    As the Diesel Emits: Volkswagen's Fixed TDIs Are Hot Sellers

      It was a good month for Volkswagen's TDI vehicles (the first in a long time)

    You would think the stigma of the diesel emission scandal would keep people away from picking up a fixed Volkswagen TDI model, but you would be wrong.

    Reuters notes that in April, 12 percent of Volkswagen's sales were for TDI models (about 3,196 vehicles). This is quite impressive when you take into consideration that Volkswagen was only given the go-ahead to sell TDI models with the fix back in mid-April.

    But we have to wonder if this percentage would be the same if Volkswagen didn't put some enticing incentives on TDI vehicles. As we reported last month, Volkswagen is offering either 0% APR for up to 72 months and $5,000 cash bonus if you decide to buy or an $8,500 cash bonus if you lease.

    Price does entice, but then VW has a loyal fan base. This will be a Hiccup for sales of fixed TDIs but I doubt we will see it stay after these discounted units are gone.

    Purely political.  There are deranged forces afoot attempting to force people into the fatal compromise of electrics.  Time and time again the public shows little interest in electric cars... and this is all over the world.  The Chinese are also showing "tepid at best" interest in silly electric cars that strip freedom and are a blatant waste of money.

    The Chinese had virtually no charging network last time I looked. Interest will grow when filling stations do.

    Here in Columbus The interest in electrics is very strong actually

    If The político climate changes we may well see them bring diesels back 

    Really looking forward to test driving a Cruze diesel!

    IMHO, they could go right back to selling them  The public has a short memory.  Did the Camry lose it's sales crown during the whole unintended acceleration fiasco?  Nope.  Despite that recalls and lawsuits are still out there for GM's ignition fiasco hasn't had the slightest bearing on GM sales.  Especially with GM jumping into the diesel fray, i think it would be a mistake for VW to abandon them.

    It's not just price, because we've selling ours for MSRP.

    There's people that just genuinely want them and will buy without heavy incentives. VW could easily just bring them back.

    Good for VW that their diesels are selling again. Still no substitute for torque.

    Electrics may be the future, but there are good reasons they should be: nearly infinite torque and you can change the source of how you generate your electricity.  Winston Churchill said prior to WW2 that it is a good thing that crude oil is in so many places that any one country could not totally dominate oil supplies.  Unfortunately, OPEC showed up not long after Churchill died and has made a (partial) mockery of that thought.  Because electricity can be generated from so many domestic sources, no one here will be subject to foreign interference.  Both nuclear and renewable sources will be more than enough to end our dependence on oil, at least within a reasonably short time.  Electric vehicles are not the threat some people think it is (in theory),  They just need to be made reliable and fun to drive, and that will come soon enough.

    I never understood the reasoning behind the idea that because VW cheated on emissions that diesels were on their death bed. All of the stories of European auto makers one by one dropping diesels from their product lines. It made no sense, company x is found guilty of cheating people out of caffeine in their cola products so all beverage makers drop cola products yet there's a sizable demand for caffeine drinks. No other industry out there would leave a market demand unfulfilled.

    I view VW fans in the US the same way  I view hockey fans in the US

    • There are a few of them. Not as many as the more popular sports like football or baseball or basketball. (GM, Ford, Toyota)
    • But the loyal fans are freakin' loyal. No NHL lock-out or strike will keep them away (No emissions scandal will keep them away)
    • In some cities, hockey is THE sport in winter such as in Boston or Minneapolis...(just like VW's diesel engine....nothing else will do for these folks but VW's trusty TDI)

The body shop will increase by 564,000 square feet and a new 198,000 square foot battery assembly center will be constructed. Overall the expansion will add about 1,000 permanent jobs.       Volkswagen has release the pricing on the redesigned 2020 Passat and now it is roughly $2300 cheaper than the 2019 model.  It also becomes one of the least expensive midsize sedans you can buy, clocking in just $250 more expensive than the least expensive 2020 Subaru Legacy. 
      Some of that cost savings comes from carrying over a bunch of the bones of the car from 2019.  The platform is the same, not updated to the new MQB platform like China is getting with their version.  The 2.0-liter Turbo carries over as well, albeit with some improvement to the torque. Horsepower remains the same at 174 hp, while torque jumps 22 lb.-ft to 206.  The transmission remains a 6-speed automatic driving only the front wheels. 
      The 2020 Passat gets and exterior and interior refresh with new materials in the cabin and an updated instrument cluster. 
      The trims will be S, SE, R-Line, and SEL.  The cheapest S model still comes with forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. The SE, which starts at $26,765, gets additional chrome trim, keyless entry, push-button ignition, leather wrapped steering wheel, leatherette over the headed front seats, dual zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise, and lane keep assist.  The R-Line, which starts at $29,565, comes with all of the above, plus a standard sunroof, alarm, 19-inch alloy wheels, a body kit, and paddle shifter.  The top of the line SEL, at $32,015, comes with high beam assist, leather seats, heated rear seats, navigation, parking sensors, and a Fender audio system. 
      The 2020 Passat will continue to be manufactured in Chattanooga, TN and arrives in dealers in the next few weeks.

    • It still sucks, but I think you will come out much better in the next place you decide to go. Market for the most part is still solid, so I know you will find a new place quick, if not before the other place ends! I was bummed when I got laid off from my automotive job- but besides missing the cars, I find this one more fun. Reminds me to update my resume-though I kinda shy from it. I updated my Monster account, and the calls just won’t stop..... 😮 
    • The Jalopnik link makes a mistake in expressing an opinion that GM/Chevy had Tesla in their sites. Had Tesla products as a benchmark... The only thing I gather Chevy/GM had on benchmarking Telsa was the price point in which the Bolt was to be sold at as compared to the Model 3.  From the EV1, all the way to Volt gen 1 and 2, the Cadillac ELR, and then the  Bolt to the mild hybrid stuff on Malibus and Tahoes,  nothing suggests that GM ever wanted to do performance oriented EVs.  And GM could do a performance oriented EV if they chose to do so.  They took a different market approach.  Tesla has found that sweet spot. It does not mean that GM's approach is wrong vis-a-vis Tesla's approach. It just means that GM's approach and its choice of its product's packaging may be at fault... The Cadillac ELR was a 2 door personal luxury coupe econobox with an econobox derived Chevrolet version of its EV. And it also used the Chevrolet Volt's 1st generation tech instead of the 2nd generation tech, in an era when small, 2 door coupes dont sell. In an era when SUVs sell like mad. In an era when Tesla and Fisker were selling sexy body styled sedans and the Tesla was and still is eons ahead in  marketing, styling and dare I say in EV technology in some key tech areas... The Bolt does not fail as an EV product. It fails on its intended mission as an EV product. Not in terms of it not being a capable EV, but it failing of it not being capable of delivering the marketing message that its supposedly sold upon. Packaging. And also, GM does not put full faith in that marketing message either...and so the marketing is also downplayed... The Mustang Mach-E will only eat its lunch if EV buyers buy into a  1. Mustang EV 2. A Ford EV capable of being a good Tesla product equal I think point 1 wont be a problem. But point 2 might very well be. Some EV people have a strong bias against ICE makers and will NEVER take Ford, GM, VW, Nissan, etc, seriously and the Mach-E, as good as it seems on paper, does not have a chance and is DOA...          
    • LOL Listen.  American cars is what I love. From the 1900s to today.  But I'd like to try and learn about  cars from different countries and from their different eras too.   Car craziness and car culture is strong in America, but it aint strictly an American thing. The automobile has defined America and its culture and we revolve our modern lives around it more than any other culture, but there is a car culture elsewhere other than North America. And if it wasnt for 2 devastating world wars in Europe where the automobile was starting to get a grip on life here as well as in Europe, the automobile in Europe would have had the same influence as in America.  But like everything else in nature, the environment influences the surroundings and the same entity evolves differently and at a different pace as the next.  I love to learn about different car cultures around the globe and how the car has influenced that society and how it evolved differently from ours. And from all that,  I learned that car enthusiasts around the world are the same, but have a different take on the performance car than what we have. And from an enthusiast point of view, for which I am, I enjoy enthusiast cars.  And I want to appreciate that.  I have learned that I actually do enjoy European racing cars of the 1920s and 1930s.  Or the rivalry that Ferruccio had with Enzo that produced those slick Italian cars of the 1960s and 1970s from both companies.  I enjoy the French quirkiness and I enjoy an Alpina race to which Renault paid a tribute to just a couple of years ago, kinda like what Ford did with the Ford GT in 2005.  I actually like that Renault/Alpina. Its a cool little sports car.  The Japanese car culture thing is whack. Most of it just seems weird to me. But I definitely like the American influence on their sports cars (which also had a slight Euro touch to them too) which in turn begat a pure Japanese sports car scene.  I get the question marks.  I do not like the shyteboxes that Europe has produced. But then again, I dont like the shyteboxes that Detroit has produced over the years also. But, I do prefer Detroit shyte over Europe's though. And I feel like  what Jay Leno has over other car "influencers" is that he has a certain bias towards cars that I find interesting and I gravitate towards his influence over others.
