Colors and Customization Rivian has a selection of new colors that go with the existing Midnight, Glacier White, Forest Green, Borealis and Launch Green (available for a limited time with Launch Package). Catalina Cove: Exclusive to R2, like the waters that surround Catalina Island, this metallic paint shifts from deep Pacific blues to translucent greens in the light. Esker Silver: Inspired by the winding ridges of gravel and sand that glaciers leave behind, fine metallic flakes bring depth to this shimmering silver. Half Moon Grey: This metallic grey is inspired by the coastal cliffs of Half Moon Bay — layers of granite and sandstone shifting in warm light. Wheels and Tires Customization of one's ride is supported with a selection of wheels and tire packages, all are a 32" overall diameter. 19" Machined Graphite All-Season: Aluminum wheels with a bright machined finish and graphite metallic pockets. With Pirelli all-season tires for versatile performance in all kinds of conditions. 20" Bicolor Carbon All-Season: Aluminum wheels with satin machined details and satin carbon pockets are paired with Pirelli all-season tires for a blend of range and performance. 20" Black Sand All-Terrain: Forged aluminum machined face wheels with dark satin tint and black pockets. Paired with versatile BF Goodrich all-terrain tires for confident handling, on-road and off. 21" Liquid Tungsten All-Season: Forged aluminum machined face wheels finished with liquid tungsten tint and dark pockets. With Pirelli all-season tires, this combo is best for maximizing range and on-road performance. Interior Design R2 Performance and Premium trims feature two signature interiors defined by a tactile blend of Birch wood accents and organic textures. Black Crater Signature — Inspired by the dynamic dark tones of volcanic rock, this interior is crafted with upcycled Birch wood and textile accents. This creates an inviting, dark tonal environment that seamlessly blends rugged durability with a refined, minimalist aesthetic. Coastal Cloud Signature — Open and airy, the crisp tones of cool and cloudy coastal sky are warmed with upcycled Birch wood and soft textile accents. This palette offers a modern aesthetic that is grounded in Rivian's nature-inspired design language. For Standard trim: Black Crater — Featuring dark volcanic tones, a light and airy headliner and natural fiber accents, for an interior that feels both expansive and welcoming. Cabin Space and Storage The interior maximizes every square inch, delivering premium views and a comfortable experience for up to five adults with zero bad seats in the cabin. Open-Air Freedom: A hallmark of the R2 design is the rear drop glass window that lowers completely into the liftgate. With the touch of a button, drivers can drop all windows to allow for flow-through breezes or easily haul long gear like surfboards (included only on Performance and Premium trims). Smart Storage: With 90.1 cubic feet of total enclosed storage, R2 easily adapts to your gear. The class-leading front trunk with 5.2 cu ft of space fits a carry-on and large backpack, dual glove boxes provide maximum organization, and the fold-flat rear seats create a level loading surface for bikes and camping gear. Off-Road Capability and Dimensions 2,000 lbs lighter than the R1 and sitting on a shorter wheelbase (115.6 in), R2 is incredibly responsive and maneuverable in urban environments. Despite its nimbleness, it retains Rivian's off-road DNA. Adventure-oriented EV buyers may also want to compare the 2027 Scout Traveler & Terra, which targets a similar rugged EV SUV market. Best-in-Class Stance: Features 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25° approach angle, and a 26° departure angle. Dynamic Drive Experience: R2 achieves a planted, connected-to-the-road feel through a low center of gravity enabled by its structural battery pack. This foundation is enhanced by a semi-active suspension (unique to Performance trim) that delivers superior handling and precision across both on- and off-road terrain. Technology and Driver Assistance R2 marks the evolution of the software-defined vehicle: an AI-ready architecture that pairs 5G-connected, offline-capable processing with tactile, haptic hardware. Built on a multi-modal perception stack—featuring 11 HDR cameras with a combined 65MP and a sophisticated five-radar system—the R2 delivers a leap in hardware fidelity. This foundation powers an expanding suite of driver assistance and active safety features designed for a drive that feels as advanced as it operates. Designed for the Road Ahead: Rivian Autonomy+&sup7; ($49.99/month or $2,500/one-time) hardware is built into all R2 trims and service is optional across the lineup (lifetime access to Autonomy+ included&sup5; with Launch Package), bringing L2+ hands-free assisted driving to 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada with Universal Hands-Free&sup6;. Every Rivian comes standard with a system that continuously evolves with each software update, getting smarter right from your driveway, and foundational active safety and driver assistance features. All new R2 deliveries include a 60-day trial of Autonomy+. AI Powerhouse: R2 is outfitted with 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute dedicated to the in-cabin experience. This includes enabling the forthcoming Rivian Assistant—Rivian's in-vehicle voice assistant that understands you, your vehicle and your context—to smoothly run complex tasks locally on the edge, even if the vehicle is offline. Haptic Halo Wheels: At the center of the R2 driving experience is a redesigned steering wheel featuring haptic 'halo' dials. These dynamic and context-aware controls—capable of scrolling, pushing, pulling and tilting—provide distinct physical responses for multiple functions, bridging the gap between digital software and tactile hardware to keep the driver's focus on the horizon. Both the physical wheels and underlying haptic technology were designed in-house. Dual Digital Displays: R2 offers flexibility and control with two displays—a driver display in front of the steering wheel for more utility on the road, and the center display for a deeper dive into features. Software Updates: Rivian builds vertically-integrated hardware and software, enabling your vehicle to gain meaningful updates via software right from your driveway. R2 evolves this vertically integrated approach with a new, streamlined electrical architecture that delivers more capability with less complexity, providing ample headroom for the future. Rivian Unveils the R2: $45K, 300+ Miles, and Built for Adventure
Drew Dowdell posted an article in Rivian
Expanding its offerings today, Rivian unveiled the Rivian R2, expected to go on sale in early 2026. This new model rides on a new platform and is smaller than its big brother, the Rivian R1, by nearly 15 inches in length and 12 inches in height. The first question and second questions on people's minds when revealing a new electric vehicle are cost and range. In this, the Rivian R2 will come to market with an expected $45,000 base price and an EV range of 300 - 320 miles, depending on the configuration. Rivian is expected to enable Tesla Supercharger access in the next few weeks, more than doubling the number of charging plugs available to Rivian drivers, and the R2 will ship with the Tesla-designed NACS port natively. Smaller Platform, Three Motor Options While this is a new platform, Rivian was careful to keep the details familial. The R2 will be built, at least initially, at Rivian's Normal, Illinois plant to enable a faster ramp-up for 2026, though production could move to Rivian's new plant in Georgia once that comes online. Unlike the R1, which is available in dual- or quad-motor configurations, the R2 will be available as a single-motor rear-wheel drive, a dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a tri-motor all-wheel drive. In top spec, the R2 is capable of sprinting to 60 in under 3 seconds. Every version of the R2 will have at least 300 miles of range. Exact charging speeds haven't been released, but Rivian claims charging from 10-percent to 80-percent will take less than 30 minutes on a DC-Fast Charger. You can see in the Rivian R2 size compared to the Rivian R1S to the left, there is a significant difference in size between the two vehicles. (Click image to enlarge) Clever Features the R1 Didn't Have The R2 gets some neat features not on the Rivian R1. One of the main bits of feedback Rivian received about the R1 was over the lack of a glovebox, and Rivian overcompensated in the R2, with not one, but two gloveboxes. The rear window can lower into the hatch like in a Toyota 4-Runner and the rear C-panel windows pop out for additional ventilation. All four seats, yes, including the driver's seat, fold flat to allow for an in-vehicle camping experience. Keeping with their adventure theme, the R2 has some off-road credible specs with 9.8 inches of ground clearance, 32-inch tires, a 25-degree approach angle, and 27-degrees of departure angle. Rivian also had a "... and one more thing" moment and unveiled the Rivian R3, an even smaller crossover based on the R2. Be sure to check out the Rivian R3 story also. Reservations for the Rivian R2 are open now at Rivian.com. Check out the Rivian R2 photo gallery for more angles on this adventure-ready EV.- 7 comments

Jeep shared some more details of the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer S today. While it shares its name with the Ram 1500-sized Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep is billing this new entry to its lineup as a mid-size. Looking roughly similar to the Grand Cherokee in size, the Wagoneer S cuts a more athletic profile. While no performance specs were released with this announcement, Jeep has previously said it is targeting 600 horsepower, a 3.5-second 0-60 time, and up to a 400-mile range. We will have to wait and see if those numbers hold up. The Wagoneer S will maintain some off-road prowess in spite of its city looks with a Selec-Terrain dial to adjust the S for various surface conditions. Standard features will include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof and a McIntosh 19-speaker, premium flagship audio system. Interestingly, as the Jeep Wagoneer S is built on the Stellantis STLA-Large platform, Jeep could also offer this as a gasoline hybrid as well, though no hints of that have been made. On January 29th, 2024, South Korea reported on the EV4 from Kia Vice President Woo-Jeong Woo during a conference call. Kia plans on launching their EV3 in the first half of 2024 while the EV4 will now launch in early 2025. During the 2023 Kia EV Day in October 2023, Kia announced the launch schedules of these two. EV4 was planned to be released before the end of 2024 In the conference call, Vice President Joo stated “Electric vehicles are the biggest influence on Kia’s sales and profits. We plan to flexibly respond to market changes in the medium to long term. The EV3, EV4, and EV5 will be launched sequentially, and we are determined to make these three models successful.” Although Kia has not stated about the delay, they may be waiting to enhance EV4 quality. From the EV3 to EV5, they will use Kia's E-GMP electrical vehicle platform. EV3 is positioned as a small SUV, the EV4 as a compact sedan, and the EV5 as a compact SUV. Kia has announced that the EV3 to EV5 will cost from around $35,000 to $50,000, respectively. An update to the Gwangmyeong Plant 2 for electric cars has been completed after eight months of work. For now, there are no details about EV4's specifications, but it is likely to be front-wheel-drive. These inexpensive vehicles may use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a 400V system. Vietnamese automaker VinFast has been creating a lot of buzz. They launched the VF8 in the United States last summer, and their larger VF9 SUV should come later this year. Although the VF8 did not meet journalist expectations, VinFast is expanding its lineup. This week at CES in Las Vegas, VinFast unveiled two different vehicles. The first is their first pick-truck concept, the VF Wild. Meanwhile, a production-ready subcompact VF3 SUV. Styling-wise, the VF3 looks strikingly similar to the much-loved Suzuki Jimny. The VF3 is 125.6 inches long, 66.1 inches wide, and 63.8 inches tall. This would make it the smallest car sold in America. The VF3 features VinFast's V-shaped chrome trim on the front and rear along with chunky wheel arches. This comes with 16-inch wheels and decent ground clearance. Although there are no specs, VinFast is aiming for 125 miles of range. Inside is a four-seater cabin with a minimalistic design. There is a single 10-inch infotainment system behind the steering wheel and has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When folding the second row of seats, the cabin expands to 19.4 cubic feet. VinFast debuted the VF3 in Vietnam in June 2023, but the global debut was at CES. For now, the timing and deliveries of the VF3 depend on different markets. A spokesperson told Automotive News that the VF3 could be less than $20,000. If that is true, this would be the cheapest EV in the United States. View full article

After a long run of teaser images, Volvo revealed their new EX90 7-seat, all-electric SUV in Stockholm, Sweden today. This is the first in Volvo's goal of releasing one new fully electric car each year. By 2030, Volvo aims to sell only fully electric cars and be climate-neutral by 2040. That climate neutral pledge starts with the EX90 and its factories in the Charleston, South Carolina and China. Both production facilities are slated to be climate-neutral. Twin-Motor AWD With Up to 496 HP Initially offered as with a twin-motor all-wheel drive and a 111kWh battery, the EX90 can produce up to 496 horsepower and 671 lb.-ft of torque in the performance edition. A milder version offered with 408 horsepower will have a range of 300 miles to a charge. On a fast charger, the EX90 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. The Volvo EX90 supports Plug-and-Charge technology with compatible public charging stations, eliminating the need to activate the charging station with an account. All Volvo EX90s have the hardware needed to enable bi-directional charging to power your home, other electronic devices, or even charge another Volvo car. Volvo plans on enabling this technology in the future in select markets. This ability combined with a smart charging app allows EX90 owners to schedule charging at the most sustainable times, and once bi-directional charging is enabled, even use the vehicle's battery as a home power source during peak hours or sell that energy back to the grid. The sustainability of the EX90 continues beyond the powertrain. Approximately 15 percent of the steel, 25 percent of the aluminum, and 15 percent of the total plastic (105 lbs) is from recycled materials. Powerful Technology Inside The EX90's processing systems are powered by NVIDIA Drive AI platforms and Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The Snapdragon platform uses the Unreal Engine to provide fast and high-qualify graphics on the in-car screens. The 14.5-inch center infotainment screen links you to information via a 5G connection and built-in Google and many of the most popular apps from the Google Play store while also offering wireless Apple CarPlay. An available Bowers & Wilkins audio system is the first to offer Dolby Atmos in a Volvo and includes headrest speakers for immersive sound. Phone-key technology is standard on the EX90. Your smartphone serves as your key and automatically unlocks the car and starts your personalized welcome sequence as you approach. Once inside, your personal profile will be loaded. LiDAR, Cameras, and Self-Stopping Safety Volvo has been associated with safety for decades and the EX90 aims to raise that expectation further. With its powerful computing systems, it is designed to learn about you and the world around you. New state-of-the-art cameras, radar, and lidar work in conjunction with over the air updates and data. These systems have the ability to see small objects on the road hundreds of yards ahead while inside the EX90 can monitor concentration, distraction, or fatigue and alert you with gentle nudge. If the worst happens and you are unable to respond, the EX90 will bring itself safely to a stop. And while not yet available, the EX90 is hardware ready for semi-autonomous driving in the future. The EX90 is expected to be available well-equipped for under $80,000 and Volvo is accepting pre-orders for the 2024 EX90 starting today for delivery in early 2024. All US market EX90s will be built in Volvo's South Carolina assembly plant. Check out the Volvo EX90 photo gallery for exterior, interior, and design sketch details. View full article

Jaguar has reportedly been given the go-ahead for their electric SUV project. Autocar reports that the vehicle, possibly named E-Pace will be revealed later this year and go into production in 2018. Sources at Jaguar said the vehicle was going be a Range Rover, known as the Evoque-e. However, the project was moved over to Jaguar. This little bit of information confirms a part of a rumorpile story from last month talking about Jaguar's future EV plans. The E-Pace will be smaller than the new F-Pace and feature more aggressive styling. Power will come two electric motors - one on the front axle with 114 horsepower and one on the rear with 195 horsepower. Total output is said to be around 308 horsepower. The battery size is unknown. Prototypes running around had a 70 kWh battery. But Autocar expects a larger battery to deliver a range of 280 to 300 miles. Source: Autocar View full article
