FCA Dealers Worried About Grand Wagoneer Missing Its Opportunity

      Dealers: Where's that Grand Wagoneer?

Since 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne proclaimed that Jeep needed a three-row luxury SUV to better compete with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. But this SUV, known as the Grand Wagoneer hasn't materialized. Numerous delays and debates about the design has caused the launch to be pushed time and time again. These delays have a number of dealers concerned that Jeep may miss its opportunity with this new model.

"I think our window of opportunity is closing. We could have killed with [the Grand Wagoneer] if it had been available when they first told us about it, but it's a much tougher sell with interest rates and gas prices going up," said an unnamed FCA dealer to Automotive News.

John Murphy, research analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch said last week at a meeting of the Automotive Press Association that the "Goldilocks" era in auto retailing was coming to a close. Murphy said the next five years would be tough on auto sales due to a number of factors, especially for those trying to sell high-end models.

    • Higher interest rates
    • Increasing gas prices
    • Raw materials becoming more expensive
    • Increasing competition in the light-truck sector

The current plan is to launch the Grand Wagoneer in 2019, but production could be pushed back till late in the year or even into 2020. This is due to FCA's plan to keep building the current Ram 1500 at their Warren Truck Plant until the end of year. But depending on demand, this could extend production into 2019, pushing back the time needed to retool the plant for the Grand Wagoneer.

Sergio the MORON has missed his profit window due to Alfa waste. Jeep should focus on their existing products now and get everything Plug-In Hybrid or EV.

They should build a Wagoneer 7 seat SUV to compete with the Pilot/Traverse/Explorer, and a Grand Wagoneer to compete with the Escalade and Navigator and an Ultimate Wagoneer priced at $150,000 with Wrangler off road capability and Maserati level interior with a twin turbo V6, and offer a Ultimate Wagoneer Hellcat for $200,000 and an Ultimate Wagoneer Enzo with a Ferrari V12 for $350,000.

The demand is so high for SUVs all 3 will sell out.

When it comes to any American car marque, Sergio DGAF.  FCA should ideally be broken up and out of Sergio's hands.

Since they have Trailhawk, Trackhawk and Sandhawk coming, maybe future Jeep EV versions will be badged as Electrohawk...

Do not forget the most important one, Rockhawk!

Then for those that like to do it mile high, Milehighhawk! :P

Speaking of Jeep naming, I saw on a Jeep FB page recently the 'Mall Rated' badges as a counterpoint to the 'Trail Rated' badges...

General Motors will be bringing back the Hummer name to sell a new electric truck as part of the GMC lineup.
The Wall Street Journal first broke the news yesterday with GM moving forward on plans to bring Hummer back that was first reported back in June. The report also said that the company would tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James. GM declined to comment.
The decision is likely due to the planned $3 billion investment for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that we reported back in October. The investment is to gear up the plant to build an electric pickup for GMC and an electric Cadillac SUV by 2023. But in 2021, the plant will produce a "low volume BT1 pickup" under a different brand. At the time we speculated that it may be Hummer. This seems to lineup with the reporting done by the Wall Street Journal which says the truck will be similar in design to the Jeep Renegade.
Bloomberg adds that there are plans for a large SUV for Hummer if the truck proves successful according to sources. The sources also say that the company is considering selling the new Hummer truck in existing dealers under the name of “Hummer by GMC.”

Jeep will be bringing a trio of plug-in hybrid variants with them to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month, and along with them, a new badge.  The Jeep Wrangler, Compass, and Renegade will debut in North America wearing a new 4xe badge that will denote their plug-in status.  The SUV's are scheduled for their official debut in New York and Geneva later this year.
Jeep intends to have some form of electrified driving available in its entire lineup by 2022, but it could be in the form of a mild-hybrid eTorque system.  At the moment, Jeep says that all electrified vehicles will carry the new 4xe but it is unclear if that really includes the eTorque models or not.
We've previously seen Compass and Renegade Plug-In hybrids at the Geneva Auto Show in 2019.  In those, the engine is a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 177 hp and 200 lb.-ft of torque on its own. On the Renegade, there are power variants that add additional electric motivation to bring total output to either 190 hp or 240 hp.  The only choice on the Compass is the 240 hp version.  The PHEVs have eAWD, where the rear wheels are powered electrically only and there is no prop shaft from the gasoline engine.  FCA claims the PHEVs can travel up to 31 miles in electric only mode and reach a top speed of 81 mph before the gasoline engine kicks in to help.
We will have more details on the Renegade, Compass, and Wrangler Plug-In hybrids coming soon.

    • Well, I would like to buy a RWD sedan, since I have had FWD sedans for just over 20 years now.  I could either get a lightly used CT6 or a newer Chrysler 300 or pick up a Genesis G80/KIA K900.  If I HAD TO GET a CUV, then a Cadillac XT5 will do nicely.
    • I plan on waiting a few years since I like my current car.  Then I'll get another used Mercedes.  I would like an SL, but I don't know if I really want to live with a low to the ground 2 seater when I am 6'2".  If not the SL, back to an another E-class.
    • I think that's your individual interpretation, not any projection from the ads themselves. Frankly, whenever I see a successful actor hawking a product, I automatically question whether they're in fact a consumer. And when it seems they're 'stepping down' in product, the whole thing becomes a farce. Anonymous individuals work better IMO.
    • I'm jaded and cynical, world-weary and worn down from decades in the corporate IT game.   I don't think *any* ad has 'inspired' me in maybe 25 years..   There are some I can appreciate occasionally, though.  Like the Jeeps in the mountains on snowy trails ads...always like those.
    • Much better, but still not inspired, the female voice is so flat and unexcited. It is as if they have a person who loves Lexus trying to sell Cadillac. WHERE IS THE PASSION? That is missing from both of these commercials. I remember the commercial that had and projected true emotion of I want to check out that auto. Recardo Montalbon. There are others, but we need people who can project passion and sell the auto even if you do not care for the auto. This has always stuck in my mind as he did an outstanding job of selling the auto with passion.
