2019 Volvo S60: A Swede with An American Accent

      Built in the USA

The 2019 Volvo S60 marks a few milestones for the Swedish automaker. For one, Volvo can finally say goodbye to the final remnants of its Ford ownership. The S60 is also the first model for the brand to be built in the U.S. at a new plant in South Carolina. It will also be the first Volvo to not offer a diesel engine.

At first glance, the S60 looks almost the same as the larger S90 sedan. But get a bit closer and there are some major differences. For example, the 'Thor's Hammer' daytime running lights are closer to the grille than on the S90. The bumpers are much more aggressive and the doors feature deeper stamps and creases. Compared to the outgoing S60, the new model is slightly longer. Most of that increase goes to those sitting in the backseat. The interior is the same as you'll find in the V60 and XC60, complete with the 9-inch Sensus infotainment system.

Three engines will be on offer for the U.S.

    • T5: Turbocharged 2.0L Four-Cylinder, 250 horsepower, Front-Wheel Drive
    • T6: Twincharged 2.0L Four-Cylinder, 300 horsepower, All-Wheel Drive
    • T8 Twin-Engine: Twincharged 2.0L Four-Cylinder with Hybrid System, 400 horsepower, All-Wheel Drive

All engines will come paired with an eight-speed automatic. A T6 Twin-Engine with 340 horsepower will be available for other markets.

Those wanting a bit more power only need to turn to the Polestar Engineered model that adds 15 horsepower, along with changes to the suspension and brakes.

Being a Volvo, the 2019 S60 has a long list of safety features including automatic emergency braking, run-off road mitigation, and oncoming lane mitigation. Volvo's Pilot Assist that assists a driver with steering, acceleration, and braking on well-marked roads will be an option.

Pricing for the 2019 Volvo S60 is as followed,

    • T5 Momentum: $36,795
    • T5 R-Design: $42,895
    • T5 Inscription: $43,895
    • T6 Momentum: $41,295
    • T6 R-Design: $46,395
    • T6 Inscription: $48,395
    • T8 R-Design: $55,395
    • T8 Inscription: $55,395

All prices include a $995 destination charge.

Those wanting to do a Care by Volvo subscription will have the choice of three models,

    • S60 T6 Momentum: $755 per month
    • S60 T6 R-Design: $855 per month
    • S60 T8 Polestar: To be announced at a later date.

It needs to be noted that the T8 Polestar Engineered model will only be available through Care by Volvo for now.

The order books are open right now for most of the S60 models; the T8 Polestar will be available to order starting June 28th. Production is expected to begin in the fall.

Volvo Cars launch new S60 sports sedan – the first Volvo car made in the USA

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, today revealed the new S60 luxury sedan at the company’s first American manufacturing plant outside Charleston, South Carolina.

The new South Carolina plant is officially inaugurated today. The combined car launch and factory opening reinforce Volvo Cars’ commitment to the US, an important market for the company and its new sedan. The new S60 is the first Volvo car made in the United States.

“The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”

The new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel engine, signalling the company’s industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. In 2017 Volvo Cars was the first global car maker to announce its strategy that from 2019 all new models will be electrified.

The award-winning turbo charged and supercharged T8 Twin Engine Plug-In Hybrid will be available in the new S60, delivering 313 horsepower with a rear electric motor adding 87 horsepower for a combined power output of 400 horsepower.  The T5 FWD and T6 AWD will also be available. The T5 FWD, T6 AWD and T8 Twin Engine Plug-In Hybrid will carry a MSRP of $35,800, $40,300 and $54,400 respectively.

The new S60 is available via traditional purchase, lease and Care by Volvo, a premium subscription service, which offers car access with no down payment via a monthly flat rate. Care by Volvo makes having a car as easy as having a mobile phone. A well-equipped S60 T6 AWD Momentum will be available for $775 a month through the program and the S60 T6 AWD R-Design for $850 a month. Reservations can be made online today at volvocars.com/us.

The new S60 shares Volvo Cars’ own Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, safety technology and infotainment system with the new V60 premium mid-size wagon, launched earlier this year, as well as the top-of-the-line 90 Series cars and award-winning XC60, all of which have achieved industry-leading safety ratings. This makes the new S60 one of the safest cars on the road.

The City Safety with Autobrake technology assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognize pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first for the mid-size sedan segment, City Safety now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions.

The optional Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 80 mph – has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The S60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further enhances safety for people inside and outside the car.

Volvo Cars’ Sensus Connect infotainment system is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G standard, and keeps drivers connected at all times. The intuitive control is a tablet-style touch screen interface that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment apps.

The new S60 will also be offered with a Polestar Engineered trim level – developed by Volvo Cars’ electric performance arm, Polestar.

Polestar Engineered is only available on the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid and is a complete offer with upgrades to the exterior and interior design, along with the car’s wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit, boosting the S60 T8 combined output to 415hp.  A limited volume of this variant will be available exclusively through the Care by Volvo app on June 28.

I have to say I like the looks, from the Tail lights to the Thors hammer headlights, I like how it all comes together in a nice flowing style. Interior is great, as a solid flowing mix of technology and actual switches.

I have to say I like this allot.

It looks good and has nice powertrain options, I think it is priced well too.  The interior is clean and modern but I think there are better interiors in this segment too.

nice, the exterior while nice goes to a longer trunk with a small upright greenhouse and a bit of a Dodge Charger look to it that I think looks less sleek than the 'trunkless' look of many sedans now, but overall not a deal breaker and it is really consistent with the look and proportions of the S90.

interior wise, Volvo keeps doing nice interiors that to me look better than the Germans etc. and this continues on.

I would rather see Volvo sell cars than BMW or Mercedes gaining more market share so sure, this is ok by me.

Really?  An obvious dig, and misleading.  Untrue even.  Decent looking car though, does "look" like a Volvo in a square sort of way.

How is this misleading? All Volvo's in the past have had a diesel option and with this one, there is none as each model will get revamped and diesel will go away.

Well, it's not the first Volvo without a diesel option...I don't think the P1800 or C70 had a diesel version, for instance.   A more accurate statement might be 'it's the first recent Volvo sedan without a diesel option', though.

I get what your saying, but I also think most people today tend to think short term in regards to the last 10 years or so and not history long term like allot of us. But I get it. Thx

The first-generation C70 did not have a diesel option, but the second-generation did. But like @dfelt said and I agree with, most people have a short attention span and possibly don't remember any Volvo vehicles without a diesel.

The C70 had a diesel in EU.

But yes, I'm sure somewhere in history there was a Volvo without a diesel engine.  Perhaps its the first Volvo without a diesel since Chinese ownership?

That's where I figured the loophole was... Globally they've had a diesel option in every car, I'm assuming.

I have a feeling they know their past products a little better than we do.

Volvo has it going on.  Not a big fan of their infotainment based on my colleague's XC90, but the simple handsome lines in and out do it for me and this might be their best yet of late.

I like that red paint on it too.

No son... what they're doing (Volvo) is making a public gesture.  They started making cars in 1927... there have been MANY MANY Volvo models never available with a diesel.  That is all I'm pointing out.  It is disingenuous of them.  I find it rather stinky.

Moving on, I agree with dfelt... I love authentic saddle brown leather interiors... most of the "browns" of today come across as orange.  Not cool.

    • Hello Everyone, You have probably NOTICED that I have not been posting much and especially this summer have not been posting any auto news. That will change as I move into the fall and get back to my hobby of my passion for the auto industry. What have I been doing you might be wondering. I had a major yard project that consumed every day all my spare time. I installed a 33,000 lb commercial grade retaining wall and a new heavy duty 6ft fence on my back yard. Last winter storms took down my fence that was part of the house when I bought it in 1999. The yard was also on an angle from 5ft height to the east to ground level on the west.  Since my wife and I have decided to eventually in 20 plus years retire here, I decided to level the yard, install a retaining wall and replace the fence. We love to garden so 1/3rd of the yard is at the higher level and the rest is ground level with the base of the house. After my company Trade Show, I came home on Friday May 24th 2024 and took delivery of 33,000 lbs of retaining wall stones, toppers and corner stones. As one can see, I did make a mistake in that I had them left double stacked and as such had to lift all the stones multiple times to get them down and stagged in the back yard. Each stone weights 90lbs, corner stones are 110lbs and the toppers are 45lbs. I also had 6 tree stumps to remove as these trees which where my neighbors had grown across the property line and would if left, over time rot and cause the wall to possibly shift and sink. I also ran into this huge green granite boulder which was buried again once I had removed the tree stumps. Here is a picture of the west side corner looking back, the excavation I did for prepping for 5/8th crushed rock bed and installation of the wall. With the crushed rock bed in place and packed down, I could also install the draining line and start to install the stones. From filling in the stones with crushed rock to building the corner, things progressed nicely I felt. To keep dirt from clogging the drain field behind the wall, I used commercial grade fabric that lets the water flow but holds the dirt back. Toppers are glued on after I cut them to give me a presentable corner. The green sticks you see is where I will have the galvanized fence post base installed into the wall with cement. Here is the section with the tree stumps removed and the wall built, dirt packed and all secure. Now comes the coring part to create the holes that will allow me to install the fence post bases. The toppers where the post go is not glued on yet. To do this, it takes a strong 18V drill, 5" core bit, water and strength. I used OZ-Posts bases which are great. Here is the upper section with them cemented in. The best thing about these is that in my lifetime I will never have to worry about having to replace them. If a tree falls and damages a section of the fence, easy to unscrew the posts and replace the section. Best part is I never have to worry about rotting as you install them up 1 inch to allow all water to run off the post and onto the topper and go away. With the bases installed and cured, I was able to install all the fence posts and start building. View from the neighbor's side of the finished wall/fence Finished view from my deck. I still have an interior wall to finish that will support the raised area where our garden will be and build an easy walk ramp up from the lower section. So, this is why you have not seen much posting from me or heard much from me over the last 5 months or so. Still have much to do, but at least the biggest part of getting the yard secured with a new wall / fence is done. I will be working on the rest of it over the fall/winter/spring. If ya have any questions hit me up, always happy to share my experience with ya. Yes, I lost 35lbs doing this project, nothing like a ton of manual labor to get into shape. 😂

    • Like all companies, greed at the executive level along with a careless attitude of if no one notices, no one is complaining loud enough, who cares as long as I get my big bonus. America is going to have a massive shock in regards to companies that used to be the best failing. It is a sad state of affairs and narcissistic CEOs are not helping the situation.

Here's a stance we've seen for 8 or 9 years and those alloy wheels look good. While refueling it, I took an opportunity to take this photo:  you see this standout color, a light beige interior with darker accents, and even an interesting and less common color for the faux woodgrain that work together very well, making this a really likable unit.
