to a lot of diversity as a kid. When I was in school, I could count on one hand how many fellow classmates weren't of a European descent. Iowa's biggest growth of non-European ethnicities has been Hispanic. In a city like Des Moines, you can find about 70% Caucasian, ~15% Hispanic, ~10% African American, and the rest a mix of descents. Small Iowa towns with a large manufacturing base (meatpacking and food service especially) have seen a lot of growth due to Hispanic immigrants. It's sad to see all the gated communities springing up around the country. West Des Moines is littered with them. And even if they aren't the kind where you have to have a security clearance to pass, you still feel like you aren't supposed to be driving through them. But I think this is where a lot of the upper middle-class Maureens are going. You can see the shift in a lot of the inner suburbs..."Maureen" types moving out for the gated homes as minority groups move in. Downtown is so much more vibrant of a place to live. I either want to live in / close to downtown or in an old neighborhood with brick homes and mature trees when I graduate. These homoginized cookie-cutter outer 'burbs aren't really my thing.
  8. Canadians must like those "zeds".
  9. A lot of it is probably due to Ford trucks with the 6.0L Powerstroke. It's also probably why both Chevrolet and Ford are lower...they have many more truck sales than brands like Mercury or Buick, and trucks tend to take more of a beating so they suffer more problems.Likewise, the more Tundras Toyota sells, the farther I expect to see it drop down the list.

  11. Interesting...I always thought it was "Catera Touring Sedan"

  13. Chevy didn't actually drop, it's just that others shot past them. They improved by 15 defects per 100 vehicles.Interesting to note that Lexus went down, as did Acura by a lot. Mercury also dropped some. Improvements in number of problems by brand Buick -8 Lexus +9 Cadillac -1 Mercury +17 Honda -24 Toyota -1 BMW -30 Lincoln -38 Subaru -40 Oldsmobile -28 Jaguar -13 Acura +23 Mercedes-Benz -28 Infiniti 0 Jeep -45 Pontiac -12 Scion -- Ford -3 GMC -17 Chevrolet -15 2007 vs. 2006

  15. It's a '94 EuroReg pretty much hit the nail on the head. It would be me farting around with a book and wasting a day or two trying to do it correctly, probably messing something up along the way. Someday I hope to have a project car that I can work on in my spare time and to learn how to take apart and reassemble an engine, but for my sole mode of transportation that I need running by Tuesday I'd rather just have it done professionally and done right the first time. It hasn't been a money pit at all and she's still got some youth left in her, so $650 seems reasonable for a car that is probably going to go at least another 80,000 miles if my '90 Lumina was any indication.
  16. Makes me want to hop onto a plane to Italy right now. I'm starting to have withdrawls.
  17. Yeah, what's up with capitalizing the first letter of every word? Does it add "credibility" or something?

  19. Zoltar? Poor kid...I can hear the teasing now!
  20. They're probably Prince fans.
  21. Yep, I have Moving Pictures, Power Windows, Roll the Bones, and Chronicles. I've heard their new album is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't heard anything off it yet. Neil Peart is one of the best rock drummers in the business, IMO.
  22. Bob: The Lumina has 122,000 miles on it...I bought it at 80,000 so I've put 42,000 on it over 4 1/2 years. I '92 Caprice for sale is owned by one of the bank presidents here in town, so I'm assuming its in pretty good shape (I haven't seen it personally yet). If the car is in good enough shape, I probably could profit off it since gently-driven Caprices are pretty hot items these days. It sounds like I'll be getting the Lumina fixed though. Too much money has been put into it already and it's probably going to be most economical just to suck it up and pay the $650. BV: I've toyed with that idea, but I don't have the time nor the mechanical confidence to be sure I would do it correctly. It'd be a great summer mini-project for me to learn more about it, but I have to have the car running in less than a week and I've got a ton of things going on before then. The 3.1 in the Lumina is also pretty jammed in there...it'd probably be more trouble than it is worth for a novice.
  23. Right now, either a new or gently used '07 Mustang, possibly a Fusion, and maybe something from the GM stable. It's all up in the air right now...I have to wait until I get a job secured to know how much I'll be able to afford...the place I'm interning at right now is looking like they will have an opening for me when I graduate and they seem to pay pretty decently for starting wages.I'm planning on living close to my job, so I'm not as concerned with gas prices. I'm willing to spend $500-1000 per year more on gas rather than getting a small car or a 4-cylinder. I'm also tall so small cars are out. I like the G8, but I have a feeling it will be out of my range. Another idea is that I buy something used and then wait until the new Impala, GTO, etc. come out in a few years. I really want a RWD, V8 car...bad. Either way, Ford or GM will get a sale.
  24. Well, luckily the "curse" hasn't befell it, but head gasket woes have. I took it to the GM dealer the other day and went to pick it up today and found out that the #5 cylinder has moisture and coolant in it. This is bad timing because I go back to school in a week and they won't be able to to get it in for at least two weeks. Also, the GM dealer here is being bought out by the Ford dealer, so it may end up being serviced over at the Ford dealer costing more money due to higher labor costs there. The GM dealer will repair it for $800, and another place we checked can do it for $650-700. I will be buying a new car in May, so my options are either A) pour $800 into a car I bought for $800 (plus put new brakes on recently), or B) buy something cheap to get me along for 9 months. Right now, we're leaning toward getting it fixed due to the new brakes, fairly new tires, and low mileage (120K), but the idea of a different used car is still being thrown around. There is a '92 Caprice for sale here for $1200, also a '93 LeSabre (not really what I want though). Are blown head gaskets fairly common on 3.1 engines? My last Lumina went 220K miles without one blowing. I know the 3.4 is pretty notorious.
