While this report came out last year, there is some interesting assumptions / analysis made by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. This report starts off with the basic background and thesis along with industry trends and then dives into company analysis, expected market share shifts, implications for suppliers to dealers and the all mighty conclusion. What was interesting to note is the expected decline in market share by Korean manufactures while Japan stays pretty much the same and US grows. They do see that …

IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2018, Surprise Prius and Ioniq lost out to Kia Niro http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/TSP-List Amazing but for 2018, the Kia Niro bested the Prius and Ioniq as IIHS top Safety pick plus rating. Interesting observation is that this auto beats everyone else out as long as you have all the options checked as the Base Niro is good just not as good as the Niro that was used for testing.

"When we heard Cadillac Alpha-platform chief Tony Roma talking about some of his team moonlighting behind the wheels of their own race cars, we thought it might be fun to meet a few of them. Wary of the flack-favorite 'our-guys-are-car-guys-because-they-own-cars' stunt... we asked Cadillac if we might be able to set up a track day. When that Friday afternoon came, enough racers had RSVP’d that we could have filled a grid. "The 15 [that showed up]—more wanted to attend but were needed elsewhere—have all helped make the latest generation of the Cadillac CTS the best yet, the sports sedan that has finally put GM on par with its German rivals. Each of them races, and it’s t…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 17, 2012 Fisker has a lot of problems: money, delays, and an investigation into a Karma fire are just some of them. And it doesn't look like the problems are going to end soon. Inside EVs got their hands on some leaked documents that were dated "a few weeks ago" dealing with the new Atlantic sedan. First the bad news. Originally, Fisker said that production would begin in late 2012 before hitting the market in early 2013. The leaked document states “negotiations with the DoE have become more complicated and are expected to take longer than originally expected”, delaying the Atlantic’s 2013 launch by several months…

Much has been written about the current Mustang (not least by Ford itself) concerning its conception as a "global car." In particular, much emphasis has been placed on the S550's ability to be sold in RHD markets. However, there has been a bit of ambiguity about the car's power output, particularly in V8 form. Top Gear's review of the 5.0 placed output at 412hp, without explanation. Now, we know why. R&T is reporting that some folks have discovered the exhaust on RHD cars is severely compromised in order to clear the RHD steering hardware: "Our friends in England and other right-hand drive nations make a very particular sacrifice: thanks to different steering p…

Started in 2013 at the University of Maryland Chemistry lab, ceramic solid-state batteries we the brainchild of Dr. Greg Hitz and Dr. Eric Wachsman. The focus was to increase energy density while making it safer and this gained attention when Samsung Note Phones, especially the Note 7 started to catch fire in 2016. As per the Wall Street story, the United States is far behind the global rivals in the race for energy supremacy in the Green New World. With this, the idea is to catch up and surpass the competition by having a safer energy dense battery. What was a small investment at the beginning by the department of energy has now grown with $8 mil…

2010 Chicago Auto Show Coverage The 2010 Chicago Auto Show wasn't all that impressive this year with very few vehicle introductions. Nissan/Infiniti decided to show up even though they were absent from Detroit. They didn't bring anything new and they got stuffed in a remote back corner behind Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Jaguar. Chrysler re-used their exact same displays from Detroit, which is fine because they're actually pretty classy. Any speaker for Toyota couldn't make it more than 4 sentences without stressing how much their customers' safety mattered to them. They even went so far as to stress that the new, not even in production yet, Toyota Avalon wouldn't be b…

G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com Self Driving Machines is a battle for your soul and that of Detroit! Wall Street Journal had the following story, Detroit Battles for the Soul of Self-Driving Machines. In reading this I felt it was more about Self Driving Machines and the battle for Detroit and your soul as a driver. The story goes on to follow an engineer who left Caterpillar and went to Ford only to end up at a startup that is doing far more inline with High Tech software companies than auto companies. It made me wonder if the new Detroit is not the west coast now. The amount of technology that is being aimed at the auto…

NHTSA Gives The Ok To Terrafugia's Flying Car William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com July 12, 2011 The dream of the flying car looks to be coming true. Today, Massachusetts-based Terrafugia, Inc has been granted all the special exemptions it had requested from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for their vehicle, the Transition Roadable Aircraft. Known as the Transition, it's the first flying vehicle to receive such exemptions from the Department of Transportation since the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards came into fruition during the 70's. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 21, 2013 This maybe somewhat hard to believe, but German luxury models are cheaper than their Korean counterparts in South Korea. For example, a BMW 528i is around $64,000 in South Korea while Kia's flagship K9 is around $76,400. A difference of $12,400. Consumers in South Korea are taking notice of this and are going towards the Germans. Why are the German vehicles much cheaper? Lowered tarrifs. Thanks to a trade pact introduced back in 2011, duties on European products dropped from 8 to 3.2 percent. This means automakers such as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz have seen an sales increase of 25 percent in the first …
