    Cadillac CT6 Reveals Itself In New Commerical

      Surprise! Cadillac shows off the CT6 in a new ad

    Cadillac has apparently pulled a page of out of the Nissan ad playbook as they have revealed the upcoming 2016 CT6 in a new ad during the Oscars tonight.

    The ad - titled The Daring: No Regrets - features a number folks the worlds of fashion, finance, technology, and film whose common beginnings are contrasted with their exceptional accomplishments. Following this, the ad asks "How dare a 112-year-old carmaker reinvent itself," and out rolls the CT6. The vehicle takes the current styling of the CTS and stretches it out length and width-wise.

    We'll have more information and clearer pictures when the CT6 debuts at the New York Auto Show in April. The ad is below.

    Well... I'm not seeing anyting making me say WOW.  But I didn't expect to be wowed honestly.  I'm guessing the "wow" will come with what's under the hood/sheetmetal and on the inside.

    Looks very crisp and angular, and a little bit blocky as well, yet overall quite elegant. To be honest it reminded me of the Audi A8 which is my current favorite of the German 3 flagships. For that alone I'm leaning towards liking the CT6 a lot already. Can't wait for the April unveiling! :)

    Interesting, Have to say the commercial hit the nail on the head as I am totally intrigued with seeing more of the car.

     

    What is the engine? What does the interior look like, want to see more of the body for details.

     

    Over all I want more! :P

    Johan said in an interview that the 2.0 turbo 4 would be standard and the 3.6 liter twin turbo optional. Basically the same power trains in the CTS. He did say in the future there would be a twin turbo V8. I'd imagine that is their V-series.

    Makes you wonder if this is more of an XTS replacement, can't be an S-class fighter with a 4-cylinder. Even the A7 and CLS have boosted sixes and eights, so what is their competitor?

    That 4 cylinder is a diesel with 369 lb-ft of torque though and that was five years ago. I think they pair that engine with a hybrid system now for Euro market cars.

    There has been a V12 S-class since 1991. Without 12 cylinders you are a pretender, not a contender. Sorry to Lexus, Jaguar and Maserati.

    Moving the goal posts again, aren't we? A 4 is a 4 doesn't matter if it's a diesel or paired with hybrid and doesn't matter if it is Euro only.

     

    Got it, S-Class was a pretender before that and didn't you say it was the best vehicle since Roman Empire's existence? So a pretender was your best vehicle?

    Happening to catch some of the Oscars when this commercial came on, I knew it was the new big Caddy - I like it, I think it looks sharp. If they make one in a RWD Big Block V8 Coupe, I'm liking it even more...

    Well some will be happy and some will be disappointed with this car when it arrives. It is a next step evolution of the styling and technology but will not be a full revolution that some expect but will not get.

     

    This will be a very good car but we must remember this is not part of the new Cadillac since it was mostly done by the time GM decided to go all in and invest in Cadillac what it needs. This is why we have talk now that this is not the flagship and there will be a CT 7-8-9.

     

    What we will find here is a very capable car that will have refined styling on the same theme but will be much lighter than most expect. The suspension tuning will be first class and the interior will be unlike you have ever seen in a GM car. It will see advancements not seen in quality and technology.

     

    The real treat will be the TT V8 when it arrives later.

     

    Now this car will help hold the segment till GM gets to the cars that will be over it. These will see really big investment and we will get much greater return in the product that will be produced. That one will be the revolutionary car. But because work has just started it will be 2020 before we see it or the  coupe.

     

    The key to this car needs to be refinement. They need to get the little things right. While Cue is not a bad system it is a difficult system to grasp for many people in less than 5 mins. If they work to make system interphase easier and other small details that needed addressed on the CTS and ATS they should have a car here that can go toe to toe.

     

    Now with that said the next cars to come not only need to go toe to toe but they need to clearly be the better car. GM has now gotten into the game and now they must dominate the segments. You do that and remove any question that you should be there to anyone critic or friend.

     

    This is not the Dare car yet.

     

    In the mean time the coming SUV's and CUV will make Cadillac even more profitable. This segment makes up 12% of car segment sales but makes 50% of the profit. That is why GM finally has gone in. These are the pick ups of the car segment but at a much lower volume.

     

    This is also why Ford saved Lincoln when it was on the block. Now their problem has been no one there has fully committed to make them more than a high volume discount luxury car.

     

    So far the CT6 is about what I expected a good solid step forward into the future to even better things yet to come.

    I "dare" Cadillac to keep this Dare campaign going until 2019 when the CT7 or CT8 arrives.  By then there will be a new slogan, and they will have some new plan.   Eventually one of these plans has to work, Cadillac doesn't really have infinite tries here.  I get that Rome wasn't built in a day, and I don't think Cadillac will even end up as poor off as Lincoln, but how long will GM pour money in to a brand that doesn't get sales.  Eventually the bean counters may force a Lincoln strategy where they just gloss up Chevy's and sell stuff like the Escalade and a Cadillac Equinox because those are easy and high margin.

    Didn't Cadillac sell 208,xxx vehicles in 2014? That's not worthy of turning the factory lights on?

     

    5, 6, & 7 series are old, old, old and lead at nothing. Frankly, stoic & dated design is not pulling any buyers into the showroom there, either- 5 sells OK but the 6/7 is finding it rough going. With the usual turn-over @ BMW, having something new to offer the demographic is sound business. Besides smk, what would YOU propose, a triple-turbo V8?

    This is the same spitball thrown against the Cadillac wall time & time again; if they don't sell a TTV8, Cadillac is "not competing", if they do, it's "why bother, other cars do". Fascinating how I never read this anywhere RE -say- a Jaguar SUV. So tiresome.

    The old 5-series still outsells the new Lexus GS and CTS.  The 7-series is bland and bloated, and of course it has terrible sales, it is up against the best car in the world.   BMW does make a triple turbo diesel inline six in Europe, but of course, they don't sell it here.  Maybe they should to add some spice to the 5 and 7 series cars.

     

    Jaguar makes loads of SUVs, they are called the Land Rover.  That is why I always thought a Jaguar SUV was stupid, it is one company, and you wouldn't make a Land Rover 2-seat roadster, so why make a Jaguar SUV.

    • Jaguar doesn't make Land Rovers, Land Rover does. These are supposed to be separate brands- who cares what other brands the corporation has, except the BoD office & the bean counters? This is like saying mercedes shouldn't build the e-class and the CLS since they share power trains & platforms ; why not (profit/losses excepted)?

    You have to realize that the key here is not total sales but profits.Cadillac is no longer a volume K mart luxury brand and does not need high volumes to survive.

    What they need to do is build cars that have high enough profit margins that will make money.

     

    How many years did Cadillac out sold volume wise in this country Benz and BMW but it did not run them off and they continued to build and  make money in this market.

     

    The is only one future for Cadillac as there is little money in a cheap luxury car unless you move a lot of cars and that is difficult. Lincoln did it with Fleet sales of the Town Car and once those sales dropped they and floundered since with near death.

     

    This is a plan you just have to give them the time to do what needs done and even if they are still number three in sales you need to look at the bottom line and if they are making a profit. I think you will find they will be. This is not one of those races where you have to have the biggest volume to still win in this segment.

     

    I expect these to be the most profitable cars at GM for years to come and they will not get axed as if they are bringing more dollars per unit they will get what they need.

     

    As for marketing the Dare is only the start. Their plan is like a play and this is act one. This is to challenge people to look at Cadillac and understand what their new mission is. In the past their message was just a mottled mix of a geek in a ATS, Dancing Robots and out running a mass of Arrows. Not really any true message or coherent image being displayed.

     

    Now that they have Dared the public watch for them to focus on what they are doing with their models. We will see like with Benz and BMW a focus on not just performance but safety, luxury, technology, styling, image and sex.

     

    The building of an image of the product and what it will do for the customer takers work to build and you have to earn the trust of the public.

     

    This is why we have seen resistance to discounting the present cars as do you want to show up at the club in the car that is Discount Luxury? That would be like buying your suit at K mart. While some see you as thrifty other will see it as a sign of failure if you do not live large.

     

    There is a lot of work to do and lots of things to accomplish yet. No matter where Cadillac ranks in sales by 2020-2025 the real goal is profits and if they are making money that is all that should be expected. This is the most profitable segment in the auto class and it gives you the option of just making money as a priority and if you take a sales lead all the better. On the other hand high volume low profit segments like Chevy have to move product to make the profit and they have no options here. They have to sell to make any money.

     

    Also you do not want to over sell true luxury anyways as if you do you will end up with your product in places that will damage it's image. In this class you want to be seen at Ruth Chis not White Castle or Habit.

    But to make these big profits you need high prices.  The Escalade is where Cadillac's profit comes from because it has high price, and is based off an existing Chevy, and the Tahoe itself is a high margin vehicle.   I wonder if the ATS and CTS run on big margins, because they don't really command top of segment pricing, and their global volume isn't that high so they don't have the economies of scale that the Germans have.

    But they have a higher transaction price than a German (BMW), and it's growing at a faster rate. And unlike the Germans, Cadillac does not have a gun to its head to compete for Camry buyers, ala the CLA/ sub-3-series cars. The Germans only WISH they were in a similar position where cheap FWD appliances weren't necessary.

     

    BTW- the Escalade is not "based on an existing Tahoe"; these vehicles are developed in the same program @ the same time, they are specific variants off of an engineering/design program. One is not an altered version of the other.

    The Tahoe and Escalade have very few shared parts.   Frame, transmission, some window glass, some wires under the dash, airbag actuators.   Not even the rear view mirror is shared anymore.   The Escalade uses better (freer rolling) wheel bearings. 

     

    Oh yeah... and transaction prices on the Escalade are up... way up.... They've jumped $15k - $20k per unit. ..... and Cadillac can't build them fast enough.

     

     

    Back to the CT6, from this short glimpse...  Regardless of the hardware, it doesn't look large enough to go up against the S-Class. It looks more CLS sized.   Not that it is a bad thing for Cadillac to play in that ballfield,  I was just expecting something more S-Class in size.

    I thought I read once that the length was 200 inches, so the CT6 could be slightly smaller than the XTS.  But the CT6 doesn't have 4-door coupe styling, so it isn't really an A7 or CLS competitor.  Probably this will be sized like the standard LS460 or short wheel base Jaguar XJ.  I am curious what they position this car against.

     

    It is believed it will have a new 3.0 liter twin turbo V6, which will lead to GM's new line of V6s so I'd imagine the 3.6 will start getting phased out at the end of the decade.

    The new car will have the new 3.0 TT and a V8 TT. Not sure if the 3.6 will be the base engine or not yet.

     

    The 3.6 is on the way out and will be around a few more years but the end is coming. The new V6 family is lighter and more refined. They will also get a little better MPG and the TT version will have better economy and the same of better power.

    There is no such thing as a 4-door coupe, thus neither the A7 nor the CLS have it either.  The A7 is a 4-door A6 hatchback and the CLS is just a 4-door E-Class Sedan fastback or a 2-Door E-class hardtop coupe.

     

     

    If there is such a thing as a 4-door coupe, then Oldsmobile beat Mercedes to the idea by a decade.


    The new car will have the new 3.0 TT and a V8 TT. Not sure if the 3.6 will be the base engine or not yet.

     

    The 3.6 is on the way out and will be around a few more years but the end is coming. The new V6 family is lighter and more refined. They will also get a little better MPG and the TT version will have better economy and the same of better power.

     

    Pardon?  There is a new advanced version of it right around the corner.

    I know there is a new version  but I do not expect it to have a super long life as more focus will be placed on the 3.0 liter. If you take note most MFG have taken to specific size engines as they give the best in performance, economy and refinement. The 3.0 TT  is that engine just as so many have taken to the 4.0 TT and the 2.0 T. these are the engines I expect that will be in place once GM goes to Cadillac specific engines.

     

    GM will continue the 3.6 for more than anything the Colorado and Canyon and will add more refinement as they are not really close to class leading anymore and are very old engines. Not bad engines but not what they need to be any  longer.

     

    As for the 4 door coupes it is a styling tend and that is what they call them. The contradiction of terms is there but it really is all about the coupe like styling of the roof line and not the door count. Hence the 4 door coupe. You can argue the point all you like but that is what the MFG call it. All they are trying to do is give the coupe like styling that people love with the versatility of the sedan people expect. It will never fully replace the normal sedan as many do not like the low roof line.

     

    So the term 4 door coupe is really a hybrid of styling that has a name for marketing. Nothing more and nothing less. Just a way to try to get people into cars they normally would not buy as they have poor rear seat access while giving them a styling look they like.

    GM has Beat MB to pretty much everything at one time or another. They squandered away the chance to go the distance but has since come back around to where if done right they can in the near future surpass MB I believe.

    The Aurora was more sedan, although both generations were good looking cars.

     

    That CLS looks better with age, that was 10 years ago and it still looks better than that awful 6-series Gran Coupe thing.

    CLS has a notably higher beltline, and it appears to have a slightly lower roofline, giving obviously shorter side glass. This is where hopeful marketers are focusing on to give a boost to yet another sedan by trying to make the '4-dr coupe' moniker stick.

     

    There's a difference in it vs. the Aurora, but it's in no way a new body designation. Olds could use a 2" drop, also. ;)

     

    I LIKE the CLS profile, design-wise. I have always said it should have been the s-class because it was far more fresh than the ultra-conservative S, but the livery market would never take to it; the s-class leans very heavily on that for fleet sales. 

     

    CLS is still a 4-dr sedan, nothing more.

    Unless you can hit your head on the door frame getting in the back and it touching the rear window it does not count. LOL!

     

    The truth is it is all about the lower roof line and styling. Just look at the green house and you will see what it takes to use the term 4 door coupe. It is just a styling trend and some people buy in and some stick to the traditional car because they do not want to lose the head room.

    The 4.3 is not going into the mid size trucks or they would have already done it. You will see a term with the 3.6 as it is and then the revamped one but in time I see them going smaller with a turbo and non turbo versions of a 3.0. I expect the power to be the same as we have now with more torque and a little more MPG. 

     

    Turbo engines will be in or offered in just about ever model out there at some point as the market is going to smaller size and turbo engines to gain MPG. We are just about there now. Who would have ever expected the Malibu Regal and other models to be only 4 cylinder with turbo options.

     

    Unless GM can learn to sell a lot more mini cars the larger ones will have to find MPG somewhere as they are not even close to the future regulations.

     

    the fact is Turbo chargers will be very common going into the future and not just on performance models or up scale models.

    I don't doubt that turbo charged engines are going to be more and more prevalent. I'm just saying that a 3.0TT is not going to be the engine to replace the current 3.6.   I think we'd see a Turbo-4 take up that role.  Probably something like a 2.3T similar to what Ford is doing.

    If we're going to accept the premise that a 4-door fastback is a 4-door coupe, then yes, Oldsmobile did beat Mercedes there by 10 years.

     

     

    The 4.3 is not going into the mid size trucks or they would have already done it. You will see a term with the 3.6 as it is and then the revamped one but in time I see them going smaller with a turbo and non turbo versions of a 3.0. I expect the power to be the same as we have now with more torque and a little more MPG. 

     

    Turbo engines will be in or offered in just about ever model out there at some point as the market is going to smaller size and turbo engines to gain MPG. We are just about there now. Who would have ever expected the Malibu Regal and other models to be only 4 cylinder with turbo options.

     

    Unless GM can learn to sell a lot more mini cars the larger ones will have to find MPG somewhere as they are not even close to the future regulations.

     

    the fact is Turbo chargers will be very common going into the future and not just on performance models or up scale models.

     

     

    I don't doubt that turbo charged engines are going to be more and more prevalent. I'm just saying that a 3.0TT is not going to be the engine to replace the current 3.6.   I think we'd see a Turbo-4 take up that role.  Probably something like a 2.3T similar to what Ford is doing.

     

     

    A turbo 4 might at some point but I am thinking more of a non Turbo 3.0 that has better economy but as much power as the present 3.0. I do not expect more power just more economy with vehicles like this.

     

    As for the Turbo 4 I would have to see a weight reduction before I would recommend that one. I have a 300 HP Turbo in a 3200 pound vehicle and it is fine economy wise and power wise but in a vehicle as heavy as the Colorado I could see no real advantage to MPG here.

     

    Lets put it this way. I love my 2.0 Turbo but I would not love it near as much in my GMC Terrain. I would wager while it has more power and torque the MPG would not be much better than the V6 is now and the performance would be similar. 

     

    Mass is a killer in truck MPG and Ford just proved it with their new truck. They just got their weight to just below the others and lost a ton of weight but they still have not gained much in MPG.

    That is why I expect the half ton class to fundamentally change in the future.

    Now this is what I am expecting to see and this is my own wild ass theory so  keep that in mind. But much of this is bases on things I have heard people say and rumors about future production in different segments and present moves being made today. To me it is just something to think about and keep in mind when you see some of this stuff going on.

     

    I have a feeling the smaller trucks like the Colorado and Canyon will be what many makers will go in trying to get people to move in one of two ways from the Half Ton Truck.  They will try to get many to move to this smaller class that is nearly capable, easier to drive and will do about anything they need with smaller engines and less weight.  Now for those who still need a full size truck or a V8 the 3/4 ton will still be available and will serve as the full size truck to those who really have to have one or need one.

     

    The Half Ton has hard CAFE coming up and it may even get worse by the time it arrives. The automakers have hinted that by 2018 they may try a move to ask the government to back off but it is getting harder to even get conservatives to back these plans anymore.

    So with that said the only way to get more MPG is size and mass hence the smaller trucks ands smaller engines.

     

    Now the 3/4 ton trucks are not subjected to the same regulations at this point so we may still have a good chance to keep the larger trucks in play but the problem will be at a price. These trucks will be offered but the prices will continue to go up if they have a V8 as they will not sell in the volume as the half tons have sold.

     

    You may note of late how much GM has been putting into the 3/4 ton trucks of late as for so long these were the forgotten work trucks. Today High Country and Denali editions flourish and we are seeing options on them that we would never have seen even 5 years ago.

     

    I also think we may see a smaller truck yet under the Colorado. I hope and pray they do not do a FWD but that may be part of the deal? I just have the feeling a smaller econo like hauler may reappear at some point as there is a segment that still longs for a S10 like truck.

     

    GM has learned with the SUV segment that the CUV is just as popular and very profitable as it is sold along side the larger brothers. The Truck segment could easily be broken down in class as it no longer is one size fit all anymore and they really need it to be that way to preserve the segment going forward.

    At one time I saw where a GM engineer spoke on the large half ton SUV and speculated the day was not far off it could be laid to rest just because of the growth of the CUV and the coming regulations. He said it was not the plan but it was a consideration that could come about if need be. That was a coupe years ago and would not happen till after 2018 at some point.

     

    That is just my WAG and to be honest the companies may not have it all sorted out internally either at this point so a lot could happen that they do not even plan on yet in 10 years. They do know their most profitable segment is under the gun and they need to find a way to displace it with products that will fill  the needs or get the MPG they need going forward.

    Sorry if you don't hit your head getting in the back seat it is not a 4 door coupe. Been there done that in both cars and there was no issue getting into the  Olds so it  is just a regular sedan styling.

     

    The car has to have a ergonomic flaw to have 4 door coupe styling.  Just part of the deal as you have to sacrifice something for the styling. That is what Coupe means anymore. It could be defined as what ergonomic did you give up?

    The 3.0 TT V6 that is all new is really the key engine for this car, because that will be the volume engine.  The V6 will have to have the power, fuel economy, and NVH refinement to beat the Europeans or the Korean V8s if this car gets compared to the Equus/K900 at all.  Execution on the new V6 is important.  They obviously need a V8 and a diesel, but those will probably be lower volume.

    2 liter turbo is a deal breaker for me unless they are using it as a generator for a VOLT style Power Train.

     

    I really expect at some point the base of the CT6 to be used in some kind of a Tesla competitor. Not sure if it will be a Voltec like drive line or go all out like the Bolt and do just plug in..  With the light weight of the Omega it is prime to do this kind of a car. GM has the electric drive systems already and the car is large enough to hold a big battery pack and Tesla proved people will pay for a car like this already. It will not be a big volume car like the gas but it would be a segment with slow but steady growth.

     

    What ever GM has it will appear like the Bolt did at Detroit and you won't see it coming.

    So far, I like what I see, but its not surprising given that they haven't really had a model that wasn't good looking.

     

    With that said, I'm ready to be disappointed. It seems like it may be just a little too conventional... like a longer, matured CTS. Maybe its intentional, given that the new name will likely be confused with that car. I can see dealers now... "Yes, Sir, here we have our stretched CTS, thats what the six stands for." It's bound to happen, and depending on what details we're missing out on with these blurry screenshots, its not likely to wow. That's not to say it won't do so in other areas such as intelligent engineering or interior trimmings. I'm still eager to see full reveal to see how it manages to stand up as Cadillac's closest thing to flagship sedan since the 'ye olde' Fleetwood. Cadillac really has nothing to lose at this point, and things can only go up from here. 

     

    Now, regarding all this gibberish about coupes. Yes, the term is stupid, and yes, the designs are wonderful. Also, I can see Drew's point, especially if you consider it in terms and 1990's design language. Sedans were rather upright, and even the coupes had fairly low beltlines, thus you will notice a difference comparing it to a CLS. Taking that into consideration, it is still not quite as radical, with a more standard look. Definitely dramatic for its time either way.

     

    Finally, I must say, I enjoy when someone goes out and makes their biases more obvious than usual with endless double-standards.

    Their naming scheme should have been ATS -->LaSalle (coupe/convertible), CTS -->Seville (Seville coupe), XTS --> Calais, Eldorado would be their 6-series competitor and grand touring coupe (could do a 4 door coupe Eldo even) and Fleetwood for their large sedan.

    SMK you will not get any disagreement from many of us here who do not like the CT naming system and wish they had gone back to their heritage names as a superior way to catalog their auto class.

     

    Escalade is a perfect example of how it has a brand name and Cadillac will be stupid in the future if they kill this name plate to go with the stupid CUV names.

    I don't think anyone walking into a Cadillac dealership will be any more confused with the 'quarter-size-increments' BMW X1, X3, X5 or 1,2,3,4,5, or the 68 different alpha-numeric MB models available. Esp with such gaffes as putting the nose of a $30K econo-appliance onto your flagship coupe. There is mass homogenization running the auto stylistic world these days...

    I get the nostalgia of the names for some folks holding on to the past. But the truth is a great car makes itself know no matter the name or number. The product sells the car no the name.

     

    When was the last time you heard someone say I have to buy this car because it has a cool name? Oh that car is called Lemans I have to buy it because I just love the name? The fact is the product itself sells the car.

     

    Here is what sells a car in this segment not necessarily in this order.

     

    Visual impact.

    Technology

    Comfort

    Handling

    Image

    Power

    Options

    ETC

     

    There are more but the fact is no matter how you name it or number it as long as you build it right it will sell. BMW, Audi and Benz have proven that over years that if no matter if they name it, number it or letter it the car sells if they get it right. If they screw up the product it does not sell. No more name was iconic in Germany than Maybach but yet the car tanked as they just tried to fool people with a Mercedes sedan with more options. The car was never right for the segment and even a iconic name in Germany could not even save it in Germany.

     

    A great car can make itself know and should make itself relevant and known even if it had no name or number on it.

     

    The fact is too much is made by many about names. If you are down to relying on a name to sell a car then  you really have a bad car.

    People buy Escalades for what it is, how it looks and what it represents not what it is called. The Escalade has cultivated an image that connects with people. The folks who buy these could get by just as well with a Chevy or GMC but the fact it is the top end model and only those with the means to afford one have one is what sells this vehicle. This is what sells so many BMW and Benz as it is how the car hangs an image on the owner or at least they perceives it hangs on the owner.

     

    The bottom line is the car makes the name iconic not the name making the car an icon.

     

    Look back to Cadillac's history they have many iconic cars and all were numbered models. If you look at those cars and see the attributes of the models are what they presented to the owner and what made their owners special and today an Icon.

     

    Name became more or less a marketing tool in the 50's that tried to conjure up images of far away places in the face of higher volumes and mass marketing. It made for some cool advertising but most owners had no idea if the car was named for Seville Spain or Seville Ohio.  Don't laugh I once heard the claim of Seville Ohio by a Cadillac owner.

    • Tired of the Voom, Voom, Voom of a performance Borla exhaust, the wife asked for a new ride. This is my journey of what I experienced in working to buy/lease an EV in 2024. Let me first start off by saying that I am in no way a normal sized human. At 6 foot 6 inches 300 lbs with a 40 inch long legs, I am much larger and big bone than most Americans. My wife being of Korean descent is also larger than most at 5 foot 8 inches compared to the average female height of 5 foot in Korea. The USA census has the average female at 5 foot 4 inches tall and the average male at 5 foot 9 inches tall. With this knowledge of size, subcompacts, compacts are totally out of the question. I know mid-size to full-size is where our EV choices will be. My journey started with me asking myself, what are the Pro's and Cons of buying versus leasing an Electric Vehicle (EV). This image above pretty much wraps up what I came up with for leasing versus buying an EV and there was just one last thing to consider, technology. Battery Technology, controller boards and software are all in their infancy and as such will be probably changing greatly over the next few years. Do I take on the risk of buying and having the OEM stop updates to my EV or do I lease and go with trading it in and getting current technology in a new EV two or three years later? 2023 was an explosive year for auto companies as everyone was pushing to get an EV on the marketplace. Some made it with less than stellar results and others delivered. Trucks, SUVs and cars pretty much allowed one to have a selection of what style of EV they wanted. For my wife and I we had already decided to ignore the cars and focus on the SUVs and Trucks. With that in mind we made up the following list of EV companies to consider. BMW Cadillac Ford Genesis Hyundai Kia Mercedes Rivian Tesla A busy weekend ensued and the experiences of driving so many different EVs showed where some succeeded and others fell short. Clearly some are still holding onto ICE (internal combustion engine) legacy engineering approach and others delivered on what is called a clean sheet design. Here was our weekend experience with the following brands: BMW - iX was a nice drive, interface experience was fine, it actually had plenty of room in the front, a little tighter in the back but for short drives, another person my size could sit behind me and would be fine. Exterior is a styling love / hate experience. Wife is not a fan of the huge kidney bean grill; she said it looked like a pig nose on steroids. The side profile was fine, and the back end looked like it was pinched in molding the design. Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported, overall, it would still be considered. Salesperson was polite and not pushy. Cadillac - Lyriq was the quietest drive of the day, Cadillac has nailed it, fast, solid and overall, a luxury EV ride. Interior over all was good, a little tight on head space with the sky roof, but the seat goes down far enough to adjust for that, interface of the dash was good. Android Auto / Apple Carplay is supported for the 2024 model year but is supposedly going away for the 2025 model year being replaced with the GM play store. Exterior styling my wife was fine with, better front end looks than the BMW. Would be on the consideration list. Salesperson was polite and not pushy. Nice balance of buttons to touch screen. Ford - Test drove an F150 Lighting and the Mach e, interior was fine, she liked the space and comfort. Was hoping for a midsize pickup truck, so ruled out the Lighting. Mach e she liked, both fit comfortably and clearly anyone could sit behind me my size and smaller. Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported. Major dislike was the salesperson who was very pushy and made comments that told my wife he was a male chauvinistic pig. He actually told me to man up as the wife would drive whatever I decided since I was the man. Big mistake as we do everything in equal partnership, so his approach failed to work. Mach e is still in consideration, we will go with another salesperson, maybe even another dealership. Genesis - GV60 / GV70, exterior was fine, though the GV60 she did say reminded her of a jellybean. Interior was very luxurious, but no one could sit behind me in the GV60, would be fine for short trips in the GV70. Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported. Interface was easy to use. She loved the interior but had reservations on the exterior but could not put her finger on it. GV70 would be in consideration. Nice balance of buttons to touch screen. Hyundai - Ioniq 5 SUV. She was not wowed by the exterior, felt it was sitting a bit low, bunker style, yet interior had plenty of room, Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported. Solid candidate to consider. Salesperson was nice, normal pushy attempts to have us make a decision, but as we told him, we still had others to test drive. Nice balance of buttons to touch screen. Kia - EV6 / EV9 - Exterior was not bad, was clearly different than many of the other EVs we had seen. EV6 is super tight inside for me, was fine for the wife as was the interface of their dashboard. No one could sit behind me. EV6 was out she said. EV9 was great, more room inside than our Escalade. Anyone could sit behind me, spacious for both of us and would transport anyone in comfort. Liked the exterior styling much more than many of the others we had test drove to date. Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported. Salesperson super nice and not pushy. Solid candidate. Nice balance of buttons to touch screen. Mercedes - EQS, interior was nice, driving was the second quietest behind the Cadillac. Interface was fine, but lower menus seemed cluttered. We liked the interior for the most part, the hard part of this EV was the exterior lack of any real styling. The worst Jellybean style around. Android Auto / Apple Carplay supported, Salesperson was super nice and not pushy, but as we told him when we thanked him for his time, the auto needs an identity. Wife said for her daily driver, this was a hard pass. Rivian - R1T / R1S - Exterior was a win for the wife right up there with the EV9 from Kia. Interior was also a big win as it was spacious and comfortable front and back. Interface was easy to use, over all a nice balance of buttons to touch screen. Sadly, Rivian is off the list as she asked the counselor about Android Auto / Apple Carplay, no support, no plan to support it. Must buy your apps from the Rivian store, failure big time we felt. Bummer as Rivian was a leading candidate for us. Tesla - Due to friends who have Tesla, even with her knowing my dislike for the Tesla CEO, she wanted to check out the Y / X. Overall the experience in talking with their counselor was good, good people skills, they went over the interface with the wife, in the meantime she saw that while I could fit in the Y, no one could sit behind me. in the X I could also fit, but only about 2 inches of space from the back of the seat to the back seat. Wife asked about Android Auto and Apple Carplay, they told her no plans, they offered her a test drive and she passed. Told me it was a bit weird in how you used the single interface in the center of the dash and a few other things, minimalist failure to her. Pass on Tesla. Now that we had spent a long weekend driving so many EVs, I asked her what her thoughts were on what she was leaning towards. She told me give her a few weeks to digest the information and she would let me know. While the wife digested the EV overload of info, I moved onto researching the EV technology of these auto makers. Auto EV Platform Info 2024.pdf One key item is that I do not want to be behind the 8 ball of technology standards. In this case, I am talking about companies that are on 400V platforms versus 800V platforms. in this case, this brings us down to the following, Cadillac, Genesis, Hyundai and Kia as everyone else is on 400V platforms and already have announced that 2025 and 2026 model years will be the conversion to new 800V platforms. Knowing my wife, one does not rush her, when she is ready, she will let me know, weeks passed by and finally one day at breakfast, she said I have an answer for you. I like the Cadillac Lyriq and the Kia EV9 the best. I want heated seats, steering wheel and AWD, otherwise I could care less about other features. In looking on the websites for my local dealerships, the Cadillac dealership that I have bought from before was sold during the pandemic to Brotherton Cadillac of Renton. So Brotherton Cadillac NW is the dealership near me, and the wife and I reviewed all the Lyriqs and settled on the following:  Cadillac Lyriq Sport 2 AWD Celestial Metallic. This paint color is a color shifting paint that covers purple to silver / grey spectrum depending on the light of the day and especially as I discovered sun versus rain. In the sun it is a radiant purplish color and under dark raining weather a serious silver/dark grey.     Chuck Olson Kia which is less than a mile away from Brotherton Cadillac NW on HWY 99 here in the greater Seattle area had a nice assortment EV9s in Wind, Land and GT versions. They had the traditional blue GT and an Ice Green that the wife really liked. So I settled on the Ice Green to test drive and see what the final price would be. Again, like the Lyriq, the ICE Green metallic paint job has a dominant blueness but turns various shades of lite green to greenish blue depending on the light of the day. At this point we get to the nitty gritty of the dealing, Price paid, rebates, final pricing to determine what the deal ends up being. Over dinner, the wife and I discussed the options of buying versus leasing and to both of us, it made sense at this early stage to lease rather than buy an EV. The addition of the IRA $7,500 rebate also played into our decision. For Cadillac the Lyriq qualifies again for the full $7,500 rebate whether you buy or lease, in the case of the Kia, due to manufacturing in Korea, the EV9 only qualifies for the rebate if you lease. This fall, Kia and Hyundai start manufacturing in the US allowing their EVs to get the full $7,500 rebate if buying. For me, I wanted to see what a zero down Lease deal would be as a starting point before paying down. Depending on credit rating, most auto leases require anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 down and of course the more you pay down, the lower your monthly payment is. The nature of my work allows me flexibility and as such, I was able to go on a Friday morning at 10am to the Brotherton Cadillac NW to test drive the Lyriq Sport 2 edition. In fact the EV is still on the lot now almost two weeks later. New 2024 Blue Cadillac 4dr Sport w/1SJ LYRIQ for Sale North of Seattle, VIN = 1GYKPVRL1RZ127387 (brothertoncadillacnw.com) Upon driving onto the lot, I parked and saw the Lyriq as it shinned in the morning sun giving that purplish glow that my wife liked. I walked up and checked it out externally and it looked great. After about 10 minutes of checking the Lyriq out, I was still not approached by anyone, so I went into the sales floor and asked if I could talk with someone about a Lyriq. First salesperson said I needed to talk to their EV specialist and walked away, a second person came out of a side hallway and asked if I was being taken care of and I told them what just happened, and I was still standing here. He did apologize and asked me to wait just a moment and he would get the specialist.  A young man came out, introduced himself and asked me if I had any special model in mind and if I wanted to take a test drive. I took him out to show him the one I was interested in. He took down their special code and left to get the keys. At this point, over all experience with the dealership was not bad, neutral for me as it is nothing personal, just business and some do it better than others. The sales rep returned with the keys, he opened up the Lyriq and took me on a tour of the auto pointing out many of the features and explaining the functional differences between how it works on the EV versus an ICE auto. This I have to say was very welcomed as it showed me the man had knowledge of the auto and could show / explain to me how it was to be used. I appreciate this as my wife is not a tech person but show her how to do it and she it set, so this was a good start. We did the traditional driver's license and insurance validation, signed on the dotted line and I then took off for a road trip in the Lyriq. Android auto works as expected, over all interface was easy to understand and use with a nice balance of common used items in physical form right under the screen. Steering wheel had all the expected buttons and dials for using the auto. The Noise canceling of the auto gave it a quiet ride that I have never experienced before and still to this day is the best yet of all the EVs I have test driven.  Negative of the Lyriq is that it is not a true SUV, you sit lower more car like and headroom while I would be fine, required me to drop the seat to the bottom of it's settings which makes my driving position even lower. Knowing that this is the wife's auto, I returned to the dealership to talk price. Here is where things started to go south and why people hate dealerships. I tried my best to negotiate in good faith for a fair price on the EV. The dealership replied that it was the hottest ride available and as such no discounts, you paid the price they had on the auto which was MSRP plus $5,000. I informed them that no I was not going to pay over MSRP for an auto that shows over 300 are available in the greater Seattle area.  The Dealership then said fine, they would sell it at MSRP to me. Knowing that I get $7,500 off I was not put off by this but also not happy that they would not go down on the price. I told them at this point I was interested in leasing and wanted to see what the lease rate would be for 15,000 miles a year for three years. Here is where it got ugly.  The sales rep came back to me and had a handwritten piece of paper with a TRD (Total after Rebates and Discounts) price, Lease money factor number, Residual price and monthly payment including tax. The monthly payment was a little over $1,200 a month. I asked to see firm numbers showing the selling price minus the IRA rebate, tax, etc. all lined up so that I can understand the numbers. I was informed this is how leases are done, your rebate is figured into the residual amount and that this is all the accurate info they provide the buyer. If I agree to this, they can then process and sell me the Lyriq. I told the man that this handwritten paper did not explain any of what I asked to verify and see, so they would need to properly print out or hand write all details in order for me to make a decision. The rep left and was gone for about 10 minutes and then came back with another salesperson who reminded me of a traditional wild west snake oil salesman who tried to use the same paper I was shown and yet tell me I was not able to understand the complexities of leases and should trust him on this awesome monthly cost. When I told him I would not accept that vague random info, he then moved into the terrible game of "What can you afford a month?" Here is where many people either give up and accept or leave as they feel overwhelmed, I on the other hand laughed and told him that I would not play his game. Show me the valid real numbers with a final price on the Lyriq before processing for the Lease monthly amount.  My wife always told me I was a very frustrating person when it came to buying an auto as I would push for facts and have on more than one occasion made salespeople cry when they could not get their way playing their monthly afford game. This is how people get ripped off and taken advantage of. The two folks left and came back with the sales manager who tried again with the paper to spin a different tale. At this point, I said fine, I would consider this as I needed to talk with the wife, and she would need to drive the auto anyway before we would buy.  Leaving the Cadillac dealership, I drove south to Chuck Olson Kia, figured I would see how the EV9 drove again and see what kind of deal I could get. Arriving at the dealership, I saw the EV9 I was interested in on the lot, looked it over and turned around to see if I can get some help and a young man greeted me and said he was with another customer, but would let another salesperson know I was looking at that EV9. Only a few minutes later, the sales rep came out, greeted me and had the keys so he opened up the EV and showed me the SUV.  Here the experience was similar in that we took the EV9 in Ice Green for a drive. As I drove it, I was informed about the various features and how they all worked. An overview that was enjoyable as I drove the near silent EV locally. I did notice that it was not as quiet as the Lyriq, but most would not really notice the difference, everything else on the road was far louder. We returned to the dealership and sat down; I asked the rep for the best price on this EV9 he could give me. He left to talk to his manager. Now I was comparing the price of the Lyriq Sport level 2 to this EV9 AWD Land edition and the MSRP price between the two was within a hundred dollars of each other. The EV9 had a number of features that the Lyriq did not have unless I paid substantially more and go to the top end Sport Level 3. At this point the Kia was winning on features giving it a better value due to the two being priced nearly the same. The sales rep came back to the table with a price that was $5,000 off MSRP. I felt based on internet searching that this was a fair price and felt it was good. I asked him then at this price with my IRA rebate of $7,500 what would a three-year lease with 15,000 miles a year cost me per month. The rep said give him a few minutes to have the manager put this in the system and he would come back with a detailed price for me. The salesperson returned about 10 minutes later with a Deal Sheet for me to review. Here is where the difference became clear between this Kia Dealership and the Cadillac Dealership. The Deal Sheet had all the numbers listed out clearly. Any person could walk through this in full understanding. The lease deal, started off with the Stock number for the EV9, had the MSRP listed, discount, then Selling price of the EV9. This was followed by a blank field for accessories or add on sales items as the sales rep explained. The rebate for $7,500 was clearly listed, blank space for Trade, cash cap reduction, license fee, doc fee ending in a final price of the EV that was then broken down by 36 months @ 15,000 miles a year for a Base monthly rental cost and then the sales tax on the whole deal which was broken down into monthly tax rate added to the monthly lease amount. Residual value at the end of the lease, a residual money factor that is a decimal number used to figure out the monthly lease rate. All in all, a very clear understandable deal and the monthly price for the EV9 was $837 per month compared to $1,200 plus for the Cadillac. I told the salesperson that I would need to talk to my wife when she got home tonight and would give him a call back. As I was getting ready to leave, I realized I had forgotten to ask an important question. Could the front driver and passenger windows be tinted to match the rest of the auto. Due to having had skin cancer, blocking out UV plus just having it darker is what I prefer. The sales rep said he believed so but would have to check with his manager and could call me if I gave him my number later. I left him my cell number and headed home. Sitting at home, I was thinking about the experience at the Cadillac dealership and wondering, can it really be that bad at any other dealership? So, I did a search and found the identical Cadillac Lyriq Sport 2 AWD Celestial Metallic at the Bellevue Cadillac dealership and much farther away at Larson Cadillac of Fife. Off to Bellevue I went. Arriving at the Bellevue Cadillac dealership, I was promptly greeted and professionally questioned on the auto I was interested in. The young man was always polite and more than happy to help me. This dealership is one of the newly built from the ground up dealerships that truly echo's Luxury and what I would expect from a luxury dealership. Due to the knowledge of the salesperson like the other dealership, it started off positive, went out to check and see if the auto their website stated they had on hand was actually there. It was, Identical to the one at Brotherton Cadillac NW in Shoreline Washington. At this point, I gave him the same info I had given the other person to see what the pricing would be. Ten minutes later he returned with a printed sheet of paper, that was better than handwritten. Had a set sale price that was a couple thousand off the MSRP, had a rebate of $1,000 showing a reduced price, document fee, licensing and a theft engraving that he said they do on all autos sold there so nothing I could do about not wanting it. The total at the end showed a lease money factor, term, mileage and residual with a base payment of $1,042 dollars. with no money down.  Now two things I noticed, one was that the IRA rebate was not showing anywhere on the paperwork and the second item was that at least their price was over $200 less than the other dealership. I inquired about the $7,500 rebate and he said he did not know and would go ask. Upon returning he said it was factored into the residual value of the Lyriq when I traded it back in. I pointed out that the rebate does not go into a value of the vehicle but is paid to the dealership and so comes off the price of the auto. Things continued to go downhill from here as I was told by him that I did not understand how leasing worked. His sales manager stopped by, and I pointed this out, same response, I do not understand how leasing works. I informed them that I would need to present this to my wife and discuss it with her. They attempted the pressure response of get her on the phone, we can explain it and you can drive home in your new EV. They were not happy with me and would not let me have the paperwork. When they stepped out to talk, I snapped a quick picture of the printed paperwork. Two Cadillac dealerships, two different lease prices on the identically spec / priced Lyriq Sport 2 and no honest showing of where the rebate would end up at.  Heading home this made me wonder about Cadillac and their EV focus which we have since learned in the news has changed to having ICE and EV through 2030 and beyond. At home, I explained my day of EV shopping to the wife, she was disappointed that Cadillac was not forthcoming with their pricing. She liked the looks of the Lyriq as much as the looks of the Kia EV9. At this point the phone rang, and it was the sales rep for Kia. He informed me that yes, the doors could be tinted and that his sales manager if we were willing to move forward with the deal would throw in the front window tinting. We setup an appointment for Saturday morning to go and test drive the EV9 with the wife to ensure she would be happy driving it. For full details on our EV9 Purchase read this story: Now at this point, I figured I would relax for the evening, but I got another phone call from a sales rep at Larson Cadillac who informed me that the Lyriq I was interested was already sold at their dealership, but he could make me another deal on a like existing Lyriq, different color. I informed him that my wife liked the 800V Lyriq in the Celestial Metallic. The man on the other end of the phone said he could see if they could do a trade to get what we were interested in, but he wanted me to understand that the Lyriq was not a true 800V EV. I was surprised by his comment and asked him why it was not a true 800V EV. I learned and have verified that the only EV GM makes that truly can handle 350 kW fast charging is the Hummers, the Lyriq has an 800V electrical system, but the battery packs are first generation and as such only rated at 400V meaning they have a top charging speed of 150 kW. GM is planning to roll out 800V battery packs starting with the Chevrolet and GMC full size pickups. All other EVs will continue to use the 400V battery packs for now. At this point, I thanked the man for his time and would think on it and get back to him. As a person wanting to be current, this takes me to the Kia EV9 only. I did not say anything to my wife about the tech and hoped she would be happy with how it drove. Luckily that was a success the next day. I have spent half my life on the sales side and in training new sales folks there is a pretty basic 5 step process in sales: 1) Greet the customer inquiring what brought them in today 2) Qualify the person on what they want 3) Trial close to see if they are ready 4) Clarify questions and overcome concerns 5) Close the Sale. To accomplish this basic 5 steps, you first have to fully train the individual in what they are selling. Here Cadillac clearly is not or possibly the dealerships are not wanting to ensure everyone know how to sell an EV. Recap of this whole shopping experience is that Kia is nailing it with a professional sales experience, knowledgeable people on their products and a sales / lease process that is clear hiding nothing from allowing you to commit to buying or leasing a new auto. Cadillac on the other hand has left me with the feeling of snake oil salespersons at both dealerships with vague pricing, vague rebates and me wondering just how much they really want to earn my repeat business as I would love to replace my current Escalade with an Escalade IQ, but at this point, Genesis the luxury brand for Hyundai / Kia will reveal their Full Size GV90 ICE/Hybrid/Electric SUV summer of 2024 and I might just be replacing it with a Genesis.     • Let me put it this way, The amount of money I saved with the interior having more room inside than my current Escalade and the silent comfort, It is a win to me with not having to deal with any of the ICE maintenance or gas trips. My leasing / buying story should help enlighten you on why leasing an EV is a good thing right now. I am also putting in a Level 2 charger at the house that will be another story on the research, cost, etc. So you can follow up on that story too.
    • I stumbled upon a small meetup this weekend. There's a new custom/restoration shop about two blocks from my home and I was walking to a Casey's to grab a cake donut for my wife (hahaha) and this is right next to the Casey's.  This grey Chevelle was perfect, absolutely perfect. The plate is the name of the shop, Xtreme (restoration, bodywork, modification). I'm sure this is their show piece, and what a piece of work/art it is! I believe the van is theirs as well.  Later that day we ran to Aldi and came across the International Scout. it was far from mint condition, but it was "pretty good" but even cooler to see it just out and about. 
    • That's an exciting purchase, EV is tempting to me, but I still think all these current Gen EV's are too expensive compared to ICE cars.  If they can cut weight and cost 15% then I think the flood gates open on EV sales.
