A guy posted this on BON: Video of the bed bouncehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U6KmwB2LyY From NHTSA: Other problems: Unintended acceleration? http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems...rintVersion=YES

What a bunch of idiots...that actually pisses me off watching that because that's my generation they're talking about, I used to watch Mr. Rogers as a kid, and I've always been a hard worker and tried to do things better. Hint hint Fox News...it's the PARENTS that teach kids the value of working hard, not a TV show.

I believe he also said he wants to see Israel "wiped out," but not violently...whatever that means. 100% true nutjob.

To stick up for Bob, they can be a good thing. We have front plates in Iowa and a drunk driver hit my friends parked car and fled the scene. Unluckily for the drunk driver, the front license plate fell off and police apprehended her shortly after. They look like ass, but there are benefits.

UAW sets strike deadline for Monday morning

I saw Obama speak at ISU on Friday, and if elected I have a gut feeling he'll accomplish little as president. His speech was slick and well-worded, but once it came time to answer questions from students he stumbled around and didn't provide any real substantial answers on how he would solve problems such as the economy and Iraq. This guy doesn't have a clue how the auto industry works, and with him now siding with the UAW, he's lost my vote. -
Didn't they use a Newlook bus in the movie "Speed"?

I love the '83 Bird / Cougar, and even more than that the '84 Mark. A guy a couple houses down has a deep red '86 Mark VII LSC with snowflake wheels...it's a beauty. As for the Taurus, I really haven't ever seen the first gen in good shape so I kind of have a neutral opinion on them. I like the second gen though, especially the SHO models. A friend of mine used to have a '92 Sable with the ground effects package and the 3.8L...good looking car, IMO. Some pics Aero Bird Aero Cat Mark LSC

Excellent post. -
Why is it that trains back in the 30s and 40s and I think even up through the 60s had a streamlined body that has now been reverted to a boxy, rectangular one? It just seems odd that the trains that influenced cars like the Lincoln Zephyr due to their sculpting and aerodynamics are now just rolling blocks that really don't have much in the way of design to them. Did this happen because trains lost their importance so train companies didn't want to waste the money "designing" them or hiring people to design them? The same thing has happened with buses. ISU has a few old GMC buses running around that have some curves and aerodynamics to them compared to the Gillig and Orion buses that are pretty much rolling bricks.

I think part of it is that they're to entrenched in either debt from buying the "motivational" videos or they have just been brainwashed to do nothing but recruit recruit recruit. Most of these people don't seem to have much in the way of self-esteem anyway. Those with common sense know MLM's will never work and the only ones making the money are the ones at the top.

My friend in Scamway/Quixtar is still trying to get me to buy his product he's selling, even though he's given up on me joining the MLM. I've been approached three times, all at college, by people trying to get me to join this Quixtar crap. It's pretty easy for them to hook a few young, impressionable freshmen. Promises of easy money if you just come to a 30 minute meeting with drinks and food afterward. How many college kids are going to turn down free food?

Ok, I'll bite and contribute some of my knowledge of green architecture: Double-pane windows are a cheap way to increase the energy efficiency of your home. Also, if you have a humidifier turning it up during the winter will allow you to keep the temp lower (down around 68) so that the house "feels" warmer. Same deal with the summer...dehumidifying the room can allow you to have the AC turned on at 78 F and still have the room not feel too warm. For new construction: In cold areas, large south-facing glass is important to maximize heat gain. You want minimal windows / openings on the west and north sides, lots of windows on the south, and some on the east in order to maximize daylight and allow for solar heating. By having some sort of mass inside near the south-facing glass, the mass will heat up during the day and will retain that heat into the night allowing you to cut back on mechanical heating. For summer months, you need some type of canopy that will block direct sunlight from entering through the windows, or some way to diffuse sunlight (translucent material, for instance). Since the sun is at a higher angle in the summer months, the canopy will effectively block most of the direct sunlight from entering in the room. Light colored roofs reflect lots of heat, skylights are a big no-no unless they are covered so that direct sunlight doesn't enter. Geothermal heat pumps can be used if you have a nearby body of water, and also you can take advantage of the earth's constant 55 F temp at the crust by having earth built up around the north sides of the building. This also helps deflect cold wind from the north in winter months, keeping the building warmer. Automatic lights that are motion-sensored can help save money on utility bills. The key is utilizing daylight instead of artificial light if you want to really save on energy costs. Building suppliers are constantly coming out with new building materials that are either recycled content, extremely environmentally friendly, etc. A community center in Cedar Rapids is using wheat-straw building panels that provide better insulation than typical polystyrene ones. SIPs panels are pre-constructed structural panels that are insulated very well and can save you money in building costs due to ease of installation. -

This is my same reaction as well. What about during the Roman period when temperatures were at higher levels than they are today? Of course the only people up around that area would have been Native Americans, since Europeans had not yet crossed the Atlantic. When Europeans first began exploring around the Northwestern Passage, we were in the middle of the Little Ice Age. Then we had another cold spell from approximately 1940 to 1970 (where reactionaries predicted we were entering the next Ice Age), now we have been warming up since then despite worse pollution and no clean air regulations earlier in the 20th century. Today is merely another reactionary period that certain political authorities are taking advantage of. We should continue to conserve and lessen our impact on the environment, but science and historical perspective should prevail in the end. A healthy dose of skepticism is always a good thing. -

The whole project has been ongoing for the last 4 years or so, they're finally getting close to being done. Now there are some parts with up to 5 lanes in each direction. I think it used to just be 3.

Is this in Idaho? My grandma on my dad's side grew up in Sweet Grass, Montana, and nearby are the Sweet Grass Hills which are some big buttes in the middle of flat prairie. There is also an area north of Shelby called "The Rocks" which are some huge limestone cliffs that you can climb on and rise 300 feet above farmland.

I worked on it most of the day Saturday and Sunday, so probably 16 hours or so.

I flew into Atlanta years ago on my way to Orlando and it was at night so I don't remember it too well. I do remember seeing all the dots from the city lights and how they seemed to stretch on forever. So I'm not really qualified to comment but from what I've heard Atlanta is pretty much the business capital of the Southeast. Hartsfield Airport is now the busiest airport in the country and Atlanta has the best skyline in the SE, IMO. The humidity would bother me though...I know I deal with it here, but it gets even stickier down in Georgia. If I had to live in the south, it'd probably be the Southwest around Phoenix, Tucson, or maybe Albuquerque. But Atlanta and Charlotte would probably be my two top picks in the Southeast.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Bob: As of right now, Des Moines' transit system is non-existent. All they have are the MTA buses that nobody uses. Everybody drives to work, I-235 is always backed up even though they recently added another lane or two by rebuilding the whole thing. This summer a guy came to our office who owns a T-shirt shop downtown and is putting together a proposal for a street car system that would connect downtown, the Capitol, a college, and the airport. It would cost about $100 million, which is 1/6 the cost of rebuilding 235. Omaha tried the same thing and local residents shot it down because they didn't want any tax increases. I have a feeling the same thing will happen with Des Moines...recently a $.01 sales tax proposal that would have gone toward consolidating all county buildings into one new office was shot down. DM just isn't a very progressive city when it comes to public transit. Even Little Rock, AR has a light rail system. TheGriffon: I looked it up because I had never heard of Laura Ingalls living here, and actually she lived in De Smet, SD.
