The unwillingness to face market reality and invest in new product for the domestic US auto market will get them there if they are not there now.

October 2016: General Motors Co.
Luxury car depreciation is a wonderful and frightening thing. I am debating now what I want to do next summer. I am really enjoying riding my bicycle, but am Also thinking about Autocrossing again. Thinking about buying an NC (third gen) Miata, maybe 2011-2014 or so. I also live near the Ohio auto auction and know several people that own car lots. there are Jags and 5 series BMW products selling for less than Miatas and plane Jane F150's and Wranglers after a few years. Infinity, Cadillac, Lexus and Acura seem to be the only brands that hold resale value long term unless you are looking at something like AN AMG car from Benz. And even then, the older Infinity products seem to be the choice of the stance bros/young twentysomething guy with a wifebeater and tats crowd around here. Not much to help the luxury image. I guess since all of the nineties Hondas have rusted into oblivion here in Ohio, the ricers graduate to G35 and G37.... Used CTS seems to be the strongest selling Cadillac in terms of the sued market once you get several years old....

And this is perhaps the real reason that I will be buying an Acura or Lexus if I buy a gently sued Luxury car to replace the Jetta. Was doing an informal survey on luxury cars among co workers, one of my co workers is in his fifties and has never bought anything but GM products. He is so angry about the multiple electrical issues both of his daughters Cadillacs have had that he told me they could not give him a Cadillac. Still inexcusable in a high dollar car.

Considering Beetle sales are so far in the toilet, like about very other passenger car, yeah, probably makes near zero impact. I love the Jetta sizing, packaging, and styling, but again vW is highly irrational here. Since the MK 6 Jetta came out, we have had... 2.0 Two point slow, non turbo 2.0 from the nineties... 1.4T 1.8T 2.0 Turbo in the GLI 2.5 5 cyl Hybrid, that sold like a turd in a punch bowl.... MK 1 EA 189 Diesel MK 3 EA 288 Diesel (my car) Various 5 and 6 speed manuals, various five and 6 speed automatics, several variations of the DSG with multiple tuning patterns, dependent on GLI or TDI for the DSG Meanwhile Toyota sold the lions share of the Camry's with the same 4 cyl and autotrajic combo. The variety from VW would be nice if they got a single one of these right and didn't have egg on their face from virtually every combination listed. ...not to mention that VW still has not figured out a competent way to build a motor with a timing chain. Timing chains and VW's go together like Clinton and Emails or Trump and Twitter.

Caddy is still dealing with a lot of electrical issues with its vehicles, something that people here don't want to admit but yes, ti is an issue. Which is one reason Lexus or perhaps Acura would be the only Luxury car I would actually put in my driveway. And even then, only the TLX is competitive at all for Acura. Glut will be severe on a lot of products. Only about half a dozen or so actual passenger cars are up for the year, and a couple of them are specialty products like the Type F jaguar and Miata. Given that it is inevitable for the price of fuel to increase, a recession may well be in the works, a lot of car makers are making bland products, and there is a glut of sued vehicles on the market... Car makers may have a tough row to hoe for awhile.

Dream Car garage, WTF edition
Sadly, too little too late. Again, they need to build products they are fully invested in building from a corporate cultural viewpoint...and that is SUV's, Trucks, and the occasional specialty car.

Exterior design is still a little heavy for my tastes though....well done...but could be improved upon.

...and this is why Euro luxury car makers trump the Asians and Americans in many ways. The variety of models and execution of those models is pretty much self evident....

I am not sure that I am quite as pessimistic as Suaviloquent, but not really optimistic on either an environmental or automotive front. I really dislike the Conti he mentions more than I really want to get into here because I do not want to be thought of as a hater on the forums. I am ready to move on from the Camaro and Mustang also, was into cars as a very young boy and remember when the very first cars were nearly new. As for climate change also, I am disgusted with a lot more than that here in the USA. I would eventually like to relocate permanently elsewhere. Part of it is political, part of it is easier to live somewhere completely different. Thinking of teaching English as a second language when I retire. Conversely, some English speaking countries offer fairly easy immigration, would love Ireland or New Zealand. Scotland is awesome but harder to move into. Thinking of buying a very modest car if I sell the Jetta back because even if I don't relocate completely I want to travel a good bit before I leave this rock.

Which is why I am glad Ohio has a ton of rail trails and quiet roads around me for me to ride my bicycle. I love to ride my bike!

It will be interesting to see what Buick does with the Regal. Current car is outclassed in some ways by its competitors.

And they have a worldwide market for their cars which allows them to sell lower volume vehicle profitably in the US. Other markets give them that freedom. You forgot Continental, which had twelve hundred sales, mostly conquest. Although I do see the Finished costing more with a Lexus ES than C class...much less S class.
