  1. I remember when a childhood neighbor up the road bought a new '91 Syclone. He used to say "she'll hit 60 mph from one telephone pole to the next" Not as impressive with today's tech. and performance, but for a pickup truck mid 4 sec. to 60 mph in the early 90's, that was flyin'.

  2. So, I'm far away, in the land of fall colors, driving along in the U.P. of Michigan, and I see this old but familiar Buick in a driveway. No, it can't be. I pull off and find a spot where there is room to park. I take out my phone and set it to camera mode. It was a '76 or '77 Regal colonnade coupe. It had the V6 badge. The lady of the house comes out the door and I explain to her that my dad used to have one of these as a second car. I asked if it was for sale. She said that her husband would know the details, that he wanted to rescue this piece of history from going into oblivion, and she gave me their number after we talked a bit. She didn't know much about the car. I explained to her how it was a '77 as opposed to a '76. She said it ran. I suppose I could have turned over the engine, and hear the "odd firing" V6 come to life, but I felt that would have been so random, having just walked up to it. I asked if it had the original engine and transmission. She said she thought it was original. With all the info I knew about the car, I suppose she deduced I wasn't a flake. There was a good deal of rust on it, especially at its base and where the bumpers hook onto the car. The interior fabric is tattered. It's the pale blue base cloth interior. On the other hand, the gizmos are nonexistent. Sure, it has power steering and brakes, but no power windows, tilt wheel, or any of that. Also, as I expected, it didn't have A/C! This thing was hilarious. The price would be low. I still have their number somewhere. Mechanically, it would be very simple, with no bells and whistles. It could be fun to have this .... and it could also be a money pit to bring it back to being presentable. Would you have done it (moved toward buying it) or would you do it (if it's still available)? Photos: Parts of it look okay and parts of it look weathered: you can see the rust at its base ... also, check out the V6 badge! The area where the bumpers slotted into the ladder frame had seen better days ... there was a fair amount of rust I guess this household is voting for "RUMP." I didn't know you could do that. (I swear I didn't trim the photo.) The crossbars in the grille mean it's a '77. The '76 had the basic "Parthenon" grille, with only vertical bars in the grille. I didn't even lift the hood. You'd see that compact engine pushed up against the firewall! I was driving toward scenic sights that were on the checklist, not this Regal from yesteryear. WWCGD? What Would C&G-ers Do?

  3. Two of the three Corvairs made it, one is still there rotting. Probably the most inhospitable place a car has ever been driven through. A few Jeeps and Land Rovers ahve made it through, but probably fewer than 25 four wheeled vehicles in the last hundred years from what I can tell.

  8. First thing I missed- you were in the UP? Too bad I didn’t know....we could have met up if you were going south down 75.... ? Second thing- If the price is good- jump on it! If it costs you a few bucks here or there, no big deal- you only live once. Worse case, you could resell it to a car person if it became too much.. Plus, you would have some great stories to tell... I recently had a chance to get a wagon version of my first car, a 1987 Cavalier RS. I totally regret that now. I kept coming up with excuses to say no...but it was in good shape! Did need some stuff though. I say give it a shot!

  11. I like the Santa Fe but this overdone console is a bit much....sounds like the 25 turbo is only available on that top trim? If it was otherwise available, it might be a good sleeper car.

  16. I am contemplating what the next Dodge Charger might be like. I hope the progression is a good one. If it's a change like, say, from the '76/'77 Cutlass Supreme to the '83/'84 Cutlass Supreme, then I'd be okay with it. I'm talking analogies here. The latter of the Cuttys mentioned above kept all the good qualities of the former ones, but in a slightly smaller and lighter package. You could tell that they were lighter when driving them, but they still remained great cars worthy of their name and heritage. I spend too much time thinking about what this future car might be like. *sigh*

  18. Went to Michigan to pick up some tools with a friend...we trailered them back behind his dad's clean with a bit of Patina 92 F150. Red and white...we came across an immaculately restored Bronco same era sane colors. Kind if cool to cruise along in two older vehicles like that A convoy of F350 with testing apparatus all over them...Ford motor company logo on all of the trucks...

  20. The first Aluminum finned drums at Buick- '57 Roadmaster. The circles are holes in the steel liner; the aluminum was poured around the liners and locked in place via the holes. The next year, Buick did a process of cooling the liners and heating the AL castings, and pressing the former into the latter.

  21. Don't think I've ever heard 'vehicle' pronounced 've-hickle'. Anyhoo, haven't seen really seen much of note this month. Went out last Saturday to drop off my ballots at the county Board of Elections--15 minute drive then a 20 min wait in line w/ other vehicles...then took a drive across Cleveland and out into the suburbs and down through Rocky River Reservation (park)..great to see the fall colors and cooler weather. My sister had her Cadillac STS detailed to get it ready to sell, I plan to take it out for a drive this afternoon...running well for now.

  23. EV News of the day: Foxconn, the maker of iPhone has released their EV chassis system for those wanting to build their own EV's. Foxconn says they plan to have 10% of the global market by 2025. Foxconn also announced they will move from traditional battery packs available now to solid state in 2024. Foxconn is currently a battery supplier to Tesla in China. https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/16/foxconn-ev-plans/ BMW/Mini is recalling ALL 2020 PHEV models. To quote the story the following is the recall list, a voluntary recall which is weird when it is a fire risk. BMW is not clarifying what in the assembly by BMW of the battery pack is causing the fires, but they expect to begin repairs on the 26,700 PHEV's they manufactured between January 20th and September 28th 2020 https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/16/bmi-mini-phev-recall-fire-risk/ QUOTE: The list of cars affected by this voluntary recall includes 2020 and 2021 examples of the 530e, the X3 xDrive30e, and the Mini Countryman SE, coupe and convertible variants of the 2020 i8, as well as the 330e (pictured), the 745Le xDrive, and the X5 xDrive45e from the 2021 model year. All are equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack whose cells might have been contaminated by debris during the manufacturing process, according to a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

  28. GM's failure in Europe AND USA is why they had to rely on China. I'm not terribly bent out of shape about GM's failure in Europe anymore. If Fiat and PSA are still building cars, that says something...low standards....apart from the homerism to BMW, Merc, VWAG. GM's pending failure here in the US is partially a product of not producing in the US as much as many other issues.....downsizing interiors and engines, styling miscues, product class miscues, marking huge miscues, caring more about autonomous vehicles and CAFE.....and electric..... GM can probably offset some losses in China if they lose share there, by growing in other parts of the world not called Europe, and I think they are chipping away at those new opportunities. But then they give up AU...with Holden..... Really at the end of the day, Buick could be a huge contributor to increasing their US sales based on crossovers, and by building them here. GM's overall size and class strategy still confuses...is this smaller than the current Envision? Is it more like the XT4? The Enspire I HOPE is still coming, and that it is Blazer sized. A mid-large 2 row ala Edge / Blazer with premium status WOULD help Buick a lot, esp if built in the US. BUT it also has to look good and GM can't be trusted to put out well styled vehicles but maybe half the time these days.....
