BMW News: BMW Reveals More Information On ActiveHybrid 3, 3-Series Wagon
Drew Dowdell replied to William Maley's topic in BMW
Well what I was getting at was that if the hybrid doesn't get better mpg numbers than the 335d, what's the point? People who are very mpg conscious aren't going to care about 0.4 seconds faster to 60.- 7 replies

The neat thing about the nissan cvts is their ability to accelerate the car without engine rpm increasing under light medium throttle. it is the absolute most efficient way to accelerate a car. I'd say that 8 speeds are probably the top (as chrysler seems to be proving) for automatics and any more than that is just needless complexity that would be better served with a CVT.

It doesn't "feel" right because it doesn't make the same engine noises as daddies car did when shifting through the gears. I didn't need much convincing, but my week with the maxima was enough to sell me on them. Of they can get the ratio spread higher, the CVT really could be the next step after they can't put more gears into the traditional automatic.

The "perfect" transmission is a CVT with a wider range of ratios.... but lots of people won't drive CVTs.

How stupid are people where you live?
Drew Dowdell replied to A Horse With No Name's topic in The Lounge
As you guys know, I spend 75% of my time traveling around the eastern half of the country. I get to see more than my fair share. -
Cutlass... duh... gosh that Valiant and Rambler are ugly!
-
I would enjoy seeing it. Where is the transmission located?
-
It looks like a Lincoln Navigator that's had a personality-dectomy
-
So does the engine/transmission sit entirely behind the rear wheels then? Or is there some 180 degree bend in the power flow going on? I seem to remember some eastern block, rear engined thing having a set up with the powertrain completely behind the rear wheels and reading that it has dangerous handling tendencies due to weight imbalance.
