Can GM just toss the UAW and replace them at this point? Union support is probably near its lowest point in years.3 points
-
A modest proposal: replace UAW members with nonunion labor one plant at a time instead of all at once. Once Ford and FCA see that it is possible, they will follow suit. All three should also ditch their union healthcare benefits entirely.3 points

Over all nice but plain CUV, fits the Honda customer profile and should serve them well. The wood trim looks real and not that plastic fake look but that could just be the pictures. Two things: This is going to make it harder for GM to do their package overprice as so much is now included in the base units. GM and FCA need to get their act together to have a Hybrid CUV or EV CUV ASAP as Ford has Hybrids that folks like and now Honda. This will help push more towards the Hybrid / EV world as these options come out hopefully reasonably priced.2 points

An estimated 40mpg if the 50% increase in fuel economy figure holds up. That would be great for you.2 points

I agree! I see some new features on the Hybrid! Heated steering wheel, paddle shifters, wireless charging, parking sensors and LED fog lights! This could be my next new car! Hybrid will be great for all of my work driving too ?2 points

They didn't do much to the outside, but the hybrid sounds compelling.2 points

It is great that they are not abandoning it. The twins and the Miata are probably the best affordable sports cars on the market. Good to see Toyota and Subaru investing to make them better.2 points

Yes, but my suggestion would be a way to smooth over the transition. Plus, what Drew said is a major factor. "GM claims that it is more than generous offering the average hourly employee roughly $90,000 per year, which does not include top-notch benefits." I don't think they NEED more to do quality work. That is VERY good compensation.2 points

I put a new thing up as the first tab called Social Stream. It gives the site a more Facebook like feel to it and it also lets you see status updates of other people on the site. The News tab has an updated look as well. Try them out and let me know what you think.1 point

Got to check out and sit in this bad boy C8 last month at a Chevrolet dealer reveal day here in Scottsdale, AZ. GM is touring the country with 3 or 4 or them. Very cool presentation. Beautiful and solid build inside and out. GM really knocked it out of the park with this car, amazing engineering feat. U.S.A!!1 point

1. is true, GM is going to have to change their pricing structure around in order to keep customers. CR-V has Sense standard, Toyota has their thing standard on the RAV4. 2. What hybrids at ford? The only hybrid that Ford is making these days is the Explorer. Fusion and CMAX are dead.1 point

You're preaching to the choir director there..... Tacoma sales haven't fallen since the Canyon, Colorado, and Ranger all came back on the market. The pie for mid-size trucks just got a whole lot bigger.1 point

Hi GM. We need a hybrid Equinox and Terrain STAT. Decently priced and decently equipped. Sincerely, the American consumer1 point

The RAV4 hybrid is selling at 100K+ a year clip in the US last I checked, so Honda needed to get this here. In Canada currently there is almost a six month wait upon ordering a RAV4 hybrid. They should probably have the option for their thirstier midsize/3 row models too (Passport/Pilot)1 point

? 6x6 USA builds these trucks and I guess they were never designed to go up a small hill. Seems pictures of it in camo and an oops uncovered shell hit the news. https://www.motor1.com/news/371560/ford-baby-bronco-spy-shots/ Seems Ford Bronco is testing in Australia https://www.motor1.com/news/368204/ford-bronco-test-mule-australia/1 point

School districts are looking to retire Diesel buses fast and looking to states to help pay for the change over to EV buses. Michigan state has agreed to help cover 70% of the cost for multiple school districts that have moved forward with purchasing EV school buses. 17 Proterra EV buses to start. https://chargedevs.com/newswire/michigan-school-districts-to-buy-17-electric-buses/1 point

"That $90,000 includes overtime and fat profit-sharing checks. Last year's GM profit-sharing was about $14,000 per employee. Ford's was $7,600; FCA's was $6,000." "CAR data said that since 2011, UAW-Detroit Three profit-sharing checks averaged about $6,600 per worker at each of the companies. That's equal to about an additional $3.18 an hour. " https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2019/09/13/uaw-contract-talks-deadline-strike-gm-ford-fca/2266631001/ Still, $90,000 before benefits. That's a lot of money for pretty damn unskilled labor.1 point

Agree that the Glossy wood accents in GM or for that matter any auto companies product looks fake and cheap to me too. Yes various members are nitpicking to attempt to justify MB doing the same thing as GM.1 point

Today on the way home to the bus stop.from work, I saw this police car followed by a manufacture plate full size truck that had tubes all over Nd then I saw on the back a camera hanging with red light clearly recording. I look where the camera was pointed at and a standard size Yukon with no plate, but also a nose I had never seen before. Got my phone out in the rain to snap this pic, this refresh??? Yukon was followed by a current year yukon 2019 with manufacture plates and then a seattle motorcycle with lights on. Clearly recording something in the Emerald City.1 point

Interesting story as the wages come out and how they average across the 3 Detroit companies with entry at 15 to 17 an hour and skilled, legacy and production making up to 36, 33 and 29 an hour. Average worker on the assembly line this year has made between 75 to 100,000 salary plus bonus for assembly line work. I know nurses and engineers that do not make that. UAW is well paid and they are being greedy. Intersting how the stories are showing that the UAW has a $750 million war chest to handle strikes but felt it was important to increase this so took higher dues to bring it to $850 million for this GM strike which is to set the tone for strikes against Ford and FCA. Something stinks in the UAW Leadership.1 point

Corporations need to be somewhat greedy to survive, especially when it's the UAW union we're talking about, they have always financially beat on the Big 3 (now Big 2 and FCA). Most of these union workers get somewhere in the vicinity of $35/hr., that's more than enough for what they do and GM is offering a 2% raise so it's not like they aren't trying to work something out. It's pretty clear that more of the greed leans toward the UAW top brass. My father was part of the Steel Workers Union back in the 70's and early 80's and he said unions are always very greedy and he would never be a part of one again and wasn't after '83. GM paid out a pretty healthy profit sharing check to the tune of $10,750 to 46,500 hourly employees in Feb. 2019, that's a pretty fat check and just shy of $500M in profits that GM handed them. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2019/02/06/gm-profit-sharing-checks-uaw-workers/2783459002/ There's a reason the president of the UAW just had his home raided by the FBI for corruption allegations. The last UAW president had a cottage built with UAW money, that's not possible without major corruption going on.1 point

While the black and brown is much better than all black or all tan, it still looks like an attempt at building a ricer auto with the same cheap plastic circle vents you find in Fords. Pass, CT5 and 4 still look better to me.1 point

Sure unions are greedy, but GM had $8 billion on net income least year, Mary Barra made $22 million. Corporations are greedy too. Maybe what GM should do is offer a profit share bonus, so on years like 2018 when there is an $8 billion profit, take $1 billion of that and pay to the workers. So then the workers also have incentive to build quality product, and ensure the company does well.1 point

Is this better, it isn't all black This car is also entering its 6th year on the market, and still top of the class, and they'll advance it on the next one.1 point

It is loads better than that all black C-Class I got off their web site. That is a plastic nightmare on par with that sterile black and grey mess for the A-Class.1 point

Which is which in the above pics (A or C)? Neither looks to be 'above' the other...1 point

training up 50,000 people would take a looong time and really hurt quality.1 point

CT4 versus A-Class Dash versus C-Class Dash I will honestly say the C-Class looks dated to the Cadillac or A-Class and the A-Class leans more towards Tech than Luxury which is what I get out of the CT4. Different strokes for different folks. Older will like the CT4 over the A-Class younger will probably go with the A-Class. The A-Class and C-Class are far more sterile in my opinion than the CT4. A-Class Interior - Very Sterile and Blah to me. C-Class interior - All black leaves one with a very sterile look and those cheap plastic circle vents on both do not look good to me.1 point

Sad, this was again GM Fault for putting the Hybrid in a weird trim requirement with limited options. They purposely killed this by the stupid mgmt. choices on how it was available and lack of marketing.1 point

Don't forget about the other best seller that has a hybrid, RAV4. It starts less than 28k, too.0 points
